It’s spring and you have better things to do than blow out your hair. Happily, the braid craze isn’t going anywhere. Here are the three styles you have to try right now, there’s one for every proficiency level.
We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Erica Davidson is a star in L.A. for both her makeup wizardry and hair innovations. I knew she was a true innovator when she created this awesome pink root look for cult-favorite jewelry line Luv AJ’s latest lookbook. And talent runs in her blood: not only is Luv AJ designer Amanda Thomas her cousin, but Birchbox’s current guest-blogger Claire Thomas of The Kitchy Kitchen is her cousin, too!
Now that the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is fast approaching (what weekend are you going?), I thought it was the perfect time to ask Davidson which hairstyles she recommends sporting at the fest.
Our creative team is pretty, well, creative and they come across beautiful imagery all the time. Why not share the inspiration? Keep an eye out each Friday for their Mood Board, a collection of images they’re loving.

We are totally obsessed with braids here at Birchbox, and not just in hair. From belts to bags to even food, we love this layered and seemingly never ending pattern. In fact, one of our favorite pastimes is knitting, which is just a complicated form of a braid, meaning that our lives are truly inundated by these pretty woven patterns. If you’re interested in experimenting with a braid, we highly recommend checking out our tutorial on one of the coolest types: the fishtail.

Opening Ceremony’s second Rodarte collection photos are beyond precious — not just because the twin Dutch models bear a striking resemblance to Elle Fanning, but rather, they’re each donning a unique take on double braids. I usually resort to a Pippi Longstocking-type ‘do in the confines of my own apartment to give my stick-straight hair some kind of wave, but this style just looks so much more wearable and sophisticated. The updos mesh well with the Scandinavian-esque clothing, and while it looks complicated from the front, photos from the back reveal that the look is super simple — just pull each braided pigtail to the top of your head and pin. Undeniably cute.

Models at yesterday’s Erin Fetherston presentation. Here, a closer look at both the front and back of the hairstyle.
I was TOTALLY blown away when I walked into the backstage area at Erin Fetherston’s presentation last night. Maybe it’s just that I am a sucker for a pretty princess-y braid, but the second I spotted one of the model’s updos, I knew it was going to be my favorite hair look thus far during New York Fashion Week Fall 2011. Odile Gilbert, French hairstylist extraordinaire, masterminded the coifs and was there styling for Catwalk by TIGI. She explained, “The inspiration is romantic, very young and innocent.”
