The Craziest ‘Do We Saw at Fashion Week: Vera Wang’s Hair Turbans

Talk about a model’s worst nightmare to brush out! The extreme “hair turbans” created by Paul Hanlon for Frédéric Fekkai at Vera Wang were a feat of styling genius—one which most certainly left many of the girls deep conditioning and detangling later that day. “I quite like the idea that it doesn’t look like hair,” said Hanlon. “It looks like a material or a fabric that’s been out in the desert that’s been very weathered and beat up and dry,” said Hanlon.

Hairistocracy: Très Jolie!

We’re guilty of sticking with the same hair cut for years — if it’s not broke, why fix it? — but that can be a little boring. But not everyone has our issue. Paulina, one of our amazing operations associates, is always eyeing new cuts and styles. She’ll be sharing her tress inspiration and tips every other week here via her feature Hairistocracy.

This week on Hairistocracy we’re celebrating our oh-so-recent news (Have you heard?!) with some inspiration from our brand-new French counterparts.

It started this past weekend at the Birchbox Sample Stop. Little miss Whitney, my beloved Ops Associate, volunteered to help our team with the event and had the lucky opportunity to get her hair done by the Fekkai team. She walked out with a killer up-do that happened to be one of the most unique I have ever seen. Even though I immediately assumed this look came from one of those stylists with magic hands (you know, an up-do that’s absolutely impossible to replicate yourself), I asked Whitney how they created it anyway.

4 Swimwear Designers’ Beach-Ready Beauty Must-Haves

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Now that we’re in the final weeks of summer, it’s time to squeeze in your last-minute beach jaunts and exotic getaways. I checked in with some of today’s most in-demand swimwear designers to see what trusty beauty products they never hit the waves without.

1. SkinCeuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense SPF 50: “Apply bronzing powder on top of this protective sunscreen to offset the white tint and you’re good to go!”

2. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Bronzing Powder: “My shade is called Give Me Sun. It’s a mineral powder that leaves a sheer finish, which is the perfect look for direct sunlight.”

Do You Have a Sunday Night Beauty Ritual?

Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for Fitness, Glamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.

Am I the only one who gets all depressed on Sunday nights? After an amazing weekend full of naps on the sofa, sangria slushies, backyard barbecues, and everything in between, Sunday evening rolls around and it’s all over. But it doesn’t have to turn into a pity party.

Ever heard of the Sunday Night Beauty Ritual (SNBR)? Basically, you take the better part of Sunday evening to pamper yourself with a major at-home beauty treatment. I haven’t tried one yet, but all my beauty writer and editor buddies are on board with the practice. I have to say, their skin, hair, nails, (and sense of humor toward the work week) are seriously benefiting. Let’s get inspired together by these real life SNBRs:

“Sunday is my hair washing day. I wash and deep condition with a hair mask. Plus, I usually do any waxing and body scrubs that I don’t otherwise have time for during the week.”
—Nykia Spradley, Associate Beauty Editor at Ladies’ Home Journal

Guess Commercial Hair Envy: Hairistocracy

Photo: tengossip.com

For weeks, New York City taxicabs have showcased my latest obsession over and over again via the passengers’ TV monitor: Guess’ spring ad campaign starring Amber Heard.

The actress is up-and-coming and you may know her from The Rum Diaries with Johnny Depp. In the Guess spot, she’s sporting the most amazing platinum blonde strands, which are no doubt Monroe-inspired given that the whole world is having a renewed love affair with the icon these days. Guest Blogger: (After)Sun Shine

Certainly not all style blogs are worth reading, but we’re absolutely smitten with Sonia Evers’ Runway Hippie and we think it should be on your radar. Aside from her daily dose of inspiration, great finds, or personal pics, Evers also finds time to contribute to Refinery29.com, Modelina.com, and Glamour.com. Check back here all week as she muses on all things summer fun, from self-tanner to beachy waves.

By the end of the summer my hair feels more like straw than actual strands of hair. Thanks to the humidity, the sun, the chlorine, and other dehydrators, my hair becomes dry, brittle and full of split ends thus making me the perfect candidate for horrendously frizzy hair. After having to cut off five inches of my long locks one summer due to excessive split ends (and the fact that the bottom half of my hair was dyed green from chlorine), I learned my lesson in proper summer hair care.

I use Moroccan Oil Hydrating Styling Cream everyday — no joke, this stuff changed my life. I also use Frederic Fekkai’s Protein Reparative Treatment Mask once a week to lock in moisture and keep my hair strong and healthy. And if I’ve been extra naughty and spent a few too many hours basking in the sun, I coat the ends of hair in Aveda’s After-Sun Hair Masque, which keeps them from fraying and breaking. A bit extreme? Yes. But the difference that these few techniques made in my hair last summer was priceless. My hairdresser even told me so.

Guest Blogger: Achieving Sexy Surfer Girl Hair

No matter the season, I strive for wavy beach hair on a daily basis. There’s really nothing better than that tousled, just-out-of-the-water look. Since I live in New York City, dunking my head in the ocean is a little out of the question, but thankfully there’s a number of products that help me get my messy hair without putting on a bathing suit.

I currently have three methods for achieving beachy hair, all of which have a slightly different result.

1. When I want my hair to look as if I’ve literally just gotten off my surfboard in Hawaii, I use Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray. It gives my locks a ton of texture while simultaneously holding everything in place. I spray it all over my hair (wet or dry) and massage it into my scalp. I used this everyday for a while and it really dried out my hair, so I recommend either using it less often or making sure you frequently hydrate your hair with deep conditioning treatments.

2. I use Frederic Fekkai’s Marine Summer Hair + Beach Waves when I want more defined waves. I spray it all over my hair right after I get out of the shower then scrunch my hair up towards my scalp and let it air dry. The result is clean, defined waves that look natural and feel extra soft.

3. When I feel like giving my hair a break from products, I spray my hair with a spray bottle filled with homemade salt water and let it air dry. While it doesn’t hold a curl as much as the other products, it still gives my hair that textured, tousled look.
