A Peek Inside My Nail Art Tool Kit: Guest Blogger

Nail art is a Birchbox obsession. One of the first places we look for inspiration is Glitter, She Wrote, Anna Norman’s cheery, imaginative blog, where she shares her gorgeous designs and muses about life in the Big Apple. This week, Anna takes us inside her nail guru world, and will show us how to get gorgeous, DIY art on our fingertips.

I often tell people that the top two things you need for nail art are creativity and patience—but having the right products and tools certainly helps, too. Here’s a peek at the items I keep on hand, so I’m ready to rock whenever nail inspiration strikes.

1. I love the look of short, well-groomed nails, so nail care basics like clippers, buffers, and files (including this adorable heart-shaped file from Birchbox) are essential.

2. A good top coat adds shine, smooths brushstrokes, and keeps chipping at bay. All year I’ve been using and loving Wicked Fast from the up-and-coming polish brand Cult Nails. Sally Hansen Hard as Nails is also a great, easier-to-find choice.

College Girl: Beauty Products With A Caffeine Kick

This summer, Birchbox’s content team is extremely lucky to have awesome intern Shana in the office. She’s a student at Syracuse University (the smarty pants is a dual major in magazine journalism and psychology) and she’ll be helping with researching, writing, product testing and, of course, blogging. In addition to daily beauty news posts, she’ll be writing a weekly column called College Girl.

Life before college included lots of chocolate milk and very few caffeinated beverages, but a month into freshman year, my iced coffee-addicted friend Cara got me completely hooked. Though I haven’t reached her level of two large Dunkin Donuts’s coffees a day, I completely understand how essential these pick-me-ups are to make it through long nights of studying.

Lately, I’ve been hearing a ton of buzz about caffeinated beauty products. After a bit of digging around, I discovered that this isn’t exactly a new trend—beauty companies have been incorporating caffeine into their offerings for years because of its beneficial effects on the skin like depuffing, tightening, and smoothing. The best part: unlike your morning cup, the caffeine in these products doesn’t make them addicting—so lather up rather than drink up. Here are my favorites:

Befine Night Cream: Your homework won’t get done while you sleep, but with this overnight product, you can cross glowy skin off your to-do list. The potent cocoa and caffeine will heal and hydrate skin while you focus on getting your eight hours.

Kiehl’s Facial Fuel Eye De-Puffer: Waking up is especially hard after a long night. Swipe this stick over your eyes to reduce puffiness and cover up all evidence of exhaustion.

Bliss Love Handler: Slacking at the gym is completely understandable. Because you can’t always hide under baggy sweatpants, the caffeine in this will help smooth and tighten problem spots.

There are plenty of other products worth waking up for in our Birchbox Shop.

The Beauty of Froyo: College Girl

This summer, Birchbox’s content team is extremely lucky to have awesome intern Shana in the office. She’s a student at Syracuse University (the smarty pants is a dual major in magazine journalism and psychology) and she’ll be helping with researching, writing, product testing and, of course, blogging. It’s easy to get caught piling on extra toppings at your favorite frozen yogurt joint—a danger of self-service. Personally I have an unhealthy obsession with the Red Mango right by my summer dorm, and my brother’s endless supply of gift cards has really fueled my addiction. If you’re a topping hoarder like me, read on for a few healthy yet delicious options that should always make the cut. All of these natural ingredients will also benefit your skin, so I’ve also included product recommendations that will help you incorporate them into your skincare routine as well.

Blueberries: I’ve been known to pop one of these in my mouth and the next thing you know, the entire container is gone. But with this fruit, you shouldn’t worry about holding back. Blueberries are a high source of antioxidants, and work specifically to help reverse damage to skin cells and maintain youthful-looking skin. The blueberries in Alchimie’s Kantik Mask actually work to reduce redness in your skin, so you’ll ave a flawless complexion in no time.

Almonds: Another tasty and portable treat, almonds filled with fat-burning fibers, their antioxidants are great for skin health, and they have a reputation for being a great brain food. Plus, they’re packed with Vitamin B, which promotes hair and nail growth. Befine Exfoliating Cleanser is rich with almonds that will sooth and hydrate your skin, leaving you with a fresh palate before you apply any makeup.

