Nerd alert: one of our favorite things to do is read the customer reviews in the Birchbox Shop. You all are an opinionated bunch—and we like it! We especially love the love letters you write to your favorite products. (Though we’re still waiting on the haikus and iambic pentameter.) From time to time, we’ll be highlighting extrasweet customer serenades. Up next: a life-changing, multipurpose balm.
Unlike those other guys,Dr. Lipp’s lip balm won’t leave you high and dry. Rather, this all-natural salve is clinically proven to repair rough, flaky lips and smooth dry skin patches. (You can even use it as a stand-in for cuticle oil!) Originally designed for nursing moms to heal sore nipples, it quickly become a cult favorite of savvy makeup artists for its ability to soothe and prime. Another convert to the cult of Dr. Lipp’s? Subscriber Erin Carroll. Just check out what Erin had to say about his pout saver:
“My lips are almost always dry and chapped. I’ve used up entire tubs of vaseline trying to moisturize them but I still wake up with lips that are less-than-kissable. Dr. Lipp’s has changed my lips completely and I could not be happier. A little goes a long way, so I feel like the product is worth the price. It has been added to my nightly routine and I have to apply lip balm during the day a lot less frequently. Love Dr. Lipp’s!”

Winter weather is still lingering here in New York, and we’re antsy for spring to arrive so there can be an end to all this dry air and parched skin. Our favorite trick to fake blooming season? Indulging in the scents of our favorite flowers with a mini pampering. That’s why we invited our community to a shindig last month with a little help from our friends at Jouer. We gave a few lucky Birchbloggers the opportunity to try the gardenia, jasmine, and honeysuckle-scented Body Butter and Signature Rollerball Fragrance. Here’s what three bloggers had to say about these spring-scented picks:
I’ve struggled with dry skin my whole life and am continuously looking for products to help with the issue. The REN Rose O12 Ultra-Moisture Serum has drastically made a difference in the way my skin feels. If you feel let down by all the moisturizers that promise to stop your face from flaking (like me), I highly recommend this product.
If you’ve never visited a Dermalogica boutique, you’re missing out. Even if you’re not a skincare geek like me, it’s the place to go for help with any conceivable skin issue. Every location offers complimentary Face Mapping, a service where a certified Dermalogica therapist uses their patented technology to diagnosis your skin issues (dehydration, aging, sun damage) and then suggests products. Within ten minutes, you’ll be infinitely more educated about your skin and its needs.
Earlier this week, I popped down to the Dermalogica Soho shop because my skin was painfully dry—the result of too much travel, not enough sleep, and freezing winter weather. I’d been piling on the products to no avail, but I figured that the Dermalogica skin whizzes would have some tricks up their sleeve. And they did. Click through for their dry skin fixes.
In the fashion world, there’s outfit envy. In the beauty world, there’s makeup envy — and we are seriously envious when it comes to Annamarie Tendler. A genius makeup artist, Tendler covers a wide range of topics on her am. blog, but her The Daily Face posts, which chronicle her day-to-day makeup looks, are our favorite. (FYI: She did an amazing series in October called The Spooky Scary Daily Face, which was epic.) Each day she inspires with a gorgeous new look, and for one whole week, she’s sharing her makeup expertise with lucky, lucky us.
My skin gets really dry and itchy in the winter, but I’m not a fan of conventional moisturizers. For the most part, I think they’re filled with unhealthy ingredients, a lot of which end up drying out the skin more. Furthermore, no matter how many moisturizers claim not to leave a greasy residue, let’s be serious, so many of them do.
Yes, it’s still cold outside. I realize I’m beginning to sound like a broken
record cd mp3 Spotify stream, but this has been a brutal winter and my skin is losing patience. To tame the flakes, I’ve been experimenting with all sorts of supercharged products, like new favorite, Sponge Avocado Oil. I’ve also been using much more intense moisturizers. I used to shy away from these type of creams because I was worried they’d make me break out, but I’ve found that the more I hydrate, the better my skin behaves. In the spirit of more is better, I’ve been using The Organic Pharmacy’s Double Rose Ultra, a gorgeous smelling cream that has both rose oil and rose hip (hence the double) to hydrate, soothe, and heal. I’m a big fan of Organic Pharmacy because all their products are extremely clean — no artificial fragrances, colors, preservatives — but still feel and smell luxurious. This particular cream is especially good when temps dip because it doesn’t just pile on moisture — it acts like a balm to heal scratchy cheeks and sensitive skin. Too bad it can’t do anything about my perpetually watery eyes and runny nose.

8,000 feet of elevation is no joke. Obvi, but true. I was in Colorado this weekend for a wedding and in addition to wheezing up every set of stairs, I also got a serious case of high-altitude skin. Desiccated, flaky, wind-burned, and sensitive — not so pretty. Luckily, I had the chance to visit the lovely Allegria Spa at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek, where I landed in the exceedingly capable hands of esthetician Victoria Mastrogiovanni. Not only did the 11-year spa veteran revive my skin with a mix of SkinCeuticals and Epicuren hydrating products, she also gave me her high-altitude skincare secrets.
Brush, don’t scrub: Instead of sloughing away dry skin, Mastrogiovanni uses a Clarisonic face brush to cleanse every other evening. She says it’s much better at removing makeup and keeps skin fresh.
Layer on the moisture: Don’t just slather on the thickest cream you can find. Mastrogiovanni says it’s more effective to apply layers of hydration, even though “it’s annoying because it’s more steps.” Our go-to choice? Caldrea’s nourishing body lotion. The lightweight formula comes in three signature scents, while plant-based botanical increase elasticity and hydration.
Invest in a superhero gel: Hyaluronic gels boost your skincare products and helps the moisture bind with cells instead of sitting right on top of the skin.
Mastrogiovanni’s routine: Cleanse skin with a Clarisonic brush every other night. Use a hydrating toner like SkinCeuticals Revitalizing Toner, followed by a nutritive serum like SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF and Hydrating B5 Gel. Finish with moisturizer with SPF.
