We’ve all been there: You’re testing foundation after foundation, trying to find the right color. But no matter what shade you pick up, it looks a little bit off—too ashy, too peachy, too sallow—and nothing feels juuust right.
If this sounds like you, we’re willing to bet that you’ve overlooked a crucial step in your quest for the perfect shade: finding your undertone. Once you’ve determined whether your skin has a pinkish or yellowish cast, you’ll be able to find the perfect shade for all your makeup. And we’ve got a ridiculously easy trick to figure it out.
One of the best parts about working at Birchbox is learning new tricks and discovering products. My latest Birchbox discovery was the brow pencil and the impact it can have on your appearance.
Before working here, I always thought that the only people who filled in their brows were those with light blonde hair or those with thin brows who need more definition. You can imagine then that I was skeptical when I was asked to test drive It Cosmetics’ Universal Brow Pencil. My first thought was that there’s no way a brow pencil can actually be universal. How could someone with blonde hair use the same pencil color that I do and still have it look natural?
I had to test this out and I decided to gather a few other girls from the team with different hair colors and brow shapes to help me. It amazed me to see that this one pencil did really work on all five of us. Take a look through the before and after photos below and you’ll notice just how much of a difference filling in your brows can make!

You know that moment when everyone around you is talking about a show, and you have no idea what they’re talking about, but you nod your head and pretend like you do? I hate to say it, but that was me with HBO’s Girls. It wasn’t until I scored an invite to the season 2 premiere party on Wednesday night that I realized just what I was missing out on. (Even the most jaded New Yorkers on my team were acting a little jealous.) Take a peek below at some pictures from inside the party!

To all the ladies out there who wear glasses, I think you probably know how I feel. More than a few times I’ve considered giving up my hipster frames, cutting back on the expense of contacts and finally getting LASIK done. But the idea of having a laser on my eye made me nervous.
Lucky for me, my cousin Srini in South Florida has treated several family members who’ve all had great experiences. This year he finally gave me the okay to get the procedure now that I’m old enough, so I decided, why not? Everyone told me it’s a life changing experience that I wouldn’t regret. (Plus, who better to treat me than my own cousin?) To help those of you considering LASIK, I thought I would record the day-to-day so you have an idea of what to expect. It’s really not nearly as bad as you would think:

If there’s one celebrity I look forward to seeing strut the red carpet, it’s rising star Rita Ora. Her attitude is refreshingly irreverent, and so is her style. As a huge fan of crimson lipstick, I loved that Rita rocked bold red lips on Sunday night at the MTV European Music Awards. I often use red lipstick to brighten up my shadowy fall wardrobe, but Rita’s head-to-toe crimson look inspired me to double down on red.

The first time someone told me I looked like Mindy Kaling (a.k.a. Kelly from The Office), I didn’t know who they were talking about. But a quick Google search kicked off my obsession with the comedienne. It started with me reading her book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, continued with me following her on every social media outlet, and culminated in my addiction to her new show The Mindy Project. It’s also turned into a Birchbox office favorite—who doesn’t like watching a hot mess doctor try to find love?
I’ve always struggled to find a foundation that matches my skin tone. I’m Indian and I have yellow undertones, and I’ve tested virtually every brand on the market. While many brands come close, I always feel like shades show up a little grey on my skin or a little too dark. Plus, when you’re not really a foundation girl, it’s hard to find a product you feel comfortable using day-to-day, especially when it doesn’t match well.
But recently, I stumbled upon what just might be my foundation Prince Charming. Vasanti’s
two-in-one foundation/concealer, Liquid Cover up
, landed on my desk last week and I’ve been using it ever since. What I love about this product is that it doesn’t feel heavy because it’s formulated with silicone in water emulsion—translation: I don’t even feel like I’m wearing a foundation! The applicator is unique (I feel like you either love or hate it)—It’s a small wand that allows you to place the foundation on whatever part of your face you need it. It allows me to decide exactly how much coverage I want and is perfect for small blemishes. I usually put the Liquid Cover up on before applying my powder. Not only do I feel as though my skin tone is more even, I also notice a difference in pictures! It gives my skin a glow that I didn’t have when I just used my powder, and who can complain about a little glow?
Just to make sure Vasanti worked for other skin tones, I gave it to two of my colleagues. Click through to see how it looks on pale and dark skin!
Water cooler talk at Birchbox is a little out of the ordinary: we’re just as likely to have a ten minute cross-cubicle conversation about kohl liner as we are about the finer points of startup strategy. Case in point? A marketing meeting I was recently in suddenly morphed into a discussion about eyebrow grooming techniques. Here’s what I learned about a few of my fellow team members and how they keep their brows looking bold, groomed, and fabulous:
Style: Medium, manicured brows
Maintenance technique of choice: Waxing
