How to Look Great Post-Flight, Tips for a Healthier Summer, The Staycation Guide, and More
We know you don’t have oodles of time to browse through everything on the Birchbox blog and in the magazine each week. Here’s a short list of the top blog posts, articles, videos, and news that we don’t want you to miss. Read them while you’re laying on the beach or relaxing indoors.
How To: Look Great After a Long Flight: We know it’s tough to look and feel gorgeous after a few hours in the air. Thankfully makeup artist Nam Vo shared her best pre-landing touchup tricks.
Like clockwork, we swap out our heavier foundation for CC cream and our dark jeans for sundresses the moment the temperatures rise above 60 degress. But before you drop the opaque lipstick for a tinted lip balm, consider a new alternative that has us rethinking our beauty routines.
Enter sheer lipsticks. These lightweight lip colors popping up everywhere right now, which means more options when it comes to updating your summer look.
There are a handful of beauty products that I have a serious weakness for: Chanel nail polishes, Serge Lutens perfumes, and BY TERRYanything. So when I had the chance to stop by the brand’s spring preview last week, I was pretty pumped to check out their new lipsticks, polish, and a super scientific skincare addition.
After buying the Rouge Terrybly lipstick in Frenetic Vermilion last spring—I’m obsessed—I became a convert to bold lip colors, but rarely find the right opportunity to wear it. (This is where every other Birchbox editor would say, “wear it literally all the time.”) After spending a week with their new Hyaluronic Sheer Rouge Hydra-balm lipstick, I’m pretty enamored. The formula includes hyaluronic acid to hydrate and it also has just the right amount of pigment to wear during the day at work or build for a deeper color when I’m heading out at night.
I’m also loving their new Cellularose brightening serum. I’ve been using Kiehl’s Dark Spot Solution to help tend to errant marks lately—but this rose-based option is quickly becoming my new favorite. The gel-like solution uses white rose native cells to brighten skin and flower acids to help even out skin tone. After using it for even a few days, I’ve seen a noticeable difference in my complexion.
We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
Besides it being awards season, there’s another reason why this is my favorite time of year: It’s the release of spring ad campaigns! Although I love the bundled up looks for fall, spring collections are always fresh, fun and bursting with brilliance. Plus, I get particularly hyped for the latest ads since the beauty is more experimental as well. From the slick hair and dark lip at Kurt Reiger to the peach lid and nude pout at Max Mara, here are the looks that I’m really feeling for spring.
One of my favorite Birchbox discoveries is Jouer’s Moisturizing Lip Gloss in ultra-flattering Birchbox Pink. The vitamin-packed formula soothes dry lips and adds a gorgeous fuchsia punch in a single, shimmery swoop. When I heard we’d be including more luscious colors of the gloss in our Birchbox Shop, I began dreaming up ways to put the new shades to use. Inspired by some of my favorite leading ladies, here are the looks I’ll be recreating with help from Jouer’s wonder gloss:
This week’s guest blogger, Kalyca Romeo of Romeostyle.com, is one seriously talented lady. After graduating from the Fashion Institute for Technology eight years ago, New York-based fashion insider has worked as a buyer, a designer, and a particularly savvy personal stylist. We’re loving her tips on crafting the perfect date night outfit, rocking the latest white styles, and test-driving fall/winter makeup looks right now.
Fashion is all about going against the grain, creating new trends, and breaking old rules. One of fashion’s most staid rules—no white after labor day—no longer applies. In fact, it’s one of my favorite colors to wear well into fall and winter. Here are a few of my favorite white outfits and accessories to pair with them.
This weekend, my best friend from college is getting married in Charlottesville, VA. Since the weather is going to be a steamy 100 degrees (yes, you read that right), I am taking my makeup seriously. After all, I don’t want to look like a melted bridesmaid in all the photos! I called on my friend Stefanie Syat, founder of PreDame parties and genius makeup artist, for a crash course in pretty, long-lasting bridesmaid makeup.
We’ve all been there: you get to the airport excited to start your trip and then 6, 8, 10 hours later you step off the plane disheveled, tired-looking, and dehydrated. But long flights don’t have to be miserable. If you’re going on vacation in the next few months (or even if you’re just dreaming about the beach) you’ll want to brush up on our tips for staying happy and healthy throughout the flight. Take a few precautions, and you’ll step off the plane looking just as fresh and chic as when you arrived at the airport.
For me, preparing for vacation usually means throwing everything I can into a bag out of paralyzing fear that I’ll need something I haven’t packed. It’s a terribly un-savvy way to pack and usually leaves me with a backache from carrying around an overloaded suitcase. But this summer I’m on a mission to change my ways—I’m going to invest in smart products that let me pack lighter without feeling like I’m sacrificing anything. My first pick: By Terry Light Expert Perfecting Foundation Brush.
