My Wish List: Guest Blogger

The moment you start reading Alex Yeske’s dreams + jeans blog, you know one thing for sure: the girl has excellent taste. Musing on everything from fashion to beauty to design, the recent Syracuse grad has a knack for spotting pretty things — a skill that no doubt serves her well in her day job as a graphic designer for Madewell. This week, we’re lucky enough to have her guest blogging for us about everything from her beauty must-haves to how to get the perfect blow dry.

As I mentioned in Monday’s post, I absolutely adore testing out new products. I always have a running list of things I want to try and these are at the top of it:

1. Carol’s Daughter Monoi Hair Mask: I actually read about this product on the Birchbox blog a month or so ago and have been dying to try it ever since! I’m completely obsessed with testing out new hair products.

2. Nars Orgasm Illuminator: I love NARS’ Orgasm blush and think the shimmery version would be a great addition to my cosmetic bag.

3. Rodin Face Oil: This face oil comes up over and over again in magazines and on blogs. If that many people like it then it must be a great product!

4. Clarisonic Mia: I’m all about finding ways to make my skin noticeably better, and the technology behind this tool is genius.

5. Twistband Hair Ties: I’m never without a hair tie and these look so cute on your wrist, too!

Another must-try: Dr. Dennis Gross’ Extra Strength Alpha Beta Peel.

Who doesn’t love getting product recommendations from friends? I asked a few fellow bloggers that I know well to recommend some of their favorite products.

Kathryn of Sweet Tea and Champagne: I love St. Tropez Bronzing Mousse because it’s so easy to apply and you get that instant fresh-off-the-island glow.

Mackenzie of Design Darling: I always thought that as a redhead, I couldn’t rock a red lip, but I gave it a go this summer and I’m suddenly smitten. Pair NARS’ matte lipstick in Jungle Red with dewy skin and a dash of black mascara — it’s attention-getting for all the right reasons!

Molly of A Piece of Toast: My only makeup essential that has not changed since I was a sophomore in high school is my Shu Uemura eyelash curler. I truly cannot live without it. I first put on my mascara (a rotation of cheapies from Target) and then use this curler, and I seriously feel like a movie star!

Another big blogger fave? philosophy’s Hope in a Jar.

I’m a nail polish addict — ask anyone who knows me. I own more than 70 polishes (and know all of their names!). I’m a huge fan of trying out new polish trends and there are several right now that I have my eye on.

I’m obsessed with this bright graphic design (above). It looks like it requires a lot of time and patience, but it’s so fun and unusual.

This is an awesome update on the French manicure and a great option when you can’t decide on a color.

My hair is naturally wavy and tends to get frizzy when there’s any sign of humidity. To keep my strands manageable and sleek, I have to blow it dry. Here’s my step-by-step to achieving the perfect blowout.

Tools you’ll need: A blow dryer with a nozzle, a round brush, leave-in conditioner, frizz tamer, and clips.

1. While hair is still very wet, spray a leave-in conditioner or detangler on it. (If you spray once your hair is already dry, you’ll end up with sticky strands.)

2. If you have bangs, dry them first to prevent any annoying cowlicks or waves from getting out of control. Be sure to have a nozzle on your dryer!

3. Without using a brush, get some of the moisture out of your hair by throwing your head over and using your dryer. Be careful and don’t let your hair get too dry.

4. Now apply a frizz tamer. I love using Moroccan Oil. Only apply from the middle of your hair to your ends.

5. Start with the back of your hair and pull sections forward as you dry. I started using a boar bristle brush and it’s made a huge difference. Work your way forward piece by piece. Keep each section small and make sure to layer the hair evenly on the brush for the best results.

Enjoy your straight, frizz-free hair! And remember, practice makes perfect so don’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it right away.

I love trying out new products (who doesn’t?) and love it even more when I find something amazing to add to my daily routine. These are my essential every day products, and I can’t imagine life without them.

Laura Mercier Eyeliner in Stormy Grey: I love the color of this eyeliner — it’s perfect for every day and isn’t too harsh a contrast against my fair skinr.

Bobbi Brown Extreme Party Mascara: I love mascara and discovered this one earlier in the summer. It makes my lashes look long and full and works just as well for day as it does for a night out.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Rose: I’m starting to wear more lip stuff now and this lip tint has been the perfect transition product for me. It’s super moisturizing, smells fabulous, and gives a nice sheer application of color.

Clinique Superdefense Moisturizer: I’ve been using this lotion for over five years! It’s a great moisturizer and I love that it has SPF 25 in it.

Bvlgari Omnia Crystalline : My signature scent. Enough said.

Living Proof Shampoo and Conditioner: I actually just started using this a week ago and have already added it to my must-haves. It leaves my hair soft, silky, and frizz-free.

Another major essential? These towelettes.
