A Balm Arsenal To Fight Dry Lips
So you’re stranded on a desert island, what three things do you wish you had with you? For me, that question has always been easy: water, potatoes, and lip balm. Water is obvious, potatoes are my favorite food (in any form, probably even raw), and, perhaps most important of the three, lip balm is my number one, can’t-go-without beauty must-have.
I have an ever-growing collection of lip balms, which comes in handy when purses turn into black holes or I turn out empty pockets to realize my favorite balm is actually in my other jacket. Luckily, I’m not alone in my obsession.
Fellow lip product-addict and Birchox UK contributing writer Natalie Peck has compiled this list of multifunctional, super-hydrating balms you need to own in order to have a healthy pout.
Are you balm obsessed like we are?

As I get older, I grow more and more disappointed by the term beauty sleep. Sure, my dark circles aren’t as bad when I’m getting eight hours every night, but something about that phrase seems to imply that you’ll awaken with lustrous locks and glowing skin.
As with everything in life, when you want to get something done, you have to do it yourself. So if you really want to get real beauty sleep, you’ll have to take matters into your own hands!
We’re a tiny bit in love with Shyema Azam’s blog, Beauty and the Feast. The freelance editor and writer—who’s worked for publications like Marie Claire, Allure and Harper’s Bazaar—writes about her everyday discoveries in the food and beauty world, often accompanying her posts with envy-inducing photos. Stay tuned all week for Shyema’s insider advice! Today, she tells us the product that helps her de-stress and stay zen.
I thought it’d be fun to write a post on, you know, the four or five beauty products I carry around in my purse everyday. But when I dumped out the insides of my bag, I found 18 products that I’ve been toting around! These are my unedited findings:
1. Viviscal and 2. Brightening Formula supplements: There’s just no way for me to remember to take vitamins and supplements unless I have them on me at all times. I’ve been desperately trying to grow out my hair (I feel like it’s at an awkward length) and this helps. I swear if my skin glows, much of the credit goes to Glisodin supplements.
3. Smith’s Rosebud Salve: The famous moisturizing balm in a convenient tube.
JolieBox co-founder Mathilde Lacombe. Yes, we have a ginormous girl crush on her.
Last week, we spilled the beans about our international expansion and our acquisition of JolieBox. Today, we’re introducing you to Mathilde Lacombe, the company’s co-founder and editorial director. Mathilde began as a beauty blogger and Elle reporter before starting JolieBox with four friends. She says, “I’m a complete beauty addict! I love discovering new brands and trends and learning other girls’ beauty habits.” Hmm…we think Mathilde and her crew will fit in perfectly at the Birchbox offices. The 24-year-old editor now oversees JolieBox’s editorial and marketing teams in the UK, France, and Spain—and recently got married! We’ll be adding periodic dispatches from Mathilde and her editors soon—for now, here’s a little bit about her!
What’s better than the perfectly crafted smoky eye? An updated version that uses bold, unexpected hues. This morning at Jill Stuart, lead makeup artist Diane Kendal created a new take on the old classic by using an earth-toned palette. “It’s faded hollywood glamour,” said Kendal. “We’re doing a really soft greasy eye using brown-reds.” To get the look, Kendal used a Jill Stuart brown pencil right along the lashes that was blended above and then a Kryolan grease paint blended up and around the eye. To help carry the color down throughout the face, MAC Cremeblend Blush was used only on the cheeks, and a light stain of Korres Cheek Butter in Chara Crimson was used on the lips.
As beauty obsessives, there are few products that get us as excited as lipstick does. Pink, red, purple—we love every color of the rainbow. In honor of National Lipstick Day today (yes, it’s for real and yes, we think our fave product does deserve a full 24 hours worth of recognition), we wanted to share our favorite shades of all time. Here are our top picks:
A self-proclaimed beauty addict and over-the-top girly girl, Lara Ramos has been dedicated to living a pretty lifestyle since birth. So many of the most beloved lip balms and glosses come in a convenient tube. (I am not one for sticking my finger in a pot, and carrying around a lip brush can be a real pain.) There’s something about the slick application of color from a tube that leaves an almost glaze-like finish on lips, with extra-pigmented shine.
Here are my of-the-moment favorites for totally tubular lips. From top to bottom:
We love babies around here (who doesn’t?) and a few months ago were thrilled to find out that our Production Manager Alicia was expecting a little peanut herself. The months have certainly flown by and baby will finally be arriving next week! Alicia has her hospital bag packed and ready to go at a moment’s notice. Since she’s working from home until the big day, we asked her to send us a picture of what she’s bringing. Here’s what she’s bringing so she’s comfortable and prepared for her new baby boy:
