There are few things that we love more than sneaking a peek into the beauty routines of our favorite people. This week, we scored an insider’s look at the gorgeous vanities of two very stylish bloggers: Elizabeth Dehn of Beauty Bets and Christina Caradona of Trop Rouge.
Not only did these two lovely ladies tell us their favorite product picks, they also shared some of their primping secrets—which we’re stealing and adding to our own routines posthaste. Read on to find out their (and soon to be your) must-haves!
Our school days are long behind us, but we still get nostalgic around this time of year. That was the impetus behind Head of the Class, our latest limited edition box, and our Back to School shop category. And with the start of classes right around the corner, we asked a real teen—Birchbox Blog star Becca Zimmerman—to clue us in to how the kids are prepping for school these days.
The week before school starts can be a little bit stressful: finishing up summer reading, buying school supplies, and, of course, making sure that you come in to classes looking and feeling amazing. Here are a couple ways I’m kickstarting my routine before the first day:
One of the most important things about first day prep is having clear, healthy skin. An exfoliator is great because it gets rid of dead skin cells and buildup on top of your skin, and makes it feel smooth and refreshed. You can use a daily exfoliator in the shower, like Yes To Grapefruit Daily Facial Scrub, or you can use a more powerful exfoliator once or twice a week. My favorite exfoliator of all time is WEI’s Pomegranate Buffing Beads, which feel kind of like sand from the beach, but make your skin so soft afterwards. If you are new to exfoliators or have sensitive skin, I suggest using a daily scrub every two or three days and then build your way up to something more powerful so that you don’t hurt or dry out your skin.
When the Birchbox Beauty Partnership team isn’t working hard to make sure your boxes are filled with awesome beauty samples, we take some time to blow off steam with a little competitive fun. Recently, we geared up with bandanas and war paint, and ventured out to Central Park for a day on the field.
Following an afternoon of relay races, kickball, and a tie-breaking water balloon fight, our grimy-feeling team members were happy they came prepared with a few necessary clean-up items. Perhaps a little predictably, everyone had hidden a pack of wipes in their bags to de-grime on-the-go. Read on to discover the products they brought along:
Earlier this year, we gave you an update on the Pencils of Promise school that we built in Pasebeyena, Guatemala. The three-classroom school has been open since December 13th, and this weekend Katia, Hayley, and I are getting the (amazing) opportunity to visit it. The phenomenal PoP team has put together a jam-packed itinerary for us, including community visits, cultural activities (Lema weaving classes!), and of course plenty of time with the school staff and students. (We’ll also be zip-lining—eek!)

We’ve already been studying our pre-departure packets, which has handy information on the local currency and slang, and grabbing SPF samples off Birchbox staffers’ desks. In addition to snacks and bathing suits, here are some of the items the three of us will be packing:
Yes To Grapefruit Brightening Facial Towelettes: Single-use wipes are to travel what sprinkles are to ice cream—that is, non-negotiable. We’re fans of Yes To’s oil-free wipes for their citrusy scent and gentle, but satisfying exfoliating effect.
This week’s guest blogger, Kalyca Romeo of Romeostyle.com, is one seriously talented lady. After graduating from the Fashion Institute for Technology eight years ago, New York-based fashion insider has worked as a buyer, a designer, and a particularly savvy personal stylist. We’re loving her tips on crafting the perfect date night outfit, rocking the latest white styles, and test-driving fall/winter makeup looks right now.
Fashion is all about going against the grain, creating new trends, and breaking old rules. One of fashion’s most staid rules—no white after labor day—no longer applies. In fact, it’s one of my favorite colors to wear well into fall and winter. Here are a few of my favorite white outfits and accessories to pair with them.
We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
Greetings from Curaçao! I’m here covering the island’s first-ever fashion week, which features the innovative work of over 20 designers from 13 countries. All shows start around 7pm every night, so I’ve been using my daytime freedom to explore this Caribbean gem’s ridiculously stunning beaches and towns. And since the country is located in the tropics, just 12° north of the Equator, it’s humid all year round (a clever local explained that Curaçao’s seasons are “hot” and “inferno”). This means that makeup should be kept to a minimum since you’ll want to spontaneously jump in the water to cool off. Save for some water-resistant mascara at night, I’ve decided to go makeup-free on this trip and focus on keeping my skin hydrated and protected from the sun.
Here’s a roundup of winning products that are keeping me looking fresh-faced and stress-free:
Health and beauty: a winning combo, no? At this morning’s Self Magazine 2012 Healthy Beauty Awards, the theme was products that make you look and feel amazing.
The event, held at the Museum of Modern Art, revealed 89 winners across the categories of face, makeup, nails, sun, hair, and body—from Top Acne Spot Solution (hello, Yes to Tomatoes Clear Skin Spot Stick) to Best Deep Conditioner (woot Ojon Super Sleek Smoothing Conditioner). The products were chosen by a panel of Self readers who tested them in their own homes and submitted their honest feedback. I recognize plenty of favorites on the list, but there are also ones I’m excited to try!
Beyond celebrating the phenomenal products, Self’s Editor-in-Chief, Lucy Danzinger, also set the tone of the event by bringing attention to social media. She told the audience of editors, industry execs, and brand bigwigs that companies shouldn’t try to strong-arm their message—they should just ensure that people are talking about their products and their brands. As a Twitter and Instagram addict, I loved hearing her give a digital call to action.

Earth Month is a great time to recommit to the environment, but I’m more in awe of companies that illustrate that year-round. One of our newest brand partners, Yes To, has been making philanthropy a priority since they launched the company in 2006. (Fun fact: in the short time since they started, they’ve become the second biggest natural beauty company in the United States.) This month, they’re launching their most ambitious campaign to date, the Yes to Hope project. It takes their Yes to Seed fund, which works to plant gardens in schools across the United States, and extends it to schools in Africa. Beyond helping feed and educate children, the initiative also pairs each African school with an American one. Watch their inspiring video to see the kids in action. I spoke to co-founder Ido Leffler about the project and what it means to him and the company.
