Top 10 Most Inspired Makeup Looks at NYFW

Usually when we’re backstage at fashion week, we gravitate towards makeup that’s exaggerated or particularly bold, and typically that means it isn’t very real-world friendly. For spring 2014, however, most of what we loved could easily be translated into a more standard day-to-day or evening out look. After much consideration, here are our top picks that we can’t wait to test out ourselves.

  1. Marchesa: Who says you have to wear light lip colors in the spring and summer? Global Artistic Director for Revlon, Gucci Westman, bent the seasonal rules (bravo!) by applying a deep purple to lips. (Photo: Courtesy of Revlon)
  2. Rag & Bone: Another great lip color and another look by Gucci Westman, the citrus pouts at Rag & Bone had every beauty expert predicting this would be the “it” hue for next year. (Photo: Courtesy of Revlon)
  3. Jason Wu: A picture may be worth a thousand words, but this image doesn’t do the eye makeup at Jason Wu justice. Diane Kendal for Lancôme achieved shimmering rose gold lids that were both romantic and dramatic. (Photo: Courtesy of Kerastase)
  4. DKNY: The matte, almost stained orange pouts really stood out at DKNY. To get this particular look, artist Charlotte Willer for Maybelline first applied a nude lipstick to act as a base and make the orange really pop. (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)
  5. Cynthia Rowley: Given that Cynthia herself likes to surf, it was no surprise that the designer’s favorite pastime found its ways into the beauty inspiration. Sarah Lucero for stila made the girls look like they had gotten some color by applying a rosy hue to cheeks and the bridge of the nose, as if they had just come in from the beach. She finished everything off with the most amazing shiny pink gloss. 6. Lela Rose: If you had told us a few weeks ago that chartreuse shadow could look cool, we would have said no way. Romy Soleimani proved us dead wrong at Lela Rose. (Photo: Courtesy of stila)
  7. Carmen Marc Valvo: Reaffirming that dewy is dead, makeup artist Uzo for Nars chose to do matte skin, which resulted in retro sixties-inspired eyes that really stood out.  (NARS)
  8. Helmut Lang: While we loved the fall-esque deep cherry lip, the flushed cheeks that Hannah Murray for Nars created at Helmut Lang were a unique highlight. Instead of using blush, Murray used a crimson lipstick and lip pencil and then blended with her fingers. (Courtesy of: Nars)
  9. Kate Spade: Barbie-meets-Sophia Loren was the vibe at Kate Spade. To achieve that effect, Neil Scibelli for Jouer created a double cat eye using contrasting white and black liner.
  10. TIBI: The bold streaks of striking white shadow by Alice Lane for Maybellne brought all the focus to the eyes at Tibi.  (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)

Top 10 Eye-Catching Manis From Spring 2014’s NYFW

The days of over-the-top nail art manis may be behind us, but plenty of designers opted for colors and designs that were memorable at the Spring 2014 shows. Here’s a look at our absolute favorites and get this: so many of these ideas are actually wearable!

  1. Ruffian: The brand is known for its signature crescent moon mani and this season, nail artist Cheryl Natoli took the look to new heights by extending the darker accent color further up the nail. What’s even cooler? She used only shades from Ruffian’s first lacquer collection, which is exclusive to Birchbox(Photo: Tom Newton)
  2. Mara Hoffman: Using Hoffman’s trademark prints as inspiration, nail artist Honey for Maybelline created bright orange flourishes that stood out nicely against the nude base color. (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)
  3. Prabal Gurung: Candy-color nails were done best for spring at Prabal Gurung, where nail artist Ana-Maria for Sally Hansen was being mindful to contrast lip and nail colors. (Photo: Courtesy of Sally Hansen)
  4. Tadashi Shoji: This opalescent matte nail created by Katie Hughes for butter London was such a stunner in large part because of its simplicity. (Photo: Courtesy of Butter)
  5. Suno: Bright orange digits like these seen at Suno (courtesy of Maybelline) are predicted to be the hottest nail color for spring 2014. (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)
  6. Tibi: If you want to have a go at nail art, but don’t have the steadiest of hands, this look created by JINsoon is right for you. We’re particularly fond of it because the black lines only appear on three fingers on each hand. (Photo: Courtesy of JINsoon)
  7. Kate Spade: Cap toe shoes were the inspiration for Deborah Lippmann's punchy color-block design at Kate Spade. (Photo: Tom Newton)
  8. Rebecca Minkoff: Since the show was inspired by Frida Kahlo, manicurist Michelle Saunders for Essie decided on a Day of the Dead design. (Photo: Courtesy of essie)
  9. Cynthia Rowley: To get these blinged out manis, nail artist Casey Herman for Essie used a mishmash of blue, black, and two different sparkly topcoats.(Photo: Courtesy of essie)
  10. Charlotte Ronson: Nail artist Shelly Burns for Color Club opted for a uniform polka dot design that’s not just adorable, it’s also easy to replicate yourself.

