Top 10 Most Inspired Makeup Looks at NYFW

Usually when we’re backstage at fashion week, we gravitate towards makeup that’s exaggerated or particularly bold, and typically that means it isn’t very real-world friendly. For spring 2014, however, most of what we loved could easily be translated into a more standard day-to-day or evening out look. After much consideration, here are our top picks that we can’t wait to test out ourselves.

  1. Marchesa: Who says you have to wear light lip colors in the spring and summer? Global Artistic Director for Revlon, Gucci Westman, bent the seasonal rules (bravo!) by applying a deep purple to lips. (Photo: Courtesy of Revlon)
  2. Rag & Bone: Another great lip color and another look by Gucci Westman, the citrus pouts at Rag & Bone had every beauty expert predicting this would be the “it” hue for next year. (Photo: Courtesy of Revlon)
  3. Jason Wu: A picture may be worth a thousand words, but this image doesn’t do the eye makeup at Jason Wu justice. Diane Kendal for Lancôme achieved shimmering rose gold lids that were both romantic and dramatic. (Photo: Courtesy of Kerastase)
  4. DKNY: The matte, almost stained orange pouts really stood out at DKNY. To get this particular look, artist Charlotte Willer for Maybelline first applied a nude lipstick to act as a base and make the orange really pop. (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)
  5. Cynthia Rowley: Given that Cynthia herself likes to surf, it was no surprise that the designer’s favorite pastime found its ways into the beauty inspiration. Sarah Lucero for stila made the girls look like they had gotten some color by applying a rosy hue to cheeks and the bridge of the nose, as if they had just come in from the beach. She finished everything off with the most amazing shiny pink gloss. 6. Lela Rose: If you had told us a few weeks ago that chartreuse shadow could look cool, we would have said no way. Romy Soleimani proved us dead wrong at Lela Rose. (Photo: Courtesy of stila)
  7. Carmen Marc Valvo: Reaffirming that dewy is dead, makeup artist Uzo for Nars chose to do matte skin, which resulted in retro sixties-inspired eyes that really stood out.  (NARS)
  8. Helmut Lang: While we loved the fall-esque deep cherry lip, the flushed cheeks that Hannah Murray for Nars created at Helmut Lang were a unique highlight. Instead of using blush, Murray used a crimson lipstick and lip pencil and then blended with her fingers. (Courtesy of: Nars)
  9. Kate Spade: Barbie-meets-Sophia Loren was the vibe at Kate Spade. To achieve that effect, Neil Scibelli for Jouer created a double cat eye using contrasting white and black liner.
  10. TIBI: The bold streaks of striking white shadow by Alice Lane for Maybellne brought all the focus to the eyes at Tibi.  (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)

The first secret is that the gorgeous flush on the cheeks came not from a blush but a lipliner—Maybelline ColorSensational Lip Pencil in Red #50 to be exact. It’s unexpected, but she says it melts into the cheeks so well that you end up with the most natural cheek stain ever.

The second secret is that the lip color came courtesy of two lipsticks blended together, applied, and then blotted. The dynamic duo: Color Sensational Vivids Lipstick in Electric Orange and Neon Red. So that’s what you see here: Lipliner as blush and custom-blended lipstick, both of which are both copy-able and affordable. Kind of awesome, don’t you think?

Bare Lashes: The Fashion Week Trend We’re Trying Right Now

image

We loved New York Fashion Week’s attention-grabbing beauty trends like burgundy lips and messy halo braids. But in the midst of all the big, bold looks for this fall, there was one beauty product that was conspicuously absent on many of the runways: mascara. DKNY, Lacoste, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and several other shows featured models with clean lashes that drew attention away from the eyes and instead focused it on features like flawless skin or pouty lips. We admittedly feel a bit naked without a quick swipe of mascara before heading out the door, but this new modern look has us considering leaving the makeup bag staple behind and trying something different.

Image of million-dollar DKNY perfume from Luxuryes

We hope you’re planning to take advantage of this wonderful summer weekend by soaking up some sun. But whether you’re sitting poolside on a chaise lounge with your iPad or curled up on the couch with your laptop over the next few days, your time will definitely be well spent by surfing through all of the newcomers to the Birchbox Shop. Aside from getting your product fix, you’ll want to be in-the-know about the crazy tooth trend happening right now in Japan and DKNY’s million dollar bottle of perfume. So after you load up your shopping cart and while you mull over your options, read on below:

  • It’s National Smile Week, so it’s totally appropriate that bellasugar gave us insight into the temporary tooth decal trend that going on in Japan. Things being stuck to your teeth is usually a bad thing, but if that’s what floats your boat, so be it.
  • Not all of us can walk down the street wearing huge head ornaments and avoid getting dirty looks, but runway fashion can get away with pretty much anything. WWD picked up on this current fad and put together a photo collage of the most extreme headpieces.
  •  How much would you spend on a bottle of perfume? Fifty dollars? One hundred? How about a million? Well, DKNY partnered with a celebrity jeweler to create a fragrance that features 2,909 precious stones. It’s being going to be auctioned off for charity, check out the stunning pics on Luxuryes
  • OK guys, this one’s huge: Polo Ralph Lauren will be dropping ‘Polo’ from the name completely. Refinery29 told us all the deets. Maybe this is a sign we should finally give up our dreams of ever playing the sport (or at least dating a hot polo player). Croquet, anyone?
