Tuesday night’s raucous Betsey Johnson show was not only a retrospective of the designers’ rocker duds from the 60s till now, but also a banging birthday party for the freshly minted 70-year-old. In honor of Betsey, models were given ’80s style crimped hair and cleopatra-esque eyes.
Lead stylist John Reyman from Aveda created the throwback hairstyle section-by-section, first spritzing a protective layer of Control Force hair spray before using a crimper. To reduce frizz, hair was brushed out with the fingers and then back-combed around the parietal ridge to create volume. “It’s inspired by Betsey Johnson herself,” said Reyman. “Her kind of fun, crazy hair—it’s 80s and it’s crimped, it’s par-tay. Think White Snake circa 1987.”

It’s the last weekend in April, which means May flowers are just around the corner and rain showers are (hopefully!) behind us. Before you get to your weekend plans, read our favorite stories from around the web. It was quite a week in hair news and the end of an era for one fashion industry mainstay, so you won’t want to miss this week’s list.
- The big news in the fashion world yesterday was the announcement that Betsey Johnson has filed Chapter 11 and, it sounds like, will be closing up shop immediately. In true Betsey style though, a farewell party was held yesterday for employees (now unemployed), with cupcakes and champagne. [Elle]
- Zooey Deschanel is nearly as famous for her signature bangs as she is for her acting career. We’re not surprised to hear she just landed a major spokesmodel gig with Pantene. [Fashion etc]
- Jennifer Connelly switched up her color this week and went blonde for her new movie, “Virginia.” While we miss her glossy brown locks, the movie looks great! [Huffington Post]
- We can’t get enough of nail polish collaborations, especially when they come out ahead of schedule. The new Thakoon x NARS polishes were released at Nordstrom this week and we can hardly wait to pick them up. [SheFinds]

Dedicated to “what’s in your closet and on your vanity,” Samantha Fodrowski’s blog, Closet Vanity, couldn’t be more perfectly suited to our interests. This week, the busy blogger is lending us her talents and musing on some of our favorite topics like the fashion-forward red lip and au naturel makeup.
There’s a whole lot more to beauty than blushes, eye shadows, and lipsticks. Though I do occasionally apply my makeup with my fingers (who doesn’t love finger painting?), there are tools of the trade that make application, organization, and skin care so much more manageable — and fun!
Last night’s Betsey Johnson show was bold, fun, and full of color — everything we’d expect from the queen of punk pop. Our favorite makeup artist, Stila’s Sarah Lucero, created a look that really popped with color and sass. Lucero said they wanted to the models feel “voluptuous and va va voom.” The lips stood out with a combination Stila Long Wear Liquid Lip Color in Petal layered under Stila Lip Enamel in Giggle, a truly shocking hot pink. For even more oomph, the models’ eyes were given the cat eye treatment on top with Stila Black Smudge Pot and Stay All Day Liner. The addition of a silvery liner along the bottom lashline and false lashes made their eyes look huge.
Meanwhile, Nonie Creme from butter LONDON was applying nails that would fit right in at a New York Dolls concert. Each model’s nails were painted black and covered with a metallic, almond shaped false nail to create what Creme called a reverse moon mani. The false nails (a huge timesaver backstage), were painted with Diamond Geezer and given a single diamante gem in the center. As if that weren’t cool enough, small black safety pins were sporadically poked through the false nails.
