How J.Lo’s Makeup Artist Created Her Signature Glow: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

One thing we’ll never get sick of is hearing how our favorite beauty products were conceived. Whether they were a product of necessity, a eureka moment, or something quite literally cooked up in the kitchen, the stories are always fascinating. In this month’s issue of Allure one of our celebrity makeup artist heroes, Scott Barnes, talks about coming up with his amazing body bronzing product, Body Bling, and working with Jennifer Lopez on the road.

"Right before I met Jennifer, I had been in Mexico for MTV. The art director decided that he wanted all the models to be tan—and this was January. I was stuck in a shitty hotel room in Mexico with a blender that I used for protein shakes. I just dumped all my brown pigments, shimmers, and moisturizers into the blender. Next thing I knew, everyone was going nuts for this ad hoc bronzing cream. It would become a product called Body Bling. This was two weeks before I met Jennifer [Lopez], and it became my secret weapon with her."

Of all the beauty ad campaigns celebrities can book, CoverGirl is one of the pinnacles. CoverGirls are an exclusive group of models and actresses, and being chosen to represent the brand is a real sign that you’ve “made it.” Now, singer Pink joins the ranks of spokeswomen that include Taylor Swift, Sofia Vergara, Ellen DeGeneres, and Dania Ramirez. Pink spoke with WWD about the ad campaign, which will launch in November:

"Joining a group of women who have always inspired me — to laugh out loud, let my guard down or play around with my beauty look — is such an honor.”

Justin Timberlake Won’t Be Making His Own Fragrance Anytime Soon: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

We might not have predicted it during his *NSYNC days, but Justin Timberlake has become one of the most versatile entertainers in the business. From regular SNL host to movie star to designer, he’s now adding the title of face of Givenchy’s Play Sport cologne to his ever-growing resume. In a recent interview with GQ UK, JT talked to the glossy about his latest collab:

"I know nothing about what it’s like to put a fragrance together. I sat with them first, and we talked more about my lifestyle, so the fragrance is an extension of that conversation more than anything."

Sadly, however, the rest of the interview revealed that we shouldn’t hold our breath for the musician to enter the fragrance game himself. (Which is too bad because “Sexy Back” really is the perfect name for a cologne.)

"I don’t think I would ever make my own—this is more comfortable for me. I don’t aspire to have my name on a fragrance.”

Should we start a letter writing campaign to change his mind?

We might be waiting a while for a Timberlake fragrance to launch but there are still excellent cologne options for any man in the Birchbox Shop.

We’ve been big (huge!) fans of Lucky for pretty much forever and our adoration certainly extends to their editor in chief, Brandon Holley. Holley’s the driving force behind the Lucky Style Collective (aka all our favorite bloggers) and the Lucky Fashion and Beauty Blogger Conference (FABB). Stylelist recently sat down with her to talk all things beauty, fashion, and magazines. We found this quote from their interview particularly interesting:

"The magazine is where the editors rule and the website is where the editors get to play but the users start to rule." —Brandon Holley

Beth Ditto, Gossip singer and the most recent MAC collaborator, is anything but reserved when it comes to her hair and makeup. She certainly isn’t afraid to experiment and get a little out of the box—a quality we love! A few weeks ago she spoke with Into The Gloss’ Emily Weiss about everything from her high school beauty aspirations to a secret trick for getting the most out of Kool-Aid hair dye. It’s potentially useful information since the dip-dyed hair trend clearly isn’t going anywhere.

"I really enjoyed the whole Southern beauty thing—I probably had big bangs for way too long because I loved doing it so much, huge bangs. Sometimes I would put Sun-In in. And then the Kool-Aid thing came along. I tell you what—I was really good at doing Kool-Aid in my hair, ‘cause other kids were actually trying to pour it in their hair when it was watered down, but I would mix it with Noxzema so it was really concentrated, and then put it on. I would Sun-In my hair first, and then I would put two packets of red Kool-Aid into a little thing of Noxzema and put that on my hair and let it dry. I got mildly made fun of, but not as much as my bandmates did."

Leighton Meester Thinks She Looks Weird With Makeup: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

You know we’re big fans of Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl, hello) and she’s almost always on top of our best of red carpet lists. So imagine our surprise to learn that the glamourous actress is actually much more at home with herself when she’s not wearing any makeup. In this month’s Lucky Magazine, Meester is refreshingly down-to-earth.
"I’ve stopped wearing makeup when I’m not working. For a while I thought I had dark circles and bad skin, and then I realized I was seeing myself that way because I didn’t recognize myself anymore without makeup. Now when I wear it, I think I look really weird!"
—Leighton Meester to Lucky Magazine

Adele Really Loves Her Spanx: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

If there’s one woman who can bring us to tears with her voice, it’s Adele. She’s got pipes and the whole world knows it. One of the reasons we love her so much is that she doesn’t fit the “cookie cutter” extra-thin body type for pop stars. While women in the public eye will probably always have to deal with comments about their body, for Adele the focus is often on her extraordinary voice and her positive body image. Still, even the ever-confident songstress will cop to wearing Spanx on one of the most important nights of the year: The Grammys. She talked to Matt Lauer about getting a little help to fit into her dress.

"I had three or four pairs of Spanx on that night! I took a couple pairs off when I sang." —Adele

Did you know that Spanx founder, Sara Blakely, created them with herself and her friends in mind? Read our exclusive interview with Blakely to learn more.

Aerin Lauder’s Life of Beauty: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

If we had to name a royal family of beauty, the Lauders would be it. Proving that fact, Estée’s grandaughter, Aerin, is set to launch a new lifestyle empire shortly. The style and image director for Estée Lauder spoke to WWD about breaking out with her own beauty, home, and accessory collections and here’s what she had to say:

“I like to joke that I’ve been in the beauty industry for 42 years and actually working for 20…My goal was to create a line that was all about modern, effortless beauty. It’s very much a lifestyle brand, which I think is very much how Estée started. It was always about lifestyle photography and an environment and a world. It’s not necessarily an age group—it’s a state of mind.” —Aerin Lauder

Eva Mendes’ Laid-back Beauty Routine: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing.

Eva Mendes can get glammed up with the best of them (have you seen her Met Ball outfit yet?) but off screen she revealed her beauty and fashion style is surprisingly laid-back. We can definitely appreciate a girl who looks just as great wearing nothing but lip balm!

“I’m actually really simple. If you catch a paparazzi shot of me, I’m never done up to go to the mall. I’m not one of those people going through LAX wearing the full outfit.”

—Eva Mendes to People Style Watch about her beauty routine.

Zoe Saldana’s Attitude Towards Plastic Surgery: Notable Quotables

Notable Quotables is a weekly series featuring a great quote. Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing. We discovered today’s quote by Zoe Saldana while browsing UsMagazine.com. The lovely actress said that she’s been told she should get breast implants and shared her feelings about plastic surgery on Lifetime’s “The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet.” We think she has a really positive view on the issue.

"As long as you’re doing it for reasons that are balanced for you [it’s okay]. It’s not even about judging what’s right or wrong. There’s nobody on this earth who can tell you that what you’re feeling is wrong. They can tell you it’s different to what they’re feeling. That said, I’m okay with people trying to do whatever it is they need to do to feel better… What doesn’t feel okay to me, what feels a little bit out of balance, is when you want to turn yourself into something else — when you want to be another person."

—Zoe Saldana on Lifetime’s The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet
