5 Polish Shades to Try for Winter: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

The hot trends last summer were pretty in-your-face (remember all of the screaming neons and chunky glitters we wore so often?). This season, I’m loving more subdued shades in rich jewel tones, plus some added sparkle, of course. Here are five shades to take you through the winter.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and everywhere I look, I’m seeing pink. The cheery color may seem better suited for spring and summer manis, but it’s actually one of my favorite colors to wear throughout fall and into winter. As the weather gets dreary and they days get darker, that vibrant pop of color is exactly what I need.

5 Tips to a Better Manicure from Butter London’s Katie Hughes

While running from show to show at New York Fashion Week, one familiar face that we kept seeing was Butter London's lovely new global color ambassador, Katie Hughes. As lead manicurist for the Butter London team, Katie was the brilliant mind behind nail designs at shows like The Row, Altuzarra, Band of Outsiders and Kaelen. Which is why we were so excited when she gave us her top tips for scoring a gorgeous, long-lasting manicure—they’ve completely changed our polish world.

1. Enough Polish On the Front of the Brush and Nothing On the Back: The Butter London bottle was designed to fit right between your thumb and forefinger. Holding it right there enables you to really work the brush so there’s enough polish on the front, and nothing on the back. That way you’ll get the perfect consistency and the polish will go on evenly. If you can control the consistency, you’ll get a smooth application.

6 Nail Polishes for a Conservative Work Place: Guest Blogger

We’re devoted fans of all things polish in the Birchbox offices, so of course Gina Galullo’s nail polish blog, Prim and Polished, caught our eye. A lawyer-by-day and a lacquer connoisseur-by-night, Galullo posts thoughtful reviews of new shades along with colorful swatches, so even novice polish-wearers have an insider’s guide to the prettiest hues. This week, she shares the products she can’t live without, plus the work-appropriate shades you can even rock in your cubicle.

I’m an attorney and while my office isn’t ultra conservative, court is—so I always try to dial it down when I know I’ll be there. Here are six nail polishes that I think work well in conservative situations, and all of them have awesome formulas.

1. Essie’s Topless & Barefoot: a pink, nude crème perfect for a day at work.

2. Butter London’s Yummy Mummy: a mauvey taupe with a very subtle silver shimmer.
