Makeup Tips for Looking Fabulous Straight off a Plane
Over the next few weeks it seems like everyone in the Birchbox office is jetting off somewhere fun. Ally is in Equador right now (lucky!), editor Candice has been working from San Francisco this weekend, and even I’m heading off to Denver in a few days for a friend’s wedding. Summer really is our favorite time to get out of the office and enjoy some sun.
Unfortunately I usually step off the plane looking like death warmed over (especially if it’s more than a few hours long flight) and I know I’m not alone. The last thing I want to do while traveling is worry about a full makeup routine, so this month we asked makeup artist Nam Vo to share a few really easy tricks for looking downright amazing when you step off the plane. Throw these products (all under TSA’s 3.4 FL OZ limit) in your carry-on and you’ll be fresher and more polished when you step off the plan than when you stepped on. Happy traveling!
Despite my best efforts to catch up on sleep each weekend, by the middle of the work week I’m usually feeling more droopy than peppy. This week I’m avoiding the dreaded, “you look tired” line from coworkers by using some of my favorite tricks to hide bags, dark circles, and less-than-glowing skin. Here are my favorite ways to fake it ‘til you make it:
Get Rid of Undereye Circles Without Concealer
I’m not giving up my concealer (more on that to come) but these handy pads feel soothing and help depuff the worst of undereye circles. They go to work in 10 minutes while I’m eating my breakfast.
How To: Fake Looking Awake
I’ve literally never seen my coworker Eric look tired so it’s a safe bet you can trust his advice in this video. In addition to explaining what eye cream is best for when, he also offers up a DIY trick that serves the same purpose as those undereye treatment masks.
We have always known that makeup artist Nam Vo is exceptionally talented, and she continues to wow us. Behold Vo’s genius work above for the cover of ELLE Vietnam. No one does eye makeup quite like she does and we especially like how she made the look extra smokey by smudging a lot of color under the eye. Gorgeous!
Go behind the scenes at our first summer beauty shoot. Makeup artist Nam Vo gave model Natalia O. three sorbet-inspired makeup looks, while photographer Ken Pao clicked away. Check out the final shots here.
We’re visual people. We work at a beauty company because we love looking at pretty things, discussing pretty things, and playing with pretty things. And no matter how much we write about our favorite products, at the end of the day, you just need to see them in action. Which is why we recently shot our very first photo editorial (whoo!).
We tapped makeup artist Nam Vo to highlight one of summer’s hottest hues, peach, and she designed an entire beauty editorial around it. We were lucky enough to also score the lovely Natalia Osikova (she is now blowing up — featured in WWD today!). The gorgeous model underwent several transformations to showcase three different looks: a glowy cheek, a sherbet lip, and scorching eyes. We couldn’t be happier with the results.
The Style Network’s Jeannie Mai on the set of her Avon shoot
Nam Vo swung through the office day and she was in rare form. She was buzzing about Jeannie Mai, the bubbly awesome host of the Style Network’s How Do I Look? Nam and Jeannie are actually friends from back in the day — they met ten years ago in San Jose, CA working at the MAC counter. Mai is also Avon’s fashion expert and was in town for a photo shoot — guess who she requested to do her makeup? Nam did all Jeannie’s looks, including the BANG-tastic look above. Can’t wait to see the finished result!
Matte lips have been showing up on the runways for the past few seasons and we’ve expressed our love for them many times — but they can also be a little intimidating. Luckily, makeup artist Nam Vo stepped in to give us some pointers. Following her instructions to prep, prime, and shade ahead of time, we’re ready to rock these all spring long!
In case you couldn’t tell by our posts earlier, today was video shoot day at Birchbox! That means arriving extra early to our studio, going through scripts, setting up the perfect camera angles, and best of all…having makeup artist Nam Vo work her magic! We thought we’d take the opportunity to show you Nam’s desk o’ makeup. This is a lot for even us to take in!
1.Notice the amazing set of Jouer cream eyeshadows near the center of the image? Color us insanely jealous - Nam actually has the entire Jouer makeup collection to use on her editorial shoots.
2.Another Birchbox favorite, the Laura Mercier Transluscent Powder mattifies our shiny foreheads so we look as polished at the end of the day as we did at 8AM. Quite a feat for a single product.
Our favorite makeup artist, the inimitable Nam Vo, stopped by this afternoon. Not only did she come bearing red velvet twinkies from Lulu Cake (unreal), but she also gave us a few impromptu makeup tips. To Meredith: “Remember, your eyebrows are sisters, not twins. Let them each have their own shape.” She also rummaged through all the various products on my desk and picked out her favorites.
Pangea Balancing Oil: When I was younger I would always look for things that were oil-free. Now that I’m a little bit older I’m all about oils. So good for your skin!
Dr. Gross All-in-One Cleanser with Toner: My roommate actually works for Dr. Gross so I get to try everything — so lucky. This is my favorite face wash because it’s gentle and makes my skin feel moisturized after.
Under eye circles might as well be flashing neon sign on your face telling everyone that you’re tired (even when you try for a full eight hours of sleep). Luckily there is a way to conceal circles, bags, and other not-so-pretty features and brighten your entire face in the process. Check out our brand-new video featuring makeup artist Nam Vo’s three-step approach.
