The Quintessential Spring Fashion and Beauty Look
Spring and summer are my happiest times of year because I can wear my favorite clothes. (Note: I am an u-g-l-y cold weather dresser—I spend the entirety of the winter bundled in a rather unflattering Patagonia puffer.) With warm days just around the corner—fingers crossed—I am ready to shed my un-chic layers and embrace my most beloved trend of the season: chambray.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the Madewell store recently (everyone on Birchbox’s mailing list got a $25 off $75+ and I took full advantage) and as a result, I’m really inspired to layer denim on denim—on denim! If you and I happen to have my same taste, then you’re in luck: I’ve shopped out my fave Madewell look from head to toe.
- Jean Vest: There’s something really badass about a shrunken denim vest. It adds edge to even the girliest of outfits and is just as great over long sleeves as it is over tank tops.
- Perfect Chambray Ex-boyfriend Shirt: The loose fit and light wash make this a versatile essential.
- Skinny Skinny Ankle Jean in Black Frost Wash: If you don’t have a great pair of slim-fit black denim in your closet, run (don’t walk) and pick up a pair stat. These go with everything.

Benefit’s Benetint is one of those makeup bag staples that every beauty editor and beauty junkie seems to own no matter what. It’s not hard to see why it’s a universal favorite: Just a few swipes of this rose-hued cheek and lip stain gives you a seriously pretty flush that lasts for hours.
But while you might be more than familiar with the product, do you know about the cheeky—dare we say slightly racy—origins of Benetint?
Blush and I have always been buddies. The brighter, the better. I still remember playing with my mom’s demure rose-colored shade when I was in middle school and thinking, ‘This is it?’ It’s no wonder that Bobbi Brown’s Apricot was my favorite shade for a good ten years.
We love surfing Heather Walczuk’s blog, Beauty Unbiased, for her smart and on-point makeup reviews, pretty photos and her upbeat insight. The resident New Yorker always has great tips for making the most out of your products, which is why we’re excited that this week she’s sharing tips about her fave summer finds, makeup-artists must-haves, and how to get a gorgeous top knot.
It’s become inevitable lately that when I mention my blog, I’m asked about my favorite beauty products. Of course, then I’ll suddenly blank on the name of my new favorite mascara that I’ve just tweeted about. When social anxiety kicks in, I drop-kick it back to my new acquaintance by asking for their personal favorite beauty picks. See how I did that? Reverse beauty psychology. I steal their favorite beauty ideas and they leave feeling good about having shared their knowledge with me. It’s the main reason I love Birchbox—new beauty finds every month with minimal work on my part! That’s what I call a win-win.
Here are four of my favorite summer beauty discoveries that I’ve borrowed from other people:
1. Benefit’s Benetint: While Benetint has been around forever, I had an aversion to trying stains for a long time. But since I kept hearing friends rave on and on about it, I decided to give it a shot. It leaves a rosy glow that lasts all day but feels so lightweight.
This week, we’re lucky enough to have the uber-talented Grace of Stripes and Sequins on board for a week of blogging fun. As one of our most loyal fans — she was one of Birchbox’s beta members and has been with us ever since — we’re thrilled to have her on the blog. She’s a DIY whiz, savvy beauty and fashion blogger, and one of the nicest people we know. First up: Grace’s Beauty Essentials.
Like any beauty product junkie, my must-have product list has a revolving door. I’m constantly on the hunt for new products, so I’m always switching it up. But these are some that I can’t live without.
Right now, I’m all about hydration. Cetaphil Body Cream is an oldie but a goodie. It’s the richest body cream I’ve found, and gentle enough to (gasp!) use on my face when it gets really dry. Sunday Riley Juno Facial Oil is also amazing. Although spreading oil on your face seems a bit counterintuitive, this one is lightweight and absorbs incredibly quickly. I put a thin layer just after washing my face, and my skin is instantly happy. I’m a little bit obsessive-compulsive about eye cream. I tried Face It’s Smooth Eye-Operator a year ago and was instantly hooked. It zaps dark circles while hydrating intensely.
As far as beauty products go, for lips I’ve gone back to another favorite: Benetint. I apply a coat, do my eye makeup, and then apply clear gloss. The tint/gloss combination is just…juicy! To give my skin a glow, I use Jouer Luminizing Moisture Tint. (Discovered this one via Birchbox and instantly became obsessed!) I use only the tiniest amount on my cheeks, temples, and brow bone – it instantly brightens winter skin. For eyes, I’m addicted to Rimmel London Lash Accelerator Mascara. This stuff proves that drugstore mascara works just as well as the expensive stuff. It lengthens and separates like no other.
I have thick, wavy hair and I swear by Moroccan Oil. I cringe a little bit writing it, as the stuff has gotten so much buzz. But it works, plain and simple. Once my hair dries, I use Garnier Glossing Spray (another blogger introduced me to this and it’s amazing – works just as well as Fekkai) to de-frizz and sleekify.
