Operations Coordinator, Loren, has a thing for nails—and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related.
We’ve had our eye on the white polish trend since we first spotted the look at spring Fashion Week—and now that it’s finally warm enough to really embrace the bright hue, the color has completely blown up here in the Birchbox office.
While it might not necessarily be your go-to color, we love that white is such a versatile and classy summer shade. (It can really give an outfit extra pop!) I’ve rounded up three of my favorite white polishes to try if you’re feeling adventurous:
If you saw the recent news that we’ve moved into a new office—complete with bright walls and loads of couches—you could probably tell we’re big fans of colorful environments. So it felt only natural that we interview one of our favorite designers and a huge proponent of color, Jonathan Adler, for an article this month about increasing your energy with the five senses. His advice for staying energized? “Surround yourself with the stuff you love. And when in doubt, add wallpaper. Color, pattern, fun: what’s not to love?”
“My favorite colors are the turquoise blue of the sea and the sky, the fluffy white of the occasional cloud, and the blazing orange of the sun. If I could live in a world of turquoise and orange only, I’d be very happy.”

A classic Russian nesting doll (so cute, right?) and a color-enhancing shampoo from Brooklyn-based amika might seem like two polar opposites. But both have roots in Siberia, Russia’s mysterious and frosty tundra. Though it’s best known for its freezing temperatures, this expansive region is home to some of the most diverse plants and herbs on the planet. Thanks to the abundance of greenery, Siberia is (funny enough) the source of the hair industry’s hottest ingredients: sea buckthorn berry oil or obliphica oil which packs a rare mixture of omega 7 acids and the vitamin C levels of 15 oranges. The combination leaves locks shiny, glowing and gorgeous.
Luckily, there’s no need to brave the permafrost in search of the magical elixir since amika’s hair experts have made it the key ingredient in their lush Color pHerfection Shampoo.
We’re not sure if it’s all the weddings we went to this summer, but lately it feels impossible to find shoes in a specific color and heel height. Luckily, CHROMATICgallerie is the answer to our shoe-searching prayers. Not only is the brand dedicated to bringing you customized shoes in every hue and style, but they’re also all about comfort. We sat down with the company’s founder, Chris Luhur, to get the scoop.
1. Where did the idea for Chromatic come from?
Everyone has different feet, not just in terms of length, but also width and shape. When shoes don’t fit right, they hurt and you wear them less. And have you ever put together an outfit and thought that a certain color shoe would just make the outfit but struggled to find that color?
CHROMATICgallerie was created to tackle those two problems of fit and color. We wanted to create a shoe that came in different fits and different colors to suit your feet and your mood.
2. What’s the price range for a pair of customized pumps?
All of our shoes are $88, regardless of heel height, size, width, color, or material. We like to keep things simple and encourage people to have fun, and be adventurous—especially with colors!
Over the weekend at eco-friendly designer Stella McCartney’s fall 2012 fashion show, models on the runway were sporting a very eye-catching look: cobalt blue lashes.

Teen queen starlet Vanessa Hudgens is sporting a new ‘do for her upcoming film, Spring Breakers. The one time High School Musical actress, who will be appearing alongside fellow Disney alum Selena Gomez, got extensions and dyed her normally brunette strands a harsh flaxen hue.
Last week, the Birchbox editors took a behind-the-scenes visit to the new Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics store on New York’s trendy Lower East Side. The 100% vegan, cruelty-free brand, known for its hyper-pigmented lip colors, just opened their first outpost in September, and has since been offering their makeup artist know-how and line of gorgeous hues to residents of the über-trendy neighborhood. You may have noticed this before, but we’re Hunger Games obsessed here in the Birchbox office and we’ve been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the movie’s release on March 23rd. (Lest you doubt our commitment, we’ve already bought our boatload of tickets for a team viewing on premiere night!)
In the meantime, we’re satisfying our Hunger Games addiction with the new Capitol Colors collection from China Glaze. We snagged a few of the shades from the line that’s set to debut this month, and we cannot speak highly enough (or obsessively enough) about these lacquers. I’m personally in love with Riveting, a micro-glitter orange that’s given my nails a fiery glow.
Earlier this week, operations manager Emily decided to spruce up her hair by going extra dark and bold. “I was starting to get bored with my overall look,” Emily said. “Usually when it’s feeling a little drab I go to drastic measures and chop it all off, but this time I decided that a change in the color would tide me over for a bit.”
She looks absolutely gorgeous! We love the lustrous dark brown and the loose curls she’s been rocking around the office for the last few days. “The only other time I’ve colored my hair was when I was 16 and dyed it black out of a box,” she said. “My hair was so damaged that as it started to wash out, the ends of my hair stayed jet black and everything else went back to brown. I looked like I had leopard spots!”
Well, Em, there’s no sign of any leopard spots this time around. You look fantastic.
What do you think of Emily’s bold new look?
Whenever we change our color, we make sure to use products formulated just for dyed locks. We love this shampoo and conditioner from Oribe.
Bobbi Brown's splashy new spring colors, a selection of bright neons and subtle nudes, has finally hit shelves. There's plenty of bright eye and cheek colors in the collection, but our favorite hues are the punchy lipsticks and lip glosses. From electric orange to sassy purple to glam pink, these are great pick-me-up shades for the depressingly gray winter months. We can't wait to get our hands them. Click through to see the collection!
