Keep Blonde Hair Bright With Purple Shampoo

L’Oréal Professional White Violet shampoo, $19.55, and conditioner, $17.99.

Like most blondes, my color is not all natural—I get a little help. No shock there, but I’m really bad about upkeep and go for prolonged periods between hair appointments. Given that I sometimes wait five or six months before getting a touch up, it’s interesting that my biggest complaint is never my roots—it is how my color changes over time. When I first leave the salon after getting highlights, I feel like my hair looks bright and perfectly pale. A few weeks later though, it starts to become dull and brassy looking.

This past Saturday, I finally went to get some much-needed color and I told my stylist, Benjamin Fillingham at Arte Salon, that I have been having this issue. Apparently there is a solution! He says it’s all about integrating a purple shampoo and conditioner, like L’Oréal Professional’s White Violet (pictured above), into your haircare routine. Basically, violet and yellow are on opposite ends of the color wheel, so the purple products counteract any yellowing by depositing a touch of color directly onto porous, bleached hair. (Ah, chemistry is so cool.) One thing to note, don’t use your purple shampoo/conditioner every time you wash, just once a week or so for maintenance.

If you’re looking other shampoos and conditioners to try, we offer a well-curated selection in the Birchbox Shop.
