The Chop: Jennifer Lawrence’s New Haircut

Call it a short hair epidemic! Today we learned that Jennifer Lawrence (or, as you may know her, Katniss Everdeen) has joined the likes of Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Hudson with a new pixie cut… to mixed reviews. While we love her shorter ‘do she’s been catching some shade from commentators and bloggers alike. Where do you stand?

Love it or hate it, short hair can be harder to maintain than longer hair—it requires frequent trims, and a bad hair day can’t be swept into a topknot and simply forgotten. If we were J. Law we’d stock up on Number 4’s Non-Aerosol Hairspray to tame flyaways and Serge Normant’s Mega Revive Dry Shampoo for body and texture.

Recently cut off a lot of length? Get our tips for styling short hair in this video tutorial.

Jena Malone as Johanna Mason in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

We can’t take our eyes off this new eye-catching image of Jena Malone as district 7 tribute Johanna Mason in the upcoming second installment of The Hunger GamesThe images are part of a character feature on the film’s website, As HUGE fans of the books and the first film, our editorial team has been anxiously keeping our eye out for up-to-the-moment news on the November release—and this new picture didn’t disappoint.

This isn’t the first time we’ve gotten to see Jena in character but it is our first closeup look at the makeup and the cork upper portion of her dress. How ‘bout those lower lashes?! Fans of the book will remember Johanna as the tribute who strips down to her birthday suit in front of Katniss and Peeta, so you can probably expect to see a lot more of her this fall!

Are you counting down the days to Catching Fire’s release on November 22nd?

Even if you’re not feeling Johanna’s extreme eyelash look, you can still get The Hunger Games style with Katniss’ dutch braid–find the tutorial here.

Behind the Scenes at Our Halloween Makeup Tutorial Shoot: Effie Trinket

There are some serious Hunger Games nerds in the Birchbox office (like, the entire editorial team). So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we jumped at the chance to dress up like our favorite characters from the books and movie for Halloween. Even though Katniss is our girl, Effie Trinket—with her eccentric Capitol style and larger-than-life personality—is clearly the more fun choice. Click through for step-by-step directions from makeup artist Reiva Cruze on how to score the look. PLUS, send us pictures of you in your Effie costumes (and any other Hunger Games costumes) and we’ll feature them here on the blog leading up to Halloween! Email us at or tweet @birchbox.

I never would have considered paper lashes if it wasn’t for The Hunger Games movie, which showcased Effie Trinket (a.k.a. Elizabeth Bank) wearing them in tons of promo shots. I know, I totally got pulled into the whole Katniss craze!

We’re recounting moments that made us tear up or cheer from the paperback version.

Everyone remembers their experience reading The Hunger Games, primarily because no one ever really sleeps for the 36-48 hours that they’re consuming all the text. We were no different. Scenes from the book are seared into our memory, and we just had to relive them again by sharing with you. Herewith, a few of our very favorite tear-jerker, laugh-inducing, heartbreaking moments from Suzanne Collins’ first book of the series:

Reading List: Holiday Nails, DIY Hair Care, Dannijo’s New Zine, and The Hunger Games

Happy 11/11/11 and Veterans Day! Yesterday also marked two weeks until Thanksgiving so you could say we’re really starting to get in the holiday mood! Luckily we’ve got festive polishes and a new ‘zine to get us through the season. Read on.

  • We’ve always wanted to try the old “beer in the hair” trick but never got around to it. Luckily, TheGloss tested it out for us and our curiosity is sufficiently satisfied! Read about their writer’s experience before you try this yourself. [The Gloss]
  • Holiday nail polishes are here and they’re all kinds of sparkly and pretty! Here’s a roundup of the best of the season, including our favorites from Zoya. [Fashionista]
  • Uh oh! Marc Jacobs might be in trouble. British Advertising Standards Authority has banned the ad for his Oh Lola! Fragrance, featuring Dakota Fanning in the UK. The organization felt it sexualized the teenager. [FashionEtc]
  • Allure, just like us, is obsessed with The Hunger Games. They pulled together a list of all the futuristic beauty inventions from the book that they want to make a reality. We don’t blame them, can’t wait to get our hands on these! [Allure]
  • We love a great print magazine as much as the next girl so we were pleasantly surprised to read that a Birchbox Crush, the sisters behind jewelry brand Dannijo, will release a biannual zine. The newspaper-style mag will coincidentally also feature our current Birchbox Crush, Timo Weiland. []
