Finding Your Something Blue: Lover.ly

We’ve been planning our dream weddings since we were five years old. So it’s no surprise that we can’t get enough of Lover.ly, a wedding inspiration and e-commerce site that lets you search through pics of swoon-worthy gowns, bouquets, and everything else you need for the big day. Once a week, the ladies behind Lover.ly will be sharing their expert advice for getting through the craziness of the season—whether you’re standing at the altar or enjoying a view of it from the audience.

We love the “something old, something new” tradition because it’s a great way to show a little personality on your wedding day. If you’re feeling daring, you can rock a blue wedding dress—or if you prefer being more subdued, you could just opt for blue accessories like most brides. From statement necklaces to pretty fascinators, here are the trendiest ways to do your something blue.

The 5 Polish Shades You Need This Summer: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

There’s no time like summer for nail polish. Now that it’s June, it’s time to root through your polish collection (or pick up a few new favorites) to embrace the colors of the season. These are my top five picks to take you from June until Labor Day.

Pool Blue (thumb): Dark blues just don’t feel summer-y, and pale shades can be hard to pull off on most skin tones. This mid-tone blue is bright, cheerful, and totally wearable all summer long. Try OPI Can’t Find My Czechbook or Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics in Pool Boy.

The bright, eye-grabbing colors and intricate nail art that dominated the fashion runways last year have stepped aside. What’s replaced them? Minimalist-chic. In other words, pale, barely-there nails. From Marc Jacobs to Rag & Bone, the fashion scene is all about nudes and neutrals. Here’s how to get the look this spring:

Most of us won’t be sporting a Dior gown any time soon, but that doesn’t mean we can’t draw beauty inspiration from Oscar night glamour. Award show gowns are one of the best trend-predictors, especially when it comes to color. This year, pale neutrals, saturated blues, and shiny metallics ruled the red carpet. What do these three shades have in common? They translate beautifully to nail polish.

Dress Inspiration: Naomi Watts in metallic Armani Privé.

Try This: Shiny foil-like finishes are huge right now, and lucky for us, metallic polish is easy to pull off. Silvers, golds, and other metallic shades look great on just about everyone. For a gorgeous gold, pick up tenoverten in Worth, or try Deborah Lippmann’s Moon Rendezvous for an unexpected blue metallic.

Is 5-Free the New Standard For Nail Polish?

What’s missing in the latest nail polish formulas? Nothing that you’re going to miss. (Photo: about.com)

When nail polish was first created in France in the 1920’s, the formula was an adapted version of the glossy enamel used on cars. Eep! Thankfully, the formulas have come a long way since then. Over the past few years, we’ve seen many “3-free” formulas that omit harmful dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde. The next step: 5-free polishes, which are made without formaldehyde resin and camphor. Click through for more on these two toxic ingredients and for a list of our favorite 5-free brands!
