Phew, we made it through another week of sweltering heat (here in New York, at least) and we’re ready for the weekend! What are your big plans? We’ll be catching up on some reading, spending time with friends, and relaxing in general. Here are a few of our favorite stories from the week. Let us know in the comments how you’re spending your weekend!

Put this on your weekend to-do list: Join Birchbox in time to get a Gossip Girl box in May! If you’re already a member, don’t worry— you’re all set. Go have a bagel instead.

Here’s our fun Friday find: We just learned about Celebrityclose-up.com, a fascinating tumblr that gives an unadulterated, extra-personal look at Hollywood’s biggest stars. Everyone from Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara, to Mila Kunis, to Ashton Kutcher, are featured in photos that give an uncomfortably close look at minute facial details.
We’ve been waiting for months and one of the biggest nights of the year is almost here: the Oscars! We’ll be live tweeting and critiquing this Sunday night, so don’t forget to follow us at #bbredcarpet. And in preparation for the occasion, we wanted to do a roundup of last year’s hightlights. Tell us in the comments: what have been your favorite Oscar moments? Are you looking forward to tuning in?

The Hosts: Anne Hathaway and James Franco
Anne made a splash with her eight (yes, eight!) outfit changes, including this custom Lanvin tuxedo. As always, James was charmingly aloof and pleasant to look at. But somehow together, they just didn’t click. Here’s hoping that hosting pro Billy Crystal will bring back a little magic this year.

Yep, that’s right, it’s still summer. It’s also time to start getting excited because August Birchboxes are shipping by by early next week. Here’s what you should read while you’re waiting for the mailman to deliver that little pink box.
P.S. Did you know that Birchbox is on Pinterest? We’re still getting our feet wet but we’ll be pinning up a storm now that we’re there. Come hang out with us there too!

At last night’s Oscars there were plenty of red carpet triumphs (and blunders—I won’t get into that), but the prettiest looks of the evening were all well complimented with to-die-for hairstyles. I’ve rounded up my eight favorites of the night. Click through and scroll to the bottom to cast your vote for the best hair!

Mila Kunis: She blew me away on all fronts: her dress, her makeup, her physique. If I had a pick for overall prettiest of the evening, I would absolutely choose her—no doubt about it. I especially loved how the star’s romantic updo perfectly complimented her super-feminine Ellie Saab stunner. Bravo, Mila! Bravo!

Is it us or was last night’s show a snooze? Really, between James Franco’s dazed countenance (what on earth is he on?) and the lack of drama, we were almost wishing Kanye would show up to shake things up. As for the fashion, there were some definite wins (and fails), but all in all, it was a pretty low energy lot. Here, our completely subjective picks and pans:
Misplaced Accessories: A tie. First, there was Amy Adams, whose ’90s-style lariat necklace marred an otherwise inoffensive Starry Night-inspired dress. And then Gwyneth Paltrow, who looked positively stunning (is that what a vegan diet does for you?) and toned in a molten metallic Calvin Klein dress—except for that strange brooch anchoring her hip. Minus that, she was a major win.
Role Model: We know, we’re like Helen Mirren fan girls over here. But really, she is just an absolute stunner—and endlessly classy. We could all take a few lessons from her.
Lessons in Lace: Scarlett Johansson’s boho waves and simple makeup looked dreamy, but her eggplant Dolce & Gabbana lace dress reminded us too much of grandma’s curtains. Mila Kunis, on the other hand, was spot on in her frothy Elie Saab number. The lavender worked perfectly against her skin tone, and the peekaboo aspect of the lace kept it from being too froufrou.
Age Approps: True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld looked like a darling princess in her nude Marchesa gown, and held her own on the red carpet. We’re predicting big things from this mega-talented 14-year-old (here’s hoping she stars in the upcoming Hunger Games adaptation!).
A+ for Effort: Co-host Anne Hathaway clocked in a whopping eight costume changes — no small feat, considering the majority of the dresses were impressively form-fitting. What does it say about her choices that our favorite was her adorable tuxedo?
