Color Theory: Yellow and Black Aren’t Just For Bees

Bright yellow and black usually conjure up images of striped bumble bees but these images prove the colors can look just as stunning in your home or on your face. Keep most of your makeup neutral and stun them with a bright splash of yellow on the eyes. Temper that with a thin black line and full black lashes to frame the eyes.

Color Theory: Navy Walls and a Pop of Red Lipstick

Color Theory is a weekly post about home decor and beauty. Because we can’t always make over our homes at the drop of a hat, but we can make over our faces. Check back weekly for a new room and a new set of products we love.

I’m crushing pretty hard on this room with navy walls, built-in bookcase, window seat, and zebra print rug. It looks eccentric and cozy, but not too cluttered. To match my makeup to it, I pulled out my favorite navy liner by stila (smudgy but easy to apply), a creamy cashmere eye shadow by Jouer, and a great red lipstick to match the flowers on the table. Perfect for a chilly first official week of winter.

Color Theory: It’s Electric (Pink & Blue)!

When I came across this bright room on Pinterest (It’s originally from this post on Design Sponge) the bright blue wall called to me. That’s a great color! And although the hot pink and blue would be extremely hard to pull off together on the face (eesh, 80s flashback!), they’re complementary when you keep them on nails and lips. Since blue nails are so big right now, it wasn’t hard to find an equally electrifying shade.

Color Theory: Lavender & Tangerine

When it comes to home inspiration, Design Sponge is one of the best destinations on the web. I spied this stunning patterned couch paired with a lavender wall in their Best of Purple post this morning and immediately ran to the beauty closet. A light wash of this lavender shadow and a bright pop of coral lip gloss are just the ticket for brightening up an otherwise dreary day in the city.

Color Theory: Teal & Yellow

Today I’m inspired by this bright, sunny room and bookshelf. I have a strange obsession with bookcases so this image really caught my eye. It’s worth clicking through to this blog post about updating bookshelves with color too! To get a similar beauty look, I’d mix Stila shadows for a sheer wash of color and put several coats of sheer yellow polish on my nails. Both are bright without being over-the-top.

Color Theory: Mustard Yellow, Taupe & Gray

Photo: HGTV Remodels

Yellow is usually reserved for the summer but when it’s slightly muted and paired with taupe and gray, we’ll call it fall appropriate. Yes, this week’s Color Theory inspiration may be a bathroom but that sunburst is gorgeous and I’d like to take a bath in there.

Color Theory: Dark Taupe and Deep Purple

Anthropologie is one of my favorite places to look for inspiration, whether it’s browsing the racks in person or online. Currently, I’m loving this room from their online shop. It’s full of drama, and the dark taupe walls and deep purple accents feel all grown up. Accordingly, I’m layering a nude taupe polish with a light grey on my nails, lining my upper lashes with purple smudgy liner, and covering lips with a berry gloss.

Color Theory: Orange and Pink

Our obsession with orange and pink continues! Today I’m inspired by this home decor image that I came across on Pinterest. Instead of updating my apartment, I’ll be pairing a bright orange shadow with a pop of pink on my lips. It’s a less expensive and time consuming way to rock this color combo and I like wearing exuberant shades to lighten up dreary fall days.
