Kara Manos of Politics of Pretty has been obsessed with everything beauty since she was a girl—which has made her an epic resource as a grownup. We love Kara’s savvy coverage of beauty trends and news, which is why we had to find out her best tips for an everyday routine: shaving.
Just because cooler temperatures are right around the corner doesn’t mean it’s time to start avoiding a date with your razor! Here are seven top-notch tips and tricks when it comes to achieving smooth (not stubbly) skin.
- More blades can cause more pain. A five-blade razor can be precise, but be wary of this option since it can cut hair down to a subdermal layer, and if you have sensitive skin, you’re at greater risk of getting ingrown hairs and razor burn. I’ve always had a solid shave with Bic Soleil Disposables (not to mention it’s a great budget buy!).
Never shave your legs dry. Trust me, I’ve always paid the price for those quick-fixes. Shaving is a natural exfoliator and dry shaving can lead to clogging up the razor with dead skin and puts you at risk for nicks and razor burn. Ouch!
- Opt for sensitive-skin shaving cream formulas. Read the label. If alcohol or fragrance is one of the first three ingredients listed, avoid it. I discovered whish Shave Cream in my Birchbox and it completely changed my shaving routine. My legs can’t live without it!
In honor of Memorial Day Weekend, we thought it would be fun to ask some of our favorite online beauty editors and bloggers their one must-have product for the holiday. After all, it’sthe first real weekend of summer, which means we’re changing up our beauty regimens just in time for some extra-warm temperatures—let the frolicking begin! Here’s what they had to say:
Annie Tomlin, Beauty Director at Refinery 29
"I’m a big fan of does-it-all products, so I’m packing rms beauty’s Living Luminizer. It gives skin a soft, sheer shimmer and works as a highlighter on eyes, cheeks, the Cupid’s bow of the lips, and anywhere else. Easy!”
Lara Eurdolian, Founder and Blogger of Pretty Connected
"SPF, SPF, SPF! That’s my ultimate must have for Memorial Day Weekend (and everyday). Head-to-toe you can be sure I’m sporting an abundance of SPF products on and off the beach. From my makeup case to my beach bag, I’m usually carrying a combination of body sprays, foundations, moisturizers, and lip balms containing SPF. My favorite for everyday is Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50. It’s super lightweight, goes on smooth and offers great protection.”
We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Spring is finally here! Time for picnics, pastels and lots of gingham. In addition to sprucing up my lip looks this season, I’ll also be reaching for lightweight products that allow my skin to breath in heat. And with Earth Month right around the corner, clean and natural beautifiers are on my radar, too. Here are five current favorites.
1. Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter ($38): I seriously can’t talk about this cream without getting giddy. After showering and drying off, I immediately lather this heavenly-scented, air-whipped butter all over my body. Free of parabens glycols and silicones, this is pretty much a one-way ticket to Hydration Nation.
Anyone who reads this blog knows two things: We’re just as crazy about wellness as we are about beauty. In addition to being regulars at our local gyms (hello Equinox) and curious juicers, we’re devoted to Women’s Health. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be teaming up with the magazine for our April Birchbox! All of our monthly subscribers will receive a box curated by the mag’s (totally toned) editorial team, and trust us when we say that the lineup—which includes brands like Kiehl’s, Simple, Supergoop, and Ojon—is in great shape. (That’s a fitness joke, get it?)
Not so much into working out? Fear not. The theme is “tiny tweaks, big results,” which means we’ll be talking about all the ways you can improve your overall wellbeing.
Best of all, anyone who is a current subscriber or signs up for the April box will receive an offer for one full year of Women’s Health—for free.

Dry Winter Skin Cured at the Kiehl’s + Birchbox Event
We’ve learned the hard way that even if we invest in a fancy humidifier and drink tons of water, when it comes to dry scaly winter skin the real game changers are a good moisturizer and a kickbutt serum. We know your seasonal complexion woes, which is why we teamed up with Kiehl’s on Tuesday night to host a New Year refresher event at their posh Upper East Side boutique.
From healthy skin consultations to hand massages, the space was packed with women who looked far more glowy on the way out than they did on the way in. Attendees received treatments with some of our favorite products like the Creme de Corps and the Acai Damage-Repairing Serum.
And products weren’t the only thing getting a test drive. In honor of this January’s theme #mybestyear, we invited BluePrint Cleanse to set up a juice bar for ultrahealthy taste testing. (Officially, we can’t decide if we love the Pineapple Apple Mint or the Cashew Vanilla Cinnamon Agave flavor more.)
