We’re big fans of this week’s guest blogger, Natalie Higdon. Not only is she a Tennessee resident and a connoisseur of all things Memphis; she’s also a contributor to the Birchbox magazine! (Don’t miss her stellar article on 5 Surprising Facts About SPF). This week, she interviews a hot new singer, reveals her favorite two-in-one products, and schools us on how to trim our own bangs.
I love two-in-one beauty products. They’re convenient, easy to stash in your purse, and best of all, they’re usually a pretty good deal. Here are a couple of my favorite two-fers:
SEPHORA COLLECTION Classic Double-Ended Flawless Complexion Brush
Sephora has a whole line of these double-ended makeup brushes and I think they might just be the best idea ever. Okay, maybe not a better idea than say, penicillin, but they’re still pretty nifty. Makeup brushes can be a little like pieces of silverware at a fancy dinner—if I have too many, I forget which one I should be using. By combining two brushes (the one above is for foundation and concealer), Sephora has eliminated some of the guesswork. Plus, how cute is the bright neon?
On a recent trip to the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics flagship store, we discovered their line of amazing makeup brushes. We’re big fans of these animal-friendly options (made from nylon and taklon) because they’re perfectly formed in hard-to-find shapes that make shadow application particularly easy.
This week’s guest blogger, the lovely Alissa Kelly, offers up fun fashion and beauty advice on her blog, Feeling Good. (Our favorite feature? Kelly’s fun nail posts!) We love her optimistic attitude and useful tips. Today she’s giving advice on something we routinely fail at: organization.
Ladies, I must admit: I own at least ten makeup brushes but usually only use one (an eye shadow brush). Obviously, something needed to change. I put my semi-OCD/organizational skills to work on my collection.
The dynamic duo behind Beauty Bender, Kathryn Romeyn and Alexis Johnson, have an impeccable eye for deciphering up-and-coming cosmetics trends and finding experts to give the lowdown on how to wear them. (It must be the decade’s worth of magazine curating experience they have between them.) We can’t get enough of their gorgeous site, and happily, for a whole week they’re sharing all of their beauty insight on our blog!
From left, Make Up For Ever’s Eyeshadow Brush #14S, Powder Brush #55N and Eyeshadow Brush #12S.
It’s hard enough finding the perfect shade of makeup to make us look our best, but picking the right brush—and knowing how to use it—is even tougher. We often find ourselves multi-purposing brushes willy-nilly to apply various cosmetics, but in reality, makeup brushes are designed to achieve specific effects on very targeted parts of the face. And they’re meant to be used with precise formulas.
Left: my everyday makeup essentials. Right: my brand new tools and products.
For years, my makeup bag has had the same lineup: a light mineral powder and bronzer, a concealer, a black liner, and a retro red lipstick. But with the holidays in full swing, I’ve been hankering after a little extra glamour.
Lucky me, I got the chance to sit down with Kimara Ahnert, celebrated makeup artist and founder of a fabulous new namesake cosmetics line. We convened at her chic Upper East Side studio to give my makeup bag a full makeover. According to Ahnert, women fall into one of two categories: beauty junkies who need their overflowing makeup bags edited down and minimalist ladies who could stand to add a few key products to their routine. Read on for Ahnert’s advice!
Dedicated to “what’s in your closet and on your vanity,” Samantha Fodrowski’s blog, Closet Vanity, couldn’t be more perfectly suited to our interests. This week, the busy blogger is lending us her talents and musing on some of our favorite topics like the fashion-forward red lip and au naturel makeup.
There’s a whole lot more to beauty than blushes, eye shadows, and lipsticks. Though I do occasionally apply my makeup with my fingers (who doesn’t love finger painting?), there are tools of the trade that make application, organization, and skin care so much more manageable — and fun!
As you may have figured out, we’re really excited about gifts this month. We love picking out the perfect treats for our friends and family. Besides our ongoing Gift-a-Day blog and our Gift Guide, we also tapped our our favorite makeup artists for their personal picks. They all have great ideas but one of our fave suggestions comes from LA based Lori Taylor. She says,
“Most of my family and friends never spend money on makeup brushes so I love giving a really great collection like Smashbox’s Holiday Brush Set.”
We have to agree, brushes are a great gift — something your friends will use a lot but probably wouldn’t splurge on themselves.
If you’re not a brush newbie yourself, check out our guide to four essential makeup brushes. For sets, we also love Laura Mercier’s Travel Brush Set, Benefit’s cute Betty Brushes up on Beauty Set, or Too Faced Teddy Bear Hair Professional Brush Set.
Keep checking back everyday for more Gift of the Day options and, if you really want more, watch our Editor’s Holiday Gift Picks Video!
