In the meantime, read about Weleda and their plant-tastic products.
You’d be forgiven if you associate the term ‘natural regimen’ with convention-rejecting hippies that rock their uneven complexions and lifeless hair with pride. But more and more, green is not just chic — it’s sexy. Opting into an environmentally-conscious lifestyle by no means necessitates the sacrifice of glamor or sex appeal. To meet the demand for eco-beauty, tons of brands have popped onto the radar over the past few years: Weleda, Jurlique, Dr. Hauschka, Suki, and Juice Beauty, just to name a few. These companies’ commitment to green differs (some pride themselves on their ingredients, other on their minimal packaging, and some on their kind manufacturing practices), but they’re all making investments because this is not just a passing fad, it’s a way of life.
And no surprise, some of my favorite Hollywood leading ladies — Natalie Portman, Rachel McAdams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Alicia Silverstone — are all advocates of green beauty.
As Paltrow puts it on her blog, GOOP (btw, she calls blogging “gooping” as in “I think I gooped about this before…”):
“Going green” is no longer just the ideology of left-wing hippies. Nor is it a trend. We are living in exciting times. We are confronted with the challenge of sustaining our food, our water and our environment. We are changing things. It’s big.
Some of Paltrow’s favorites brands are ones that we heart too, like Pangea Organics and Weleda.
For April’s Birchbox, we teamed up with the well-respected green chic site, Ecofabulous. Their experts helped us garner several of the environmentally-friendly goodies featured in this month’s box and founder, Zem Joaquin, even generously served as our latest Birchbox Crush. This week we’re hearing from another one of the site’s savvy blogger, Caitlin Bristol, the creative director. She’ll be sharing details on her favorite brands, her go-to oil remover, and a handy-dandy yoga guide. Up today? A behind-the-scenes look at Weleda’s super-cool biodynamic gardens.
This past summer, ecofabulous was invited to visit Weleda Naturals Biodynamic Gardens just outside of Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany. With our love of Weleda products (we’re constant fans of the Almond facial line and have been obsessed with the Pomegranate Firming Facial Line since it came out earlier this year) we jumped at the chance to visit the site where it all goes down. The garden’s 135 acres make it Europe’s largest biodynamic medicinal garden – and to think Weleda has more gardens in Switzerland, France, the U.K., the Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil and New Zealand! At that scale, witnessing first hand the cultivation of plants and herbs for Weleda’s product collection stood as witness to the company’s belief that beauty should be grown right from the earth rather than in a lab.
Top left: The hike from Schwäbisch Gmünd to the gardens; top right: Entrance to Weleda Naturals; Botom left: A field of calendula before harvest; Bottom right: calendula heads right after harvest.
I was lucky enough to witness the calendula harvest, one of the 250 medicinal plants grown at Weleda Naturals, and learned that every year the calendula is planted on a different field in order to ensure the most rich, rested soil – one of the many Biodynamic principles that the gardens use. Much of the calendula is used for Weleda’s Baby Calendula Care line because of the plant’s powerful healing and anti-inflammatory properties. A haven for birds, bees, and bugs (see the insect hotel below!), Weleda Naturals is the legacy of Dr. Rudolph Steiner, seen as the father of Biodynamic agriculture. By viewing soil as a live organism, keeping it in balance with natural resources (no chemicals or growth hormones allowed!) and taking guidance on planting, crop rotation, and harvesting from the natural rhythms of the sun, moon and planets, crops are harvested with incredible purity and potency.
What’s on the Birchbox Editors’ Desks is a series of blog posts where we share some of what we’re excited about right now through pictures of our desks. Just this week we introduced you to one of the newest additions to the Birchbox fam, Molly (not to be confused with Mollie, our Director of Content), and already she’s making a big impact in the office. We’re constantly admiring her effortlessly cool outfits from Madewell and snagging some of the awesome Birchbox swag on her desk (tattoos, what!). She’s also an avid fragrance collector and certified beauty nut so we thought we’d give you a little peek at her desk today. Enjoy!
Starbucks: I’m actually not a lover of Starbucks but there’s one right downstairs and when it’s 5:00 and you have two minutes before a meeting it’s kind of inevitable. Today they were celebrating their 40th anniversary and giving out free treats so I got a mini lemon square with my soy misto. Free food —> Starbucks just racked up a few points in my book.
- Chantecaille palette: I l-o-v-e Chantecaille and this eyeshadow palette is gorge! The powders are so silky and there’s one color in particular that I’ve already made an impressive dent in.
Tocca samples: Tocca is such a beautiful brand; I’m fanatical about their candles and I cannot wait to try out all these fragrance samples. Stella, Cleopatra, Colette, Brigitte — all my favorite ladies are present and accounted for. And the packaging is so romantic! That lavender bow may very well make its way into my hair quite soon.
Weleda Wild Rose Deoderant: Just started test-driving this stuff yesterday. I really hate the idea of using an anti-perspirant, but my past forays into natural deodorants have been less than successful. So far I am stink-free so I’m crossing my fingers that this is the one! Wish me luck.
Jo Malone English Pear & Freesia Cologne: Fragrance has such a powerful effect on my mood; this zesty floral is staying on my desk as a pick-me-up until it hits 80 degrees out. So that’ll be a while I guess…
Own Lip Therapy in True Mint: These lip treatments just came over this morning. I’ve been re-applying the mint flavor all day! It’s hydrating and plumping in a futuristic-looking roll-on tube. The minty-ness is really refreshing and it has a super tingly effect on your lips. It actually kind of burns a little, but in a totally awesome way.
Revlon Nail Polish in Siren: I absolutely can’t wait to hop on the orange-hued band-wagon this summer! I’m a big nail polish girl, and I’m also pretty darn good at doing my own nails and the nails of others (not to toot my own horn). This winter, I’ve been obsessing over a dark eggplant shade from OPI called Midnight in Moscow, but I’m just about ready for a full-throttle leap across the color wheel to this bangin’ neon orange.
Want to build your own fragrance sanctuary like Molly? Check out the options in our Birchbox shop.
Welcome to our new Guest Blogger series! As much as we love to chatter on about our respective obsession (Mollie, cookies; Meredith, brows; Lorelei, nails), a little variety is always good. From time to time we’ll hand over this space to one of our very lovely, very savvy friends. First up: Dorothy McGivney, founder of Jauntsetter.
Favorite travel beauty souvenirs?
When my mother came back from a recent trip to Switzerland, she brought home Weleda’s Skin Food, a moisturizer from Germany. It’s incredibly thick but not at all greasy, and is now my favorite moisturizer in the whole world. It’s also the best smelling beauty product I have.
