Hair and Makeup Tips from the Set of SUITS with Sarah Rafferty
From her gorgeous red locks to her impeccable fashion choices, we’re completely head over heels for Donna Paulsen, played by Sarah Rafferty on USA’s legal hit, SUITS. A few weeks ago we caught up with Rafferty to find out what it takes to get in character while on set. Her flawless look actually takes hours of hair and makeup (not to mention a little bronzer for her fair skin). You’ll be surprised how many products are used to achieve a camera ready look! But when she’s not filming, Rafferty, a mother of two, finds herself going for speed and efficiency with a few key products.
Watch the video to find out her beauty tips on set and which products she wears everyday in her regular beauty routine.
Who’s your favorite SUITS character?
The ladies of SUITS definitely steal the show. Check out our Birchbox Crush: Meghan Markle of SUITS!
By now you know that the July Birchbox is all about power player products. And we were lucky enough to have help from one of the most addictive (and sharply dressed) shows on the small screen: USA Network’s SUITS. The show’s stylists shared the products that help Donna and Rachel, the two female leads, look polished and unflappable under pressure.
1. Kérastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique - Prime
No matter how hairy the plot twists get, one thing remains steady: the actresses’ enviably sleek hair. The show’s stylists like this intensive treatment because it reverses heat and styling damage while restoring moisture.
2. Kérastase Elixir Ultime - Prime
Packed with four deeply nourishing oils (including potent argan oil), this miraculous leave-in treatment strengthens strands and boosts shine. Now if only it could take Rachel’s LSAT for her.
3. Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray
The only thing drier than executive assistant Donna’s wit? This Dry Texturizing Spray from Oribe. The waterless cleanser sops up grease while lifting roots for a perfectly tousled, voluminous look.
4. Deborah Lippmann Before He Cheats
If this pretty lacquer could protect against cheating (of the romantic and professional variety), the plot of SUITS would be a lot less complicated. Alas, what it does prevent: nail breakage and unsightly ridges.
5. Deborah Lippmann Amazing Grace
“Grace under pressure” may as well be certain characters’ personal mantras on the show. This opaque white lacquer makes a cool demeanor look effortless (key word being “look”).

Birchbox Crush: Meghan Markle of SUITS
You might have heard already (or received your July box), but in case you haven’t, here’s a quick refresher: This month we’ve teamed up with USA’s hit show SUITS in honor of the season 3 premiere, which airs tonight, 7/16 at 10pm ET!
If you’re as obsessed with the show as we are, you’ll understand why we’re crushing on the gorgeous Meghan Markle. We love the mix of her cool California girl attitude and ambition (not to mention her enviable style on the show). Her character Rachel Zane is smart, sexy, and driven, much like Markle herself. Surprisingly, Markle has some strikingly similar career experiences to her SUITS character—let’s just say she has a fascinating past working in foreign service. Watch the video to find out more about her unexpected path to Hollywood, her must-have beauty product and more!

It’s not everyday that you get to see how a television show is really made. But since Birchbox is partnering with the USA series SUITS this month, I had the very cool opportunity of visiting the show’s set, which is located just outside Toronto. Better still was being able to sit down with the lead cast members to discuss upcoming plot lines and favorite moments. Whether you’re a fan of SUITS or just want to know more about how television magic is made, here’s the play-by-play of my day on set:
Outside of the massive warehouse-like space where the set is located.
9:30AM: It’s go time! I head downstairs to the hotel lobby and meet up with the nine other journalists who are also in town to tour the set and chat with actors Gabriel Macht (Harvey Specter), Patrick Adams (Mike Ross), Rick Hoffman (Louis Litt), Meghan Markle (Rachel Zane), Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen), and Gina Torres (Jessica Pearson).
