We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
Not many people know this, but I’m a huge art fan. I’d probably be more star-struck meeting Marina Abramović than Meryl Streep (although it would be a close call), and one of my life goals is to own an original Keith Haring painting. With that said, I always get a little giddy when a savvy beauty brand teams up with an influential artist to produce creative packaging or an inspiring campaign. Here are five of my favorites.
So. We have a little secret we’ve been keeping from you. You know how we love smart, stylish women? Well, we got one of the smartest, mostly stylish women we know to curate our July Birchbox. Cynthia Rowley, kids! She’s a rock star designer, master collaborator (remember those amaze Band-Aids?), and web entrepreneur (witness her startup, Exhibition A). We’re pretty psyched. And not ONLY has she put together a rockin’ box of samples for our Birchbox subscribers, but she’s also helped us create a Special Edition ‘Tip to Toes Treats’ box - filled with creams and potions to prettify skin, hands, and nails. The Special Edition Cynthia Rowley box will go on sale in July…stay tuned!
If you’re not already a Birchbox member, hurry up and join by June 30th so you can get a July Cynthia Rowley box.
Can’t hardly wait? Well, if you’re in the New York area come out to our event this Saturday at Cynthia Rowley’s Montauk shop. You can be the first to get your hands on the Special Edition box (and meet Cynthia and Birchboxers)! See invite above.
I heart Glee. I heart the choreographed fist pumps, and the way they get seemingly incongruous celebs to show their gleeky side (hello Gwenyth). And the Glee phenomenon shows no sign of abating, with its songs consistently topping iTunes and plenty of tours and concerts in the works. Now they’re even targeting the beauty market, with a line of Glee-themed nail polishes that will be exclusive to Sephora. The shades take inspiration from the show, from Slushied (a reference to a high school hazing practice) to Mash-Up. That’s all well and good but couldn’t they have taken a bit more inspiration from some of our favorite characters? You know Kurt is a master with a Nail Art pen - that kid could draw the Sistine Chapel on his digits without breaking a sweat - and I’m sure Tina has some sort of goth-inspired French manicure that would be all the rage in NYC high schools.
Are you a polish fanatic? If so, you’ll love the colors we have available in the Birchbox Shop.