Cranberries: Like blueberries, cranberries are full of protective antioxidants. Infections don’t stand a chance against this healthy treat, and research indicates that your gums can benefit as well. Cranberries work their magic on your skin in Pangea Organics Facial Scrub as they dissolve dead skin cells during exfoliation.

Honey: No need for an energy drink, honey will give you a boost when you need it and also protect your immune system. The sticky-sweet substance can also help heal small cuts, wounds, and burns. Nuxe Honey Reve de Miel Lip Balm is infused with honey to moisturize, soften, and heal your lips. So next time you’re reaching for the chocolate syrup, opt for honey instead.

Skin Rx: Which Anti-Aging Products are Right for You?

In this week’s installment of Skin Rx, Rachel, our brand manager/aesthetician takes on a complicated subject: anti-aging. How early is too early for eye cream? What should you be doing in your 40s so that you’ll be wrinkle-free well into your 60s? Read on to find out.

In your 20s…

Begin to incorporate a super emollient eye cream into your regimen. Dr. Dennis Gross’s Lift and Lighten is ideal because it has de-puffing and tightening qualities. Quarterly facials are an important proactive step at this age — they’ll pay off in the long run.

In your 30s…

Choose products that have AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acids - the most well-known is glycolic acid) in the ingredients.Try Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel, which uses a slew of natural fruit acids — apple, grape, orange — to erase fine lines and keep skin turning over new cells. Follow with the brand’s Stem Cellular Repair moisturizer. Invest in professional skin care treatments like hydrating facials and microdermabrasion.

In your 40s…

Antioxidants are your best friend. Both vitamin A and vitamin C serums have antioxidants that help reduce the amount of damage that free radicals do to our cells. In addition, using a rich night cream will keep your skin hydrated during the time that it works the hardest! Befine Night Cream is a great choice.

In your 50s and 60s…

Use serums that have peptides in them. Peptides alleviate the signs of aging by increasing collagen production. This helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles and makes the skin thicker. This is also a great time to begin chemical peels and continue with microdermabrasion. The Dr. Gross Alpha Beta Peel is a great at-home treatment in between professional visits!

For all ages: Don’t forget about those good old treatments: sleep and hydration! Both of these help combat signs of aging.

I’m sick and tired…of looking tired: You’ve Got Male

Once a week, Birchbox’s resident Yoga and men’s product expert, Eric, will give us girls some insight into his world in You’ve Got Male. Whether he’s giving his expertise on skincare (boys need advice, too!) or highlighting his new favorite grooming trend, this guy has got taste—so we’re lucky he’s on staff and willing to share.

BeFine Night Cream, $30,

Whether you are a guy reading this or the lady in his life, we all know the problem: It’s really hard not to look tired all the time when we all work as hard (and sleep as little) as we do. Gals get the leg up in this department with the ability to use under eye concealers to mask and brighten dark circles, eyeliner and mascara to open the eyes up, and color on the face to bring life to tired-looking skin. Since we dudes don’t have as many options, here are some of my tips for beating the puffy-eye-saggy-skin blues.

1. Use a night cream: We must be preemptive. What better way to optimize our time than to improve our skin while we sleep? I like the Befine Night Cream because it’s naturally healing and hydrating, and it also has caffeine which increases circulation and perks up dull looking skin.

2. Use an eye cream: I know the guys are reluctant, but puffy eyes and dark circles are the number one culprit when it comes to looking tired. My favorite quick fix is Fresh Lotus Eye Gel because it’s light and smooth and feels very cooling – good for early mornings on too little sleep. (If you want to be an overachiever, splurge on 3Lab WW Eye Cream at night for lots of hydration and age prevention.)

3. Use the right shaving cream: Continue to perk up your skin while you shave. Kiehl’s Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream: White Eagle has menthol and camphor to keep your skin tingly and awake.

4. Use a Neti Pot: This ancient remedy, which has its roots in yoga, irrigates the nasal passages and reduces inflammation in the sinuses, minimizing the appearance of bags and dark circles. I use my Neti Pot every morning. It also helps with staying well and breathing more easily in general.

If you’re in the market for a new face wash, the BeFine Exfoliating Cleanser is effective and it’s granular texture is not the least bit girly.
