5 Ways to Avoid Breaking Out in the Summer

While I love summer weather, I’m not a huge fan of the heat and sweat threatening me with breakouts. Piling on the necessary amount of sunscreen and heavy makeup doesn’t exactly make my skin a happy camper. I’d rather be enjoying the sun than worrying about breakouts. That’s why I’m revamping my usual beauty routine with help from our latest video.

These 5 tips will help you avoid those pesky pimples and keep your skin happy. Summer skincare is all about keeping it light and fresh so I always look for products that will keep my skin matte. Supergoop!® SPF 30+ Everyday UV Lotion for Face and Body is a perfect sunscreen that will keep your skin protected without feeling greasy. I don’t have perfect skin so I rely on at least a little coverage in the summer. CC creams like Pur Minerals CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 40 provide enough coverage without the feel of heavy makeup. Kiss those breakouts goodbye!

A Non-Drying Acne Treatment Perfect for Breakout-Prone Summer Skin

There are a couple great upsides of my oily complexion: 1. no dry flaky skin most of the year and 2. an occasionally dewy appearance in photos. But one of the major downsides is that in extra hot and humid weather, no matter how much mattifier I wear or how many oil-absorbing sheets I have on hand, inevitably within an hour of being outside, I will be a gleaming glistening mess. And that means I can expect my fair share of breakouts coming very soon.

The one surefire way I’ve discovered to avoid seriously bad flare ups this time of year: using salicylic acid products. The latest formula that I’ve added to my regime is DDF’s acne control treatment and it’s one of the most effective that I’ve tried.

5 Tips to Help You Banish Acne This Spring

The sun is finally shining here in New York, and I’m ready to switch up both my wardrobe and beauty routine to better suit the rising temperatures. Unfortunately, this means dealing with my worst enemy—oily skin. It’s a daily battle to fight off that inevitable shine, which also means trying to prevent additional acne flare-ups. Who needs that when all I want is to be fresh-faced and bare-shouldered?

With that in mind, I came up with a few battle-tested tricks that have kept my complexion clear in warmer weather. Here are my five favorite tips for keeping breakouts at bay in the spring.

The Totally Effective (and Gentle!) Product I’m Using to Beat My Breakouts

image

My teenage years were plagued with bad acne, which meant that I tried more spot-zapping products than I can name: serums, creams, washes, prescriptions, masks—the works. Some did the trick, but either they stopped working after a couple weeks or I had to put up with red, flaky skin (which honestly, isn’t that much better than the zits in the first place).

Thankfully, acne-fighting technology has improved significantly since my teen years experimenting with too-strong salicylic acid spot treatments and retin-a creams. Now there’s a new wave of gentle, more effective formulas being featured in skincare products, and it’s convinced me to try something different to tackle grownup blemish troubles. When I found out about Evologie’s Intensive Blemish Serum, I knew I’d found something unique.

Made with natural ingredients like tea tree oil and chamomile, this lightweight serum fights breakouts deep within the skin. But the added benefit is that Evologie’s YS3 Complex ™,  its special delivery system, also protects and hydrates the outer layers of skin by upping blood flow and preventing water loss. Plus, for the sensitive types among us, it’s also alcohol and fragrance-free.

My favorite part of the serum? It makes it easy to fight zits without adding a ton of time to your routine:

After washing your face, pat dry and apply serum directly on individual blemishes. That’s it! Then follow up with your daily moisturizer or face cream once the serum has absorbed. Our editor’s tip: as with any other intense treatment, we recommend that you start out using this product once every other day and slowly increase applications to the recommended twice a day to prevent any possible irritation.

Meet pūr~lisse founder Jennifer Yen. (Photo: Peter Cervieri)

Last week on a blissfully sunny trip to L.A., I had the chance to catch up with skincare expert and pūr~lisse founder Jennifer Yen. In her former life as an actress (she played an evil sorceress on Power Rangers in its first season), Yen wore extradramatic heavy makeup on a daily basis—which stressed out her sensitive skin, in turn causing acne, hives, and rosacea. To help combat these skincare woes, Yen created pūr~lisse—an entire line of sensitive skin-friendly products that rely on two soothing, healing traditional Chinese ingredients: blue lotus and white tea.

After spending an afternoon with Yen and her seriously luminous skin, I knew I had to find out everything that she uses in her personal regimen. So without further ado, here are the top four tricks that she follows to keep her sensitive skin clear and glowing:
