Put The iPhone Down: Tiny Tweaks, Big Results

For any who received their April Women’s Health Birchbox, you know that this past month has been all about tiny tweaks, big results. In honor of that, our video intern, Charisse, is focusing on improving small things in her daily routine. She’ll be sharing the results with all of you, of course! For her final tweak, Charisse changed up her snacking habits.

Week Four: Disconnect

After making tiny tweaks to my fitness, beauty, and snacking routines, I had just one bad habit arena left to conquer: disconnecting from my phone and TV. No matter where I am, I always have my phone on me; and as far as TV goes, well let’s just say that if it’s a TV show on the air, I’m watching it. So this week, I made it a priority to put my phone down, pick up a book, and disconnect for a little while.

Week Three: Snacking Habits

Though my official title here at Birchbox is Editorial and Video Intern, my unofficial title is Queen of Snacking. As a lifelong fan of Nutella and pretzels, I love sweet and salty things. Let it be known that I also occasionally indulge in a scoop or two of ice cream—and by occasionally, I mean every night. This week, I rose to the challenge of changing my food habits by switching out the snacks and drinking more water.

Week Two: Beauty Routine

When I’m asked how long it takes me to get ready in the morning, my answer of two hours usually triggers a Liz Lemon-inspired "What the what?!" Taking a cue from these responses, I decided that this week would be the perfect time to make some tweaks to my beauty routine. Let me preface by saying that my two hour routine is something I truly enjoy. While it may seem excessive, I love having a leisurely morning without feeling rushed—but I will admit that I could use some more shut-eye. Read on to learn how I streamlined my routine!

Week One: Fitness

Lucky for me, the walk from my apartment to the Birchbox office is about one mile—a completely manageable foot commute. While I know I’m lucky I don’t have to take the subway or bus to get to work, I’d be lying if I said I happily walk the 20 minutes every day. Sometimes I’m running late, or it’s pouring down rain, or my choice of footwear is not exactly distance-appropriate. That’s when I’m guilty of hopping on the M34. But no more—I’m vowing to walk everyday. After all the New York Times says it may actually be better for me than hitting the gym!

What We’re Loving: Our Fave Country-Pop Star’s Fragrance

We don’t usually go in for the celebrity fragrance craze, but we actually think it would be lovely to smell like one pop star in particular: Taylor Swift. It’s not only her voice and lyrics that are addictive—her fragrance, Wonderstruck, is as well. It has us spritzing and singing her songs in the office. We’re excited to sample it this month—find out why all we love it.

Staffer: Ally, Operations Associate

Favorite Taylor Swift Song: Total tie between ‘Hey Stephen' and 'Dear John’. Both are classic examples of her genuine songwriting style.

Why She Loves Wonderstruck: “First, I admire any woman who writes and composes her own music. Plus, I love Wonderstruck because it makes me smell delicious and my boyfriend really likes it!”

Planning for May Flowers with Bloomin Seed Paper

This month we slipped a special treat in our April boxes: Bloomin’s letterpress seed paper. The Colorado-based company makes the highest quality seed paper on the market, which is why we were so excited to work with them. They use completely biodegradeable ink that comes in a rainbow of saturated hues, and can print just about anything. We’re especially excited about their brand-new line of letterpress wedding invitations — eco-brides, take note. And if you haven’t planted your paper already, get going!
