March is the Time to Go Glam with Serious Pink Glitter: Nailing It

Operations associate, Loren, has a thing for nails- and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a weekly slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related. Check back every Thursday for Nailing It, Birchbox’s dedicated polish series.

February seems to have flown right by and you know what that means—time for the color of the month! Last month we revamped our nails with a super-charged purple that kept us chugging through the cold weeks of February. This time around though, I’m all about adding a little (or rather, a lot of) sparkle.

It’s time to ring in the new year! While I don’t know what you have planned for NYE, I do know that this night usually means big things: an awesome outfit, sultry makeup, dancing shoes, and a great mani! Since I’m still not sure what polish I will be rocking tomorrow, I decided to round up some inspiration. From the classic combo of black and gold to matte ombre sparkles to colorful confetti glitter, these are a few of my favorite festive ideas.

What will you be wearing on your nails for NYE? Tell me in comments!

Shine On: Mood Board

Our creative team is pretty, well, creative and they come across beautiful imagery all the time. Why not share the inspiration? Keep an eye out each Friday for their Mood Board, a collection of images they’re loving.

‘Tis the season to sparkle. You’ve logged quality time with the family, devoured mountains of cookies, and unwrapped all your new goodies. Now it’s time to let the real celebration begin! There’s no better way to ring in the new year than with a little shimmer and glitter. No matter what your plans are this New Years Eve, we hope you take the opportunity to shine.

Summer Is The Time To Sparkle

I’ve always had an obsession with things that sparkle. No, not diamonds (although those are nice)—I’m talking about fashion pieces or beauty products that have glitter, sequin, or some kind of shimmer. While a lot of us associate anything glitzy with the holidays, these items are awesome to bust out in the summer when you can get the full-fledged gleaming effect in direct sunlight. Currently, I am on the hunt for more twinkling adornments. Here are a few of the things that are at the top of my list:

J.Crew Glitter Finish Leather Sandals ($98): Could these be any cuter? I especially love the juxtaposition of a sporty flat sandal with a a feminine silvery finish.

Jouer Moisturizing Lip Gloss ($20): This keeps lips hydrated and gleaming with tiny bits of gold glitter.

Tatcha Aburatorigami Blotting Papers ($12): Fancy and affordable, these blotting papers are great for hot summer days and the decorative gold leaf flecks are oh so pretty.

Vince Sequin Crepe Top ($295): This boxy tank takes even the most boring pair of shorts or pants and transforms them into something special.

Guest Blogger: We Heart This Talks Glitter

This week, we have Stef and Tyna of We Heart This blogging about how to do beauty the adult way. Here, Stef tells us how to make glitter look grown up.

For this addition of the Grown Up Girl’s Guide to Beauty, we’re talking about glitter. It can be a blessing or a curse when it comes to cosmetics, and even more so as you get older. While it can add glamour for a special occasion, glitter can sometimes leave you looking like a hot mess. There is nothing like glitters settling into wrinkles to draw attention to, even accentuate, them.  But Grown Up Girls, rejoice! There are ways that you can join in the glittery fun. As long as you follow a few simple do’s and don’ts…

1. Do: All hail the mighty glitter nail polish! There is no easier way to bring a bit of age-appropriate flash into your life than with a polish. You can go tone on tone for a more understated look — try red polish paired with red glitter top coat. Or add a contrasting or multi color polish on top of a base shade for a real party on your nails. Bonus: a glitter top coats hide flaws (smears, bubbles, chips—you name it) in your manis and pedis.

2. Don’t: Thinking about a blush with chunky glitter in it? If you’re anything but a ‘tween, think again. Just as filling wrinkles with glitter is a bad idea, the same goes for pores. Not cute! If you want some sparkle, pick a blush with fine micro-shimmer instead.

3. Do: Anyone can wear glitter eyeliner. It’s a subtle way to draw attention to your eyes (well, as subtle as glitter can be). Any shadow that has a bit too much bling can easily be used as a liner with the help of water and a fine tip brush. Try this trick I learned from a makeup artist. Line your eyes with a crème liner. Then apply the same shade of a glittery liner over the base, but ONLY directly above your iris. It adds depth and a bit of twinkling light behind your lashes.

4. Don’t: Go glitter gaga! Wherever you choose to wear glitter, let that be the only place to have it proudly shine. Unless you’re a drag queen, then I highly encourage the opposite.

5. Do: Now, I’m a lip gloss addict. So I think gloss of any type is pretty much a go; from neon to black…ok, not black. But glitter gloss? A big do! Even if you don’t cover your whole lips like a big luscious disco ball, just a dab in the center of your lower lip provides a playful pop of shine that looks good on everyone.
