Contemporary design nuts will love of-the-moment bakeries Turris (various locations) and Crustö (Mercat de la libertat, 80-81), while the more traditional-minded should make a beeline for Forn Mistral (Avinguda de Mistral, 20) to find the city’s flakiest croissants, and Baluard (38-40 baixos, Barceloneta) for whole-grain, spelt, and dried-fruit varieties. No visit to Barcelona is complete without some serious tapas time, and you’ll find the best options in the old fishermen’s waterfront neighborhood of Barceloneta—in particular, Jai-Ca (Carrer Ginebra) and La Cova Fumada (Carrer Baluard, 56; order the bombas). For a slightly more upscale destination, try El Vaso de Oro (Calle de Balboa) and their filet of beef tapas accompanied by a caña (draft beer).

For the best burger in town, head to MEATliquor behind Oxford Street or sister restaurant MEATmarket in Covent Garden and order the Dead Hippie—pair it with a delish cocktail. Borough Market on the South Bank has all the food stalls you can imagine, from cheese and meats to cider and sweet treats. Insider’s tip: Don’t leave without a visit to Monmouth for coffee—the queue is worth the wait.

Shopping

First stop: Printemps (102 Rue de Provence). You’ll find all the up-to-the-minute brands—without the massive crowds of Galeries Lafayette. Another on-trend spot: Le Bon Marché (24 Rue de Sèvres), whose lower level boasts La Grande Epicerie, where you can find all sorts of fabulous foodstuffs to take home (plus all the fixings for a pique-nique). For higher-concept fashion, walk over to Merci (111 Boulevard Beaumarchais), then indulge in a piece of chocolate cake at the boutique’s used bookshop and cafe. Vintage buffs should check out Kiloshop (125 Boulevard Saint-Germain), where you buy by the (yep, you guessed it) kilo.
