The Coolest Beauty-Artist Collabs in History

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Not many people know this, but I’m a huge art fan. I’d probably be more star-struck meeting Marina Abramović than Meryl Streep (although it would be a close call), and one of my life goals is to own an original Keith Haring painting. With that said, I always get a little giddy when a savvy beauty brand teams up with an influential artist to produce creative packaging or an inspiring campaign. Here are five of my favorites.

Feeling out of the loop this week? Don’t fret, here’s all the news you need to know.

Rainy Day Inspirations: Bold, Colorful Eye Shadow from Marimekko

We’re pretty relieved NYFW is over (not that we don’t love it), but this cloudy and dreary day in NYC needs a little bit more color. One of the easiest ways to add some sunny energy? Scrolling through our favorite shots from last week’s extra cheery Marimekko show. Lyne Desnoyers, lead makeup artist for MAC created the makeup look, which was really “a cross between and eyeshadow and an eyeliner.” Of the bold colors, Desnoyers said, “We’re playing with bright, crisp colors, is really the name of the game and celebrating, of course, the heritage of the house.”

Ohne Titel: A Model’s Diary

This New York Fashion Week, we have a new blog contributor—and she’s as pro as they come. Model Alana Zimmer (whose resume includes regular Vogue editorials, walking in couture shows like Armani and Jean Paul Gaultier, and starring in Nicole Miller’s fall ad campaign) is taking exclusive backstage pics for us at all the shows she’s in this season. Check back each day to see NYFW from a model’s point of view!

Colorful Fringe and Fanciful Hair Pieces Backstage at Libertine

Leave it to chic British fashion label Libertine to dream up this cheeky hair style. A neon orange faux fringe was paired with contrasting magenta feathered hair pieces to transform models into walking works of art at yesterday night’s show.

First, Kérastase lead stylist Odile Gilbert prepped models’ locks with Kérastase’s Mousse Substantive to pump up the volume. Before flat ironing, stylists applied a protective coating of Ciment Thermique. Once the clip on fringe was added, each models’ hair was lightly misted with Kérastase’s Double Force hairspray to keep each strand (real and fake) in place.

MAC Cosmetics’ lead stylist Chantel Miller rounded out the look with matte, even skin and smoldering smoky eyes. The result was just as playful as Libertines’ collection of colorful prints and bold patterns.

For healthy hair all season long add Kérastase’s fortifying Elixir Ultime to your regimen.

The New Smoky Eye at Jill Stuart

What’s better than the perfectly crafted smoky eye? An updated version that uses bold, unexpected hues. This morning at Jill Stuart, lead makeup artist Diane Kendal created a new take on the old classic by using an earth-toned palette. “It’s faded hollywood glamour,” said Kendal. “We’re doing a really soft greasy eye using brown-reds.” To get the look, Kendal used a Jill Stuart brown pencil right along the lashes that was blended above and then a Kryolan grease paint blended up and around the eye. To help carry the color down throughout the face, MAC Cremeblend Blush was used only on the cheeks, and a light stain of Korres Cheek Butter in Chara Crimson was used on the lips.

Mermaids on Holiday at Monique Lhuillier

The scene backstage at Monique Lhuillier this evening was all about the life aquatic. Odile Gilbert for Kérastase matched the theme of the show by creating hair fit for a mermaid: center parted, wet-looking, and extra wavy. The just-out-of-the-water effect came from applying loads and loads of Elixir Ultime serum and the waves were achieved by using a triple-barrel iron.