For a limited time, get two Kiehl’s samples with the purchase of any full-size Kiehl’s product from the Women’s Shop. Just enter code ‘KiehlsSWP’ at checkout.
We’re always talking about the staffers in the Birchbox office, but the ones who you interact with everyday are the ladies of our hard-working Ops team. These fabulous femmes handle all of your customer service woes. We wanted to give you a chance to get to know them even better—so here’s a peek at who’s on the other side of the phone.
We know it’s no easy feat to check each person off your holiday gift list, which is why we wanted to make gifting easier and even more awesome by amping up our gift subscriptions. This season, when you place a gift subscription order (for both men and women), you can add any of these best-selling products to your order so they arrive with the first gift box. The best part? You can add up to five of the items listed below—and they’ll all arrive with your giftee’s first shipment.
Antsy for your latest Birchbox? Here’s how to nab another deluxe beauty sample while you wait. (Photo: littleshopofnailpolishhorrors.blogpost.com)
As you all know, your December Birchboxes have begun shipping (hooray!). Since we know how much you all love finding out about the latest and greatest products, we had to share Kiehl’s latest promotion—especially since they’re giving you the chance to snag an awesome sample before your box arrives. We’re big fans of the brand here in the Birchbox office. From their cult-y Creme de Corps to their super-effective vitamin C-enriched Clearly Corrective Dark Spot Solution, the luxe formulas are the perfect gifts or—let’s be honest—any-time-of-year treats for yourself.
From now until the end of the month, when you spend $75 or more at a Kiehl’s brick-and-mortar shop, you can score $20 in Kiehl’s Cash. Plus, if you show a store rep this blog post you’ll also receive a deluxe sample of your choice.
Don’t have a Kiehl’s store near you? While you won’t be able to grab a deluxe sample, you can still get $20 of Kiehl’s Cash when you spend more than $75 online. Simply use the promotional code “JOYFUL” at checkout.
Our latest Kiehl’s discovery? Their gel-like Rosa Artica eye cream, which has a refreshing gel-like consistency and de-puffing effects. Find out how it works in our video.
Nothing gets us giddy like a good wedding. Katelyn Koepke Lewis, one of our lovely freelance writers, got hitched this October and we couldn’t resist asking her to share her bridal wisdom. The former PR maven and J-school grad recently went back to her editorial roots, working as a feature writer and editor for Be U Weddings, a Chicago-based blogazine. This week, Katelyn’s sharing her newlywed advice, from bridal beauty tricks that you can use post-wedding to how to pick hostess gifts for your new in-laws.
While I can barely believe Thanksgiving is tomorrow (where did 2012 go?), I’m poised and ready for pumpkin cream cheese cupcakes, a tryptophan-induced nap, and lots of belly laughs courtesy of my new nieces and nephews. It’s also time to stockpile that often uninspired token of appreciation: the hostess gift. This year, I’m nixing the tried-and-true candle staple (although I could “ooh” and “ahh” over Diptyque’s all day) for something a bit more memorable. Here’s what’s on my gifting list this year:
We know you don’t have oodles of time to browse through everything in the Birchbox blog and magazine each week. Here’s a short list of the top blog posts, articles, videos, and news that we don’t want you to miss out on. Read them while you’re cozied up on your couch or in between activities this weekend.
After a long, tough week, we’re ready to follow Editor Candice’s lead and start using eye cream early.
- How You Can Help The Sandy Recovery: Power was restored to much of Manhattan late this afternoon (hallelujah!) but there are many, many folks still in need. Find out how you can help this weekend with your time or money.
- Celebrity Favorite Beauty Products: We have to admit we’re suckers for celebrity endorsements. Gwyneth loves that lip balm? Sold! But these beauty products aren’t just celebrity favorites—we’ve tested them all and can confirm they hold up to their reputations.
- Product Snapshot: Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Eye: Even though editor Candice is still in her twenties, she’s already using an eye cream. Find out why she’s crazy about this one. Hint: long weeks = under-eye circles galore.
- Ingredient Decoder: Green Tea: We’re fans of the antioxidant-rich beverage (who isn’t?) but this article from the guys at Birchbox Man has made us a believer in the leafy green’s ability to transform our skin as well.
- New York City Marathon Cancelled: Amidst fierce criticism over poor timing during the continuing aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the New York Marathon has been cancelled. What do you think—should they have gone through with it?
To say thank you for your patience we’d like you to enjoy 35 Bonus Birchbox Points on purchases of $35+ when you shop October box products. Use code THANKYOU at checkout to redeem. Promo expires 11/4/12.
