You may have noticed this before, but we’re Hunger Games obsessed here in the Birchbox office and we’ve been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the movie’s release on March 23rd. (Lest you doubt our commitment, we’ve already bought our boatload of tickets for a team viewing on premiere night!)
In the meantime, we’re satisfying our Hunger Games addiction with the new Capitol Colors collection from China Glaze. We snagged a few of the shades from the line that’s set to debut this month, and we cannot speak highly enough (or obsessively enough) about these lacquers. I’m personally in love with Riveting, a micro-glitter orange that’s given my nails a fiery glow.
Operations associate, Loren, has a thing for nails- and we can’t blame her. We love reading about new finishes and fun techniques, so we thought we’d give her a weekly slot on our blog to wax poetic about all things manicure (and pedicure!) related. Check back every Thursday for Nailing It, Birchbox’s dedicated polish series.

Some of you may be familiar with holograms already—almost every driver’s license or ID has a holographic sticker on it. The reason that I bring up the fun, 3D-style images now is that I’m seeing a trend in spring polish collections, and I can’t help but dedicate this post to one of my favorite lacquer effects: Holographic nail polish.

Our Ops Team is basically the coolest group of girls around. Each and every day, they inspire the rest of the staff with their positive attitudes—and their superb sense of style. I consistently turn to various members of their team for tips, and at a meeting yesterday, Whitney’s nails caught my eye.

It was obvious at first glance that her superb nail art had to be shared with the rest of the beauty world. So post-meeting, I snapped these pics and asked her to share the step-by-step process.
Step 1: Apply a base coat of Butter London’s new Trout Pout and wait for it to dry completely.
Step 2: Get out some toothpicks and put dabs of your various colors on a Post-it.
Step 3: Take one toothpick and make the center of the flower using Orly’s Iron Butterfly. Take a different toothpick, dip it into China Glaze’s new Sunshine Pop, and create the petals by pulling them out from the center. Take a third toothpick and use China Glaze’s Gaga for Green to draw the stem.
Step 4: Use the toothpicks to add polka dots to the rest of your nails.

After watching all the gorgeous bright and blush-tone gowns flow down the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday, I got inspired for spring colors. Based on how awards season has started and the spring 2012 shows, I’ve picked the four shades I think will be blossoming on everyone’s nails come warmer weather. Take a look and let me know the polishes you’ll be springing for in comments!

Canary Yellow: Yellow is going to be B-I-G for spring. Designers like Derek Lam, Rodarte, BCBG (above), and Diane Furstenberg all incorporated this sunny shade in a significant way into their collections. To spread the love to your digits, try China Glaze’s Shunshine Pop from their new Electropop Collection.

More news from the Hunger Games nail polish front: Elizabeth Banks (in full Effie Trinket mode) is now appearing as China Glaze’s spokesmodel for the much-anticipated line of polishes.

On Tuesday we got a sneak peak at China Glaze’s The Hunger Games Collection that will be coming out in February, but I’m even more excited to announce another polish collection inspired by one of my favorite books of all time, Steig Larson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Duri has concocted a set of dazzling lacquers that truly emulate the fierce protagonist, Lisbeth Salander.

For the second time today, the Hunger Games has caused us to stop everything we’re doing. First, there was the debut of the first full-length trailer, which proved what we’ve all known: this movie is going to be bonkers good. And now, some late-breaking news: China Glaze will release a special Hunger Games nail polish collection “sometime in February.” Fashionista has the swatches and they’re all kinds gorgeous — we can’t wait to try the moody Coal Hearted, inspired by District 12, and of course the opalescent Catnip in honor of heroine Katniss.

Halloween is by far my favorite holiday and what better way to celebrate it than with a spooky manicure? Here are three ideas that are the perfect addition to any creative costume.

1) The Bloody Mani
I wanted the red on this look to really stand out, so I started off with two coats of white OPI Alpine Snow. You can also do a nude base, which would be more subtle but also more realistic. To get the bloody effect, I used the corner of a sponge and dabbed it in Deborah Lippmann’s bright red My Old Flame polish. Starting at the tips, I lightly pressed the red onto my nails and worked my way downward. Once I was done sponging, I just added a top coat and mwahaha — the scariest my fingers have ever looked.
