Get the Look: Jennifer Lawrence’s Makeup from Oscars 2013: Birchbox Intern Diaries

Jennifer Lawrence has been headed towards ‘It Girl’ status for quite a while now and her big win at the Oscars on Sunday evening solidified it.  After seeing her stunning Dior gown, paired with a romantic up-do and a subtle smoky eye, I was dying to recreate the look.

Watch this week’s Birchbox Intern Diaries video to see how I recreate Jennifer Lawrence’s Oscar Awards makeup in just a few simple steps!

Packing List: India!

We’ve got another packing list for your voyeuristic pleasure. (What can we say — it’s the height of summer travel season!) This is a very special list: our dear HBS intern Freya is leaving us and the country. She’s off to India for her brother’s three-day wedding extravaganza. Here’s what she’s packing:

Bare Escentuals True Gold Eye Shadow: The perfect shimmery gold dust — beautifully accentuates brown eyes and all shades of olive skin.

Kohl: Women across India and the Middle East have used black “kohl” on their eyes for centuries (think Cleopatra!). Not only did kohl-lined eyes lure in unsuspecting men, they also protected eyes from the sun’s glare (think Ray Lewis!). I get the effect with Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner in carbon black.

Essie Big Spender: Love this dark fuschia polish for fingers and toes — it’s festive and matches the colors of India.

Kohlapuri Sandals: These leather sandals are worn all over the streets of India by young and old, women and men. They are the perfect respite from heels and go with everything!

Herban Essentials Towelettes in Lemon: These anti-bacterial towelettes are an absolute must after riding around in rickshaws and handling rupees.

Malkha Loungewear: Pre-India’s independence, Gandhi advocated wearing homespun Indiancotton, instead of importing British textiles. Today, cotton textile production remains one of India’s largest industries. Malkha, an NGO started by my aunt Uzramma, preserves traditional handloom cotton production. The result is just divine!

Guest Blogger: Accentuate Your Eyes

There are some pretty big sports fans at Birchbox HQ — and not just the Matts! This week, we’re excited to have Amanda Balionis, a bonafide sports expert guest blogging for us. After working as an intern for the New York Jets and the New York Islanders while at Hofstra University, Balionis went on to become a sideline reporter for Verizon FiOs1 Sports and later a MSG Show host in New York. Incidentally, she spent years battling the elements (and her pride) trying to maintain a professional on-camera appearance in torrential rain, high winds, and 100 degree weather. Having suffered beauty blunders publicly, the Florida-based sports anchor is excited to share her best tips—hopefully you can avoid some of the embarrassment she’s endured.

Yesterday I gave you some tips that work for me when it comes to keeping a fresh face when you’re working outdoors all-day and today I’m narrowing in on eye makeup in particular.

I’ve found that a light shimmery, eyeshadow works best and stays on the well throughout the whole day. Avoid sparkles, unless you’re under the age of 18. Also, a light, iridescent shade isn’t noticeable if it starts to wear off, but a smokey eye is near impossible to keep pristine in heat and humidity. Last week I was out covering an event for work and I fell in love with Josie Maran’s eye shadows. This eco-friendly brand just can’t go wrong and absolutely nails it when it comes to eye colors that aren’t over the top. Some shades to try are Beach, Embrace, and Parfait. Bare Minerals also has incredible hues and their pinks are perfect for the daytime.

Skin Was In At VPL

The facial station backstage at VPL utilizing Clarisonic and Intraceuticals products.

Aside from messy hair, the other major trend I have been noticing as I bounce around New York Fashion Week has been the love affair with dewy, fresh skin. Case in point: At yesterday’s VPL show, the backstage action was all focused on skin — so much so that the models received super-charged facials with Clarisonic and Intraceuticals products before sitting down for makeup. As Eileen Harcourt, the celebrity esthetician providing the treatments explained, “For VPL, skin is an accessory.” (I must admit, I’ve never thought about it like that.) “When they’re going down the runway,” she said, “They’re glowing.” It’s a nice treat for the models as well, Harcourt admitted. “The girls now come super early to the show so they can have their spa moment, so it’s a nice pick-me-up for them.” Well, that’s one way to make sure the talent shows up on time.

Models got either an orange eye or an orange lip.

Once the girls were sufficiently fresh faced, the next stop was getting was sitting down with a team from Bare Escentuals. Resident makeup artist for the brand, Alexandra Pappas, said of the look, “The skin is going to be really luminous, just really beautiful, natural, and glowy.” Since it was more about enhancing the models’ features than anything else, the few key products were: the Prime Time Brightening Pearl Eyelid Primer, used to highlight the top of the cheekbones and inner corners of the eyes, and the Bare Minerals Illuminating Mineral Veil, which Pappas pointed out “helps to draw light to those area of the face where you don’t normally have any highlight.”