Get an EXCLUSIVE Tibi Empire Pouch
While our staff hails from all over the country and world, many of us consider ourselves New York City girls through and through. As such, we’re an office that loves TIbi—a brand that’s practically engineered for Manhattanites with its clean lines and emphasis on urbane sportswear.
For Pre-Fall 2013, the label designed a graphic Big Apple-inspired print for the collection. Whether you live in the city or not, there’s no denying that the design is exceptionally eye-catching—and it’s no longer just on clothes! Tibi has also designed an exclusive Empire Pouch just for Birchbox, which you can buy now for $28 or receive it complimentary with any $65+ purchase of full-size products in our Shop.
We love that the pouch is slightly on the bigger side, which means it can help us organize the larger items we’re bringing for weekends away, like hot tools or swimsuits. It’s also versatile enough to fit inside your day-to-day tote and to help keep everything in its place (we know we can always use help in that department).
The Tibi Empire Pouch is a limited edition and only available while supplies last, so act fast and get your hands on one now!

Perfectly Imperfect Makeup by Bobbi Brown at TIBI

Saturday evening at Pier 59, Bobbi Brown Lead Makeup Artist Kimberly Soane called the Tibi girl “urban and confident.” The makeup was meant to look like the models did it themselves, imperfect and slightly smudged—”almost like they’ve tried to wipe it away.” We’re loving the heavily lined lower lash line. According to Soane, the trick to pulling the look off is to line the upper lashes as well, only using a thinner line up top. “Liner on the top and bottom opens the eye. Liner on the bottom only drags the eye down.”

Also making an appearance backstage: Fashion Week manicurist extraordinaire Jin Soon Choi, using new polishes from her JINsoon line. Models wore shimmery shades of grey, green, red, and black with a matte topcoat “Matte Maker” over the top. The contrast of the shimmer and matte gave nails a dimensional, velvet appearance. According to Choi, she was inspired to shift away from her traditional high-gloss manicures by TIbi designer Amy Smilovic’s designs that combined color and utility.

1. Blue Eyeshadow

Blue shadows once only existed in our (awkward) memories of the ’90s or in the makeup kits of the very bold. But no longer. This season we caught sight of gorgeous sky blue, sapphire and marine hues swept onto eyelids at shows like Kate Spade, Monique Lhullier, Jason Wu, Tibi, and Patrick Ervell.

Packing List: Georgia

Amanda Graber, our new director of PR & strategic partnerships, just jetted off to Georgia for the weekend and we were dying to find out what she packed for a few days in the hot, humid, sticky South. From mascara to maxi dresses, here’s what she brought with her.

Tibi dress, Stella McCartney ’Sheer Stella Eau de Toilette’, Stila Glamoureyes, No-Ad sunscreen, Christine Chin sunscreen, Essie polishes, hair tie

Maxi dresses: The Georgian heat is a killer so less-is-more is definitely my moto when I’m there. I’ll be packing this Yumi Kim dress because it’s effortless and airy.

Hair ties: Alex and Isabelle are my fave, they do the trick. (Hair must be up at all times in the South.) Plus, they also look pretty.

Suncream: No-Ad suncream is my go-to when it comes to SPF on my body. I love that it’s not oily and smells amazing. For my face I use beauty guru Christine Chin  SPF 25. (Side note: She gives the best facial in NYC.)

Mascara: Stila Glamoureyes is absolutely perfect for vacation, it stays on all day and makes your eyes really pop.

Perfume: I like to alternate my scents throughout the seasons, so for summer I am wearing Stella McCartney’s ‘Sheer Stella Eau de Toilette. I adore the vintage-looking bottle it comes in because it really dresses up my vanity table.

Nail Polish: I don’t like to wear too much makeup during the summer and let my hands do the talking. I am a true Essie gal and I try to pick a new color every time I visit the salon especially in the summer when you can be more adventurous with color. I also love mixing polishes and one of my favorite combos is Sugar Daddy and Fed Up.
