A Balm Arsenal To Fight Dry Lips
So you’re stranded on a desert island, what three things do you wish you had with you? For me, that question has always been easy: water, potatoes, and lip balm. Water is obvious, potatoes are my favorite food (in any form, probably even raw), and, perhaps most important of the three, lip balm is my number one, can’t-go-without beauty must-have.I have an ever-growing collection of lip balms, which comes in handy when purses turn into black holes or I turn out empty pockets to realize my favorite balm is actually in my other jacket. Luckily, I’m not alone in my obsession.
Fellow lip product-addict and Birchox UK contributing writer Natalie Peck has compiled this list of multifunctional, super-hydrating balms you need to own in order to have a healthy pout.

Top 10 Most Inspired Makeup Looks at NYFW

Usually when we’re backstage at fashion week, we gravitate towards makeup that’s exaggerated or particularly bold, and typically that means it isn’t very real-world friendly. For spring 2014, however, most of what we loved could easily be translated into a more standard day-to-day or evening out look. After much consideration, here are our top picks that we can’t wait to test out ourselves.

  1. Marchesa: Who says you have to wear light lip colors in the spring and summer? Global Artistic Director for Revlon, Gucci Westman, bent the seasonal rules (bravo!) by applying a deep purple to lips. (Photo: Courtesy of Revlon)
  2. Rag & Bone: Another great lip color and another look by Gucci Westman, the citrus pouts at Rag & Bone had every beauty expert predicting this would be the “it” hue for next year. (Photo: Courtesy of Revlon)
  3. Jason Wu: A picture may be worth a thousand words, but this image doesn’t do the eye makeup at Jason Wu justice. Diane Kendal for Lancôme achieved shimmering rose gold lids that were both romantic and dramatic. (Photo: Courtesy of Kerastase)
  4. DKNY: The matte, almost stained orange pouts really stood out at DKNY. To get this particular look, artist Charlotte Willer for Maybelline first applied a nude lipstick to act as a base and make the orange really pop. (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)
  5. Cynthia Rowley: Given that Cynthia herself likes to surf, it was no surprise that the designer’s favorite pastime found its ways into the beauty inspiration. Sarah Lucero for stila made the girls look like they had gotten some color by applying a rosy hue to cheeks and the bridge of the nose, as if they had just come in from the beach. She finished everything off with the most amazing shiny pink gloss. 6. Lela Rose: If you had told us a few weeks ago that chartreuse shadow could look cool, we would have said no way. Romy Soleimani proved us dead wrong at Lela Rose. (Photo: Courtesy of stila)
  7. Carmen Marc Valvo: Reaffirming that dewy is dead, makeup artist Uzo for Nars chose to do matte skin, which resulted in retro sixties-inspired eyes that really stood out.  (NARS)
  8. Helmut Lang: While we loved the fall-esque deep cherry lip, the flushed cheeks that Hannah Murray for Nars created at Helmut Lang were a unique highlight. Instead of using blush, Murray used a crimson lipstick and lip pencil and then blended with her fingers. (Courtesy of: Nars)
  9. Kate Spade: Barbie-meets-Sophia Loren was the vibe at Kate Spade. To achieve that effect, Neil Scibelli for Jouer created a double cat eye using contrasting white and black liner.
  10. TIBI: The bold streaks of striking white shadow by Alice Lane for Maybellne brought all the focus to the eyes at Tibi.  (Photo: Courtesy of Maybelline)

The first secret is that the gorgeous flush on the cheeks came not from a blush but a lipliner—Maybelline ColorSensational Lip Pencil in Red #50 to be exact. It’s unexpected, but she says it melts into the cheeks so well that you end up with the most natural cheek stain ever.

The second secret is that the lip color came courtesy of two lipsticks blended together, applied, and then blotted. The dynamic duo: Color Sensational Vivids Lipstick in Electric Orange and Neon Red. So that’s what you see here: Lipliner as blush and custom-blended lipstick, both of which are both copy-able and affordable. Kind of awesome, don’t you think?

Take it from the girl who goes to bed late thanks to karaoke-lovin’ friends and wakes up early for a cute cockapoo who expects his morning walk. On the weekdays especially, I sleep in until the last possible second.

Have you ever stayed out way too late on a school (err, work) night? Get rid of those baggy eyes and colorless cheeks with these sweet makeup tips.

Start by holding chilled spoons (or cucumbers will do) over your lids for about 10 minutes to help relieve the puffiness around your eyes. Then, follow that with an eye tightening serum (though it’s a bit expensive, I use Oil of Olay Professional Pro-X Skin Tightening Serum since I don’t use it often) that contains de-puffing ingredients like agrimony. After that, massage your undereye area with your ring fingers in light downward strokes.

TIGI and Maybelline Create a Mystic Look With Hair Chains and Bold Liner at Mara Hoffman

For Mara Hoffman’s F/W ‘13 collection, TIGI lead stylist Nick Owen and Maybelline lead artist Charlotte Willer conjured up a runway full of what they called “mystic gypsies.” For the hair, Owen used TIGI Catwalk Session Series Styling Cream to create “shiny, really polished hair on the top.” Next, sections of hair from the bottom were twisted with TIGI mousse to create “a rope-like texture.” Once hair set, sections were pulled apart and a chain was added from ear to ear.

Willer used gel liner on the eye to create a modified cat eye—pulling the liner straight out from the middle of the eye. She combined concealer and Color Sensational Lipcolor in Totally Toffee for a muted beige lip.

What’s In My Makeup Bag?: Middle School Edition

Readers, allow us to introduce you to Rebecca Zimmerman, the wise-beyond-her-years daughter of Birchbox’s lawyer. We first fell in love with Becca when she sent a personalized Birchbox to our co-founder Katia earlier this year. Not only had the teen filled the box with a selection of her tried-and-true beauty faves, but she’d also decorated the box with hand-drawn leopard print. In addition to being a product whiz, she is also a great writer—which is why we asked her to make a cameo on the Birchbox Blog. Read on for her makeup bag picks.

As a teenager, it’s hard to find a makeup look that’s quick, easy, and won’t be criticized in the hallways. While it’s difficult to pick the items I use the most (the amount of makeup I wear always depends on my mood), I can tell you the products that I always keep in my bag:

Maybelline Mega Plush Mascara: An absolute must. I use this almost every day. Out of all the mascaras I have tried, this works the best for me. It volumizes and lengthens my eyelashes without clumping.

Borderline Black Lipstick for Black Friday: Guest Blogger

Nothing gets us giddy like a good wedding. Katelyn Koepke Lewis, one of our lovely freelance writers, got hitched this October and we couldn’t resist asking her to share her bridal wisdom. The former PR maven and J-school grad recently went back to her editorial roots, working as a feature writer and editor for Be U Weddings, a Chicago-based blogazine. This week, Katelyn’s sharing her newlywed advice, from bridal beauty tricks that you can use post-wedding to how to pick hostess gifts for your new in-laws.

Considering it’s Black Friday and you’re all undoubtedly scouring stores for killer deals (report back!), I thought I’d take the day’s name to heart as color inspiration—for lips! Yep, I’m going there: the vampy, brooding, almost-black lips we saw all over the fall runways. From deep wines to cherry blacks, here are my of-the-moment picks for keeping the pout chic, but not too gothic. (C’mon, you know you have to at least try this dusky, seductive lipstick craze!)
