Spa-Worthy Bath Products from Italy: Today’s Obsession

When I think “luxury at home,” the one thing that comes immediately to mind is a long soak in the tub. Like Birchbox’s DIY face mask expert, I have certain demands for my self-administered spa treatments. A quality bath has to be piping hot, smell good, soothe my achy muscles, and if it’s really worth its salt, leave me feeling relaxed after I step out and dry off.

Ok, so it might be a tall order. But for the longest time, I thought it was nothing a drugstore lineup of Vitabath and Epsom Salts couldn’t handle. Little did I know that once I entered the Birchbox world, I would crave a bathtime upgrade. And let’s just say there was no going back once I gave luxe Italian brand Borghese's bath products a shot.

Post-Vacation Skin Detox: Guest Blogger

This week’s guest blogger, Rodan Luo, is a lawyer by day and stylish blogger by night. We can’t get enough of her blog, full of eloquent musings and excellent advice. Since she’s also one of our jetsetter role models (the frequent traveler was most recently in Sayulita, Mexico), she’ll be blogging all week about ways to make travel even more awesome.

When I was young summer meant three things: swimming pools, watermelon, and vacation. Now that I’m older, traveling has become one of the most important things in my life and one of the main reasons I continue to love summer so much. I’ll be here all week to give tips and ideas to make travel (and recovering from travel) easy and fun.

Since most of us are in Memorial Day Recovery Mode, today I’m focusing on the importance of detoxing. Our bodies work naturally to detoxify every day, but sometimes they become overloaded (those margaritas, that pan of brownies). Detoxing is a great way to help our body rebalance itself. Here are three skin detox ideas that will help you achieve glowing skin without the commitment of a raw food diet or juice cleanse.

Bathtime Challenge: Simple Soak

We don’t have much time for lounging in the tub, and we’re betting that you don’t either. But there’s something to be said for stopping to smell the bath salts. Which is why we sampled AHAVA’s bath salts in some of this month’s Birchbox deliveries — just a gentle reminder to take the time to relax! To get you excited, we’re bringing back the Bathtime Challenge, this spring’s five-part series all about soaking and scrubbing.

So far, The Bathtime Challenge has helped us seen bath salts in a couple new ways: First as a body scrub and then as a facial bath. Last night, I decided to go back and use them in the standard fashion. After a very long day, I decided to see if AHAVA’s Eucalyptus salt could calm my achy muscles. The salts help release muscle tension and the smell of eucalyptus is known for it’s calming effect.

Drawing a very hot bath, I sprinkled in a cap full of salt. The smell was very strong (in a good soothing way) filling the bathroom with a heavy steam-shower type aroma. Once in the bath, I decided to really let the salts go to work by soaking for ten minutes with a warm cloth draped over my eyes. The salts and fragrance really helped me relax right before getting into bed. If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to unwind this is definitely the way to go. They’re an easy way to bring the spa to you.

Bathtime Challenge: Scrub Savvy

We don’t have much time for lounging in the tub, and we’re betting that you don’t either. But there’s something to be said for stopping to smell the bath salts. Which is why we sampled AHAVA’s bath salts in some of this month’s Birchbox deliveries — just a gentle reminder to take the time to relax! To get you excited, we’re bringing back the Bathtime Challenge, this spring’s five-part series all about soaking and scrubbing. Day two: Scrub savvy.

Bath salts are more versatile than you’d think. Last night, as part of the Bathtime Challenge, I decided to turn AHAVA’s mineral salts into a scrub and see how they act as an exfoliator. Using olive oil as the base (you don’t need very much), I sprinkled in some salt and layered the mixture on my arms and legs. With a little gentle scrubbing, the salts eventually dissolved into a slick layer of scented oil. Using a wash cloth, I then wiped everything off and did a quick rinse.

Sure, most people take showers. But for me, soaking in the tub is the norm and a part of my everyday routine. My habit of taking baths is a true case of monkey see, monkey do: It was my mother’s method for getting clean, as well as my older sister’s, so it was inevitable that I would follow suit.

Face A-Salt:The Bathtime Challenge

Last night, The Bathtime Challenge actually took me out of the bath. We always hear about how great bath salts are for the skin, but that usually means our arms and legs. What about using bath salts as a skincare remedy for your face? Odd or beneficial?

I put this question to the test by drawing what’s called a facial bath. Essentially it’s a bath, but in your sink. Using very warm to hot water, I filled my sink and poured a cap full of the AHAVA Bath Salts into the pool. I then took a clean wash cloth and soaked it in the facial bath for two minutes, giving it ample time to really absorb the salty water. Finally, I rung out the wash cloth (be careful, this can be very hot) and pressed it against my skin. Taking deep breaths in, I continued to press the cloth against my skin and avoided any type of rubbing.

You might find this method a little offbeat, but the results are truly fantastic. Not only does this help you relax (the aromatic salts have a calming effect), but my skin immediately looked more glowy and fresh. I’m telling everyone I know to incorporate this bath-salt-facial compress into his/her nightly skincare routine a couple times a week, especially if they’re looking to relieve themselves of any all-around stress.

Scrub A Dub Dub: The Bathtime Challenge

Bath salts are more versatile than you’d think. Last night, as part of the Bathtime Challenge, I decided to turn AHAVA’s mineral salts into a scrub and see how they act as an exfoliator. Using olive oil as the base (you don’t need very much), I sprinkled in some salt and layered the mixture on my arms and legs. With a little gentle scrubbing, the salts eventually dissolved into a slick layer of scented oil. Using a wash cloth, I then wiped everything off and did a quick rinse.

The result? Polished, silky smooth skin! But be careful. I can’t emphasize enough that your scrubbing should be very light. If you’re too aggressive, you could scratch your skin, which would lead to stinging because well…it’s salt! While I did the scrub in the bath, you could certainly apply the same method in the shower—although I am partial to the bath, of course.

Post bath or shower, we recommend using AHAVA’s Mineral Body Lotion to really make your skin super-soft.

Let The Bathtime Challenge Begin!

Sure, most people take showers. But for me, soaking in the tub is the norm and a part of my everyday routine. My habit of taking baths is a true case of monkey see, monkey do: It was my mother’s method for getting clean, as well as my older sister’s, so it was inevitable that I would follow suit.

Given that I’ve taken a lot of baths in my time, and I’m starting to wonder if there’s a way to get a little more out of this ritual. Working at Birchbox, I have plenty of great products at my fingertips— I’m going to take advantage of our newly added AHAVA’s signature bath salts to shake things up. This post marks the beginning of the Bath Time Challenge. Everyday this week I will be testing out either a different type of AHAVA Bath Salt or a non-traditional bath salt application to get more out of what has become a mundane event. Will I be more zen by the end of the week? Check back everyday to find out!
