How to Avoid Breakouts During Your Holiday Travels

Avoid impending holiday zits with these handy dermatologist tips. (Photo: blog.onetravel.com)

It never fails—I go on a trip and my skin freaks out (hence, the great big post-Turkey Day pimple on my forehead). But it’s not like I’m using anything new or different. When traveling, I bring along the same ol’ skincare regimen and use it the same ol’ way. So, what’s the deal? According to Paul Jarrod Frank, M.D., a New York City dermatologist, “Constant traveling can really take a toll on skin, no matter what your destination is.”  Here’s what he says could be to blame for the zits and excessive flakiness some of us endure during vacay.

Do or Don’t: Nail Decals

You know those mini-heart and rhinestone-star nail stickers that 4-year-olds wear? I love them and wear them too! (Especially these crafty ones from Kate Broughton). I like to haphazardly put one or two in the corner of each nail, and then finish them with a super-shiny clear top coat. My fingers will stay like that for literally two weeks—even longer, if I retouch the topcoat once or twice a week.

I can say, first-hand, that there are techniques you can use to wear these tiny stickers so they look adult, fun, and totally chic. Read on for my tips on wearing the look with a grown-up spin.

It’s been quite some time since I’ve participated in the whole back to school thing. Yet, this time of the year still brings back a rush of good-feelings, since it reminds me of being a school girl and prepping for my first day of class. While other girls fussed over outfits or debated what sneakers they’d rock, I was always thinking about picking the perfect mascara to make my lashes look longer and fuller than they did last year.

I’m still as much of a beauty dork now as I was then. I’ve been inspired (and a little jealous) of all the students hitting the books, so I compiled a few of the coolest fall beauty trends that we all should try:

Ayren and her guy, back in the day, before being bald was cool.

Pop Quiz: You’re single and you have three guys to pick from for a date. All of the fellas are physically equal (let’s just say that they’re all in Usain Bolt shape), and the only difference is their hair. Who do you choose?

A. The guy with a full head of thick, curly strands.
B. The looker with visibly thinning fringe.
C. The man with a completely shaved head.

Ayren’s little sister.

I have a dozen or so beauty icons: Dita Von Teese and her sultry burlesque look, Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra, Beyonce in anything—and that’s just to name a few. But, when it comes to retro beauty, my biggest inspiration is my younger sister.

What Will Replace the Topknot this Summer?

Last summer (and fall and winter) was all about the topknot. And for good reason. The style is simple, cute, versatile and works on every hair texture imaginable. I have dreadlocks and I ALWAYS whip them into a topknot. But all good trends must come to an end (we’ll save the fact that trends are cyclical and always make a comeback for a separate post).

With the impending demise of the high bun, the question of the summer is: What is the new top knot? It’ll be tough to find a style that is both high-fashion and low-maintenance, and versatile enough to work with everything from fine and straight tendrils to super thick and curly strands. Here are three possible contenders straight from Birchbox’s Pinterest hair board.

Which Side is Your Better Side?

Ayren’s left and right side respectively.

Ever since my little brother accidentally threw his football into my right cheek when I was in the sixth grade, I’ve preferred having my photo taken on my left side. I guess I subconsciously always envision a swollen, black-and-blue right cheekbone and eye socket. But, it seems there’s more to my predisposition than meets the eye (er, football). A Wake Forest University study recently published in the journal Experimental Brain Research found that people view the left side of a face to be more pleasant. I decided to test out the study’s findings on some of my family and friends. First up my husband…

This weekend marked my sixth move in eight years. You’d think I’d be a pro by now. But alas, the whole process still kicks my booty, especially now with a baby in the mix (breaking down and putting-back-together a crib is no joke!). My arms feel like jelly; my back feels like it’s carrying a Toyota; and my face…oh, let’s just say that my skin has seen better days. What I need now is a vacation. And a 15-hour massage. And a super-moisturizing facial. Since the trip and marathon massage are out of the question—there’s hours upon hours of unpacking to do, people—this at-home facial inspired by The Spa at Nayara Hotel, Spa and Gardens in Alajuela Province, Costa Rica will have to do. When you can’t go to Costa Rica, bring Costa Rica to you.

Reduce Stress With Your Beauty Products

April is National Stress Awareness Month. (Mini-tangent: Is there a month for everything? When is National Italian Ice Month? I love Italian ices…) If there’s one thing I know a lot about, it’s managing, compartmentalizing, and boxing up stress. This girl works full-time, has a five-month-old baby, is working on a master’s degree, and is trying to lose ten pounds by summertime. What keeps me calm, cool, and collected? Beauty products.

Taking slow, deep breaths doesn’t do a thing for me. But, call me vain, when I swipe on my fave NARS blush in Taos, or dab my Benefit Girl Meets Pearl highlighter on my brow bones, or spritz my wrists with Miss Dior Cherie Eau de Parfum, magic happens. There’s something undeniably peaceful about taking the time—even if it is just the few seconds between diaper changes, doing crunches, and reading Chekhov stories for class—to pamper yourself. Amiright? Check out a few more feel-good beauty products after the jump and tell me in comments what makes you feel all good and giddy inside.
