Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel at Time’s 100 most influential people gala earlier this week.
Like most worker bees, my 9 AM office routine follows a fairly familiar pattern. Trudge zombie-like towards coffee, browse my inbox for 10 minutes, then head to a gossip site to catch up on some celeb happenings. (Especially here, beauty news is important!)
This morning, I found myself swooning over a photo of America’s favorite newlyweds: the Timberlakes. While we don’t all have red-carpet galas to attend, these looks are still perfect for a night out on the town or a formal summer wedding. The former Ms. Biel looked radiant with bronze smoky eyes and a Bridgette Bardot-esque ‘do, and her beau looked particularly dashing in his updated 20/20 Experience look—we love the side-swept hair and fitted tuxedo. Whether you’re heading to a sophisticated fête or just a dinner with friends, follow these grooming tips to snag this A-list couple’s style.

Drew Barrymore recently stopped by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to chat about her beauty line and life as a new mom—but we were too busy ogling Ms. Barrymore’s adorable spring look (for an up close view, check out the video below) to hear everything she was saying. The actress sported an adorable weekend look combo of pretty pink lips, bouncy waves fastened in a high ponytail, and fetching foral-print jeans. Here’s how to recreate her look just in time for Saturday brunch:
Step 1: You won’t find a single blemish on Drew’s flawless complexion. Before applying your go-to complexion perfectors, prep your skin with a mattifier like MAKE’s Face Primer SPF 30.
My favorite hair trend right is the braid. I love that it exudes effortless style and it’s easy to do yourself (depending on what type you try). Even though the look has been around for forever, it’s evolved significantly and red carpets have helped take the style to new heights.
My personal favorite braid look is one that Blake Lively wore to The Emmy’s back in 2009. What’s awesome about this ‘do is that it’s a cinch to replicate, just follow these steps:
We’re guilty of sticking with the same hair cut for years—if it’s not broke, why fix it?—but that can be a little boring. But not everyone has our issue. Paulina, one of our amazing operations associates, is always eyeing new cuts and styles. She’ll be sharing her tress inspiration and tips every other week here via her Hairistocracy column.

I love musing over audacious hairstyles that, at the end of the day, I’m just too wimpy to take the plunge and try. Since alter-ego day (pick your dream superhero or profession!) is coming up this week at Birchbox HQ, I’ve been filling my head with extreme hair dares. With my imagination running, I finally settled on a look I’d love to go through with if I had the courage: a full-on blonde dye job (I’m naturally dark brunette) with bold dark brows à la Madonna in the ’80s!
We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Today is Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s 26th birthday! Through the years, we’ve seen these twin stars rise from style-setting entrepreneurs to CFDA award-winning designers, providing the world with first-rate fashion inspiration all along the way. In addition to their enviable garments, their flair for statement-making hair has been just as fun to watch. Here are four pioneering Olsen hair trends that are sure to stand the test of time.
Kate Middleton has a gorgeous head of long, brunette hair that she almost always wears flowing down over her shoulders. It’s a rare occasion when the Duchess of Cambridge decides to pull her hair back for an elegant updo—which is why her recent hairstyle at the BOA Olympic Concert (above) caught our eye. The braided loose bun was such a departure for everyone’s favorite real life princess, it inspired us to search for our other favorite up-looks from the British style icon. Yesterday, Shakira announced a sassy new bob (with eye-grazing bangs to boot) via Twitter. Just a few days ago, Katy Perry, Chloë Sevigny, and Emily Blunt all debuted shorter cuts, too. These ladies all took a big chance and cut off several inches, but there have also been a handful of starlets who have recently opted for the lesser commitment of brow-length bangs such as Taylor Swift, Rachel Weisz, and Mila Kunis. Is everyone getting an early jump on a new look for the New Year? Or has the holiday season become the go-to time for debuting a fresh style?
Yesterday, I took a break from my usual salad-in-front-of-laptop for a fun lunch with celebrity hair stylist Kristan Serafino. A real-life renaissance woman, Serafino styles celebs, designs runway looks, consults for brands, and hosts training sessions for young stylists. Oh, and that’s even before we start talking about her blog, Serafino Says. A mix of useful tips, behind the scenes pics, and inspirational ‘dos, Serafino’s blog is one of my latest obsessions. Whether she’s doling out tips on talking to your hairdresser or encouraging the revival of the 70s “Bang, Bump, and Flip,” Serafino is always helpful and entertaining.
In person, she was just as much fun. In between dishing out personalized hairstyle advice (apparently I’m headed for a long, seamless layers look with blunt bangs), she shared a few tips:
— Treat your haircare products like cocktails and mix them up! She suggests mixing a texturizing spray like Jonathan Dirt with a smoothing serum like Philip B Anti-Frizz Formula 57 Shine Drops to give hair both texture and sheen.
— The tips of your hair are like arrows — they draw the eye and direct your attention. Translation: If your hair just falls straight down, the eye goes down too. On the other hand, cheek-height layers that point inward will make you look like you have cheekbones.
—Don’t overlook the power of mousse. Instead of using it on damp hair, comb it directly into dry roots and blast hair with a dryer. You’ll get volume and lift.
—When pulling your hair into a ponytail, look upward. You’ll avoid getting that gap at the nape of your neck.
See, told you she was helpful! Scoot on over to Serafino Says for more helpful tips. And check out some of our hair must-haves in the Birchbox Shop.
Spotted: Leighton Meester at Troubadour in West Hollywood Monday night debuting a brand new look—a hairdo complete with bangs and absent of her normal highlights. Just a little over a week ago, we saw her strutting down the red carpet at the MTV Movie Awards in a glitzy dress and curly highlighted locks. It’ll be hard to keep up her tough-girl façade with this laid-back look though—my guess is that she’ll turn back into the power-hungry fashionista Blair Waldorf that we all know and love when the next season of Gossip Girl rolls around.
