With so many curly- and wavy-haired staffers here at Birchbox—we know as well as anyone that it can be tough to find the right products, regimens and tools to help you manage your mane. (Plus, with summer heat and humidity coming soon we’re gearing up to fight the frizz). But thankfully, this week we’re getting even more help to tackle all of our hair snafus!
Join us tomorrow, Thursday May 30, at 3pm ET for a Twitter Chat with Miko Branch, one of the founders of curly hair brand Miss Jessie’s. She’ll be answering any and all of your questions about curly and wavy hair—from the perfect product for you to the tips and tricks she uses on her own hair.

If you follow our blog regularly, you’ve probably sensed that the Birchbox office is basically a beauty-product candyland. As exciting as that is, it can also make it hard to find the formulas that really work for me. We recently added a number of products from Shu Uemura’s Art of Hair to our shop, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the line had products that worked with many different hair types. From brittle and over-processed strands to extra limp locks, there’s a Shu Uemura formula that can help your specific hair dilemma. Here, a breakdown of my favorite products and how to use them:
As a curly-haired girl (okay, maybe more of a wavy-haired girl), I’m always trying products in an attempt to perfect my curls. The search is neverending and with so many formulas for everything from loose waves to tight spirals, it’s understandably difficult to get the right fit. (Don’t even get me started on extra problems like dryness or frizz.) Is it any wonder why I haven’t found my holy-grail product?
Having recently joined Birchbox, I decided to ask my beauty-loving team members for their top suggestions to help my constantly frizzy locks. Here were the standout products they recommended which have now become my new 3-step regimen:
As much as we love fast fashion and popular style from the Zaras and Bloomingdales of the world, sometimes we just want a beautiful, totally unique piece from an adorable boutique. Enter Shoptiques, an e-commerce site that allows you to shop local stores in the U.S. and Paris. This week, Tracey Wallace—Shoptique’s Director of Content—is giving us the lowdown on the best shops and how to pick standout pieces that play up your individual style.
Naturally curly hair isn’t something to hide, much less straighten. Curly hair is an essential part of who you are and what makes you, you. Instead of letting the grass look greener on the straighter side of hair care, learn a few easy tricks to make your hair healthier, shinier, and frizz-free from here on out.
New Year’s Eve is right around the corner, which means it’s time to stockpile noisemakers, experiment with crazy glitter—and of course accessorize your party frock with dazzling hair. Whether you’re spending the night at home glued to a Ryan Seacrest special or dashing off to a high-octane bash, you can ring in 2013 with these Instagram-worthy hair styles. After all, beyond the bubbly, NYE is basically one giant Instagram session.
Lately I’ve been a little obsessed with wavy hair. My hair naturally dries stick straight and has a bad habit of flattening out evenafter I’ve spent hours blow-drying, curling, and hairspraying it. Call it a case of the grass is always greener, but I’m loathe to step out of my apartment without at least a little wave in my strands.
So when Birchbox staffer (and former proprietor of an underground salon in her dorm room) Bridgette offered to show us how to curl hair using Sedu’s genius clipless curling iron, I jumped at the chance to get her on set. Watch the video after the jump to learn her technique for natural-looking, never over-done waves.
We’re guilty of sticking with the same hair cut for years — if it’s not broke, why fix it? — but that can be a little boring. But not everyone has our issue. Paulina, one of our amazing operations associates, is always eyeing new cuts and styles. She’ll be sharing her tress inspiration and tips every other week.

We’re big fans of Miss Jessie’s products for curly hair here in the Birchbox Office. But if you sift through their catalog, you may quickly notice that there are so many options. My associate Sarah and I were overwhelmed by the amount of products—to say the least—so we took it upon ourselves to do a week of trials with the brand’s best sellers. Enter the Curly Meringue, Quick Curls, and Stretch Silkening creme.
Blair Badge is one multi-talented lady: she’s a social media manager, a beauty editor for fashion site Chictopia, a model, a newlywed and an all-around awesome gal with a penchant for witty banter. Her dreamy blog, love, blair, is a heady mix of all her talents in one and we can’t get enough of her style and beauty advice. This week, she’s sharing her DIY beauty tips, like how to create a pretty custom lip color and how to get perfect beachy waves.
For you gals who prefer a simplified morning routine, this undone summer hairstyle is especially for you!
Step #1: Give your second-day “bed head” hair a boost with Redken’s Powder Refresh Dry Shampoo. Spray directly at roots throughout the crown section and rub in for extra lift.
Step #2: Smooth out the front sections by creating a gentle wave with a flatiron. I get this effect by rock the flatiron back and forth along the hair shaft.
Step #3: Lightly flatiron the bottom two inches of hair to rid your mane of any scraggily pieces.
Step #4: Spray TIGI Session Series Salt Spray generously from ears to ends and tousle with fingertips. Twist a couple bottom pieces with your index finger for the finished boho-effect!
For surfer girl waves, we love Oribe’s Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray.
If you’re like us, you really enjoy trying new hairstyles. Whenever we need inspiration, we visit Stephanie Brinkerhoff’s creative and brilliant Utah-based blog, Hair and Makeup By Steph. Brinkerhoff is a hair genius and this week, she’s sharing all her best styling tips, from how to look like you were born with curls to creating perfect waves with your flat iron.
1. Start by creating a deep side part.
2. Starting from your part, curl your hair forward using a 1” to 1 1/2” curling iron.
We’re loving the gorgeous curls that Halle Berry was rocking earlier this week at dinner with her fiance, Oliver Martinez. It’s such a fun departure from the signature close-cropped look that she’s been wearing for the last couple of years. While Berry’s new shoulder-grazing look was actually achieved with extensions, we’re big fans of natural curl, too. Our gorgeous operations manager, Bianca, has been sporting her natural, untreated hair for the last couple weeks, and it’s had everyone in the office buzzing:
