Geek Girls with Nothing to Prove
While we have an obvious interest in beauty here at Birchbox, if you’re a regular reader of the blog, you probably know that there’s a strong streak of geek in us. Maybe you’ve seen our awesome patented algorithm to pick products, or caught us talking about superheroes, Mega Man, or Star Trek. We can’t help it—that fun, silly side of us just has to come out sometimes. So when a staffer showed us this music video by The Doubleclicks, a pair of sisters who sing and support all things nerdy, we knew we had to share it.
The Doubleclicks asked fans to submit their photos and videos telling their own geek stories with the #nothingtoprove, since lately the female community has experienced some frustrating jabs from others asking them to “prove that they’re a geek.” Over 150 lovely women, girls, and guys sent in content and The Doubleclicks compiled as many as they could into one inspirational music video. The stories are heartwarming and totally relatable for anyone who has a deep love of Dungeons & Dragons, World of Warcraft, and, well—anything that they really like a lot.
What makes a geek? It’s not their size, shape, ethnicity, nor is it their gender. It’s the act of being so devoted to something that you want the world to love it just as much. One of the best pieces of advice from the video for gals who are being provoked? “There are no fake geeks. Only real jerks.”
To the girl who wants to be an astronaut when she grows up, Karen Nyberg did it and so can you.
