Holiday party season is about to kick into overdrive, and that means you need some new hair tricks to wow your friends, family, and coworkers—especially when you’re going straight from the office to the party.
1. Sock it to Me
Here at Birchbox HQ, Senior Social Media Manager Rachel reigns as the undisputed queen of the sock bun. Lucky for us, she’s willing to share the secrets behind her superior ‘do. Watch the twitter maven whip her hair into a bountiful and sleek-looking sock bun. To ace this look, start with healthy and hydrated hair. For a mini-mane makeover, we love Miss Jessie’s Leave-In Condish, which uses soybean extracts and glycerin to strengthen weak strands.
2. Keep Frizz Under Wraps
You don’t need Grace Kelly’s golden locks or summery weather to wear a hair wrap with style. Here are four easy ways to wear our favorite static-busting hair accessory and look incredibly glamorous while you’re at it. Make sure to smooth out stray flyaways with a small, round brush like Keratherapy’s Square Ceramic Curling Brush.
3. Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls (But Do Try this Waterfall Braid)
So you’ve mastered the French braid and aced the fishtail. Now what? The waterfall braid is the next big trend in braids—and it looks way more complicated than it actually is. This technique might take a bit of practice, but once you get the hang of it you’ll be braiding up a storm.
4. Live Happily Ever After with the Princess Roll
This hairstyle is about to become one of your go-to looks. It’s a classic, chic style that’s fitting for a day at the office or a weekend rendezvous. Best of all it takes less than five minutes, and anyone with medium-length to long hair can pull it off. All you need is a sturdy headband and some hairspray to finish. Watch to find out why our entire office loves the “Princess Roll.”
5. Feeling Fishy
Much like Shaggy’s dancehall hit ”It Wasn’t Me,” the basic French braid is so 2001. Right now, it’s all about the classic staple’s modern-looking successor: the French fishtail. This style is dressy and easier than it looks; it will have your holiday party date complimenting you on your creativity.
6. Make Waves
When we say our co-founder Katia’s hair inspires envy all over our office, it’s no joke. So we jumped on the chance to see exactly how she gets her signature waves. Turns out that her technique is quick and easy enough to do in twenty minutes before work.
7. Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown Braid
In another video favorite starring Katia, our fearless leader demonstrates how to get a pretty crown braid. Perfect for hot and cold weather alike, its a fool-proof way to camouflage slightly dirty hair and jazz up last year’s party frock.
8. A Tall (Pony) Tail
From your SO’s office party to your family’s Thanksgiving feast, this new take on the topsy tail (yes, that topsy tail) is sophisticated enough for any event. To make sure your upgraded pony stays sleek all night long, spritz on multitasking uniqONE All In One Hair Treatment, a lightweight styling mist that tames frizz, detangles, and demands more volume from limp strands.
9. We’re Mad for Mad Men-Inspired Bouffants
As if there weren’t enough reasons to love Mad Men, the women of the show have been sporting some majorly enviable hair height. Inspired by 1960s bouffant hairstyles, this piece-of-cake tutorial shows you how to get big hair with a retro twist. Watch to learn how to get this look in just a few simple steps.
10. The Braid-y Bunch
Meet the “Brunch Braid” (a.k.a. an upside-down French braid with a bun). This off-duty style can spice up last minute gatherings and otherwise-dull gift shopping. Re-create the look with this step by step tutorial.

How To: 360-Degree Braids
The braided updo is probably our favorite hair trend right now and it has no signs of vanishing as we get deeper into fall and winter. As gorgeous as it may be, however, attempting one of these woven styles on our own can be a bit intimidating and confusing.
Luckily, our Birchbox France editors have come to the rescue. Using a few spritzes of Beauty Protector Protect and Detangle, a handful of bobby pins, and a hair twist, these awesome 360-degree braids are a cinch.

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
I can’t believe it, but the day has finally come. My wedding is tomorrow (!) and I couldn’t be more excited. To ensure that my tresses are at their best before I walk down that aisle, I paid a visit to my go-to stylist, Janine Jarman of Shear Genius fame, to get a quick trim at her charming Hollywood salon Hairroin. (Fun fact: this spot is also a great place to score brilliant braids.)
Given that Jarman’s highly-publicized wedding looked like a dream, I couldn’t resist asking her for some helpful tips on hair for the big day. Read on for eight great takeaways, straight from the source.
1. Don’t hide behind your hair."Have your hair in such a way that a side of your face is exposed, because you don’t want to cover your face in pictures. If you have long hair, clear a shoulder before photos or tuck a few strands behind the ear."
Doing your hair can be a challenge and let’s face it: Throwing it up into a topknot every day gets boring. Christina over at Hair Romance believes your hair is your best accessory and it should always be treated at such. This week, she’s sharing all her best tips and tricks to make every day a good hair day.
Braids are one of the hottest hair trends and seen on catwalks all over the world during fashion week. From the basic braid seen at Valentino in Paris to the crown braids at Alice + Olivia in New York, braids are the “it” hairstyle you have to try right now.
