Sneak Peek: Birchbox December 2012
December 2012’s Birchbox theme is “All Wrapped Up.” In the spirit of the season, we’ve designed a Birchbox that looks even more like a present than usual! It’s packed full of products that we’d love to give and get this month. From a customer favorite fragrance by Juicy Couture to a non-sticky lipgloss by ModelCo (with a mirror right on the tube!), these are just a few of the samples we’re sending out in December.

What do you get when you pair a vegan, environmentally-minded actress with an awesomely, efficacious organic beauty brand? The recent collection of ladylike products from Alicia Silverstone for Juice Beauty.
The actress, once known primarily as the ditzy blond, Cher Horowitz, from Clueless, is best known today for her commitment to veganism and environmental activism. Juice Beauty is known for their dedication to truly organic products that don’t sacrifice quality for marketing or cost. In other words it’s a match made in heaven.
Last month, we ask our Birchbloggers to send us their blog posts about why they care about organic beauty for the chance to win an interview with the CEO of Juice Beauty, Karen Behnke. There were lots of great submissions but we were especially impressed by The Bee’s Knees Blog. Today we’re excited to publish their interview. Enjoy!
The Bee’s Knees: How did you decide to use and develop organic beauty products?
Karen Behnke: Health, wellness, and fitness have always been my passion and turned into my career once I built one of the first corporate wellness companies in the country. But once I became pregnant with my first child (at the age of 40), I really started reading ingredient labels for the first time. I was shocked that many terrible ingredients that had been banned from our food were still in our beauty products. Given that the skin is the largest organ of your body and it absorbs almost 65 percent of what you put on it, realizing the benefits of organic beauty ingredients was a natural progression.
In the spirit of Earth Month, we asked you why natural and organic beauty products are important to you. We received some passionate answers—your awareness is extremely impressive! It was difficult to choose just one but we finally narrowed it down. Read our winning blogger’s entry below and find out how you can win an organic skincare set from Juice Beauty!
Blog: The Bee’s Knees
"I like to think of our bodies as a sponge. We see a perfect example of this in the way our skin absorbs lotion over a period of a few minutes. We are essentially ‘feeding’ our skin. Let’s make a commitment to feed it well with natural products that are actually filled with GOOD ingredients, like fruits & veggies!" Read more on The Bee’s Knees…
Melissa from The Bee’s Knees has won a consultation with Juice Beauty to pick a personalized product just for her and the opportunity to interview the CEO of Juice Beauty for the Bee’s Knees!

All April, Birchbox is paying special attention to products inspired by nature. One of our favorite earth—friendly brands is Juice Beauty, which specializes in high efficacy, authentically organic beauty products.
In fact, we’re such big fans of the brand, we’ve teamed up with Juice Beauty to give you the chance to win a special three-part prize:
We’re not going to lie: pumpkin pie and warm apple cider are the main reasons we look forward to fall. But when temps plunge and feasts begin, it’s easy to forget that our skincare routine needs an update. Don’t fall behind the seasons! Just follow these easy breezy steps:
1. Swap your lightweight cream for a heavy-duty moisturizer. Fall’s brisk winds can seriously dry out your skin. Look for a product that can pull its weight and deliver a daily dose of hydration, like Caudalie Premier Cru The Cream, Jurlique Purely Age-Defying Firm and Lift Cream, and Pomega5 Healing Cream.
2. Gentle is the way to go when it comes to exfoliation. Instead of stripping your skin’s natural protective barrier with harsh scrubs, try a fruit-acid based peel. We’re huge fans of Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel.
3. Schedule a facial. Seasonal shifts leave your skin more vulnerable to freak outs, so head to your favorite spa pronto. Don’t want to splurge? Get your friends together instead for a home spa party. Start off by applying a mask like June Jacobs Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque, then sit back and catch up on the latest gossip.
4. Don’t ditch the SPF. The sun shines year round, which means you always need to apply sunscreen before heading outside. We rely on Kiehl’s Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+. Layer it under your makeup every morning.
With a few changes in your routine, you’ll be all set to brave the chilly weather.

I was at a Juice Beauty media lunch the other day, and in addition to gossiping about recent online scandals, I also got a real-time reminder that Juice’s products really, really work. It sounds like the tagline of an informercial but Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel Full Strength does give an instant boost to your skin, without any gimmicks. Unlike many so-called natural lines, Juice Beauty uses an organic juice solution as their base instead of water. This brings the organic content in their products up to a whopping 98 percent, unlike many brands which have organic content hovering around 5 percent.
Now back to that extra brightening peel. It uses an hydroxy acid complex of organic apple, lemon, grape juices, raw cane sugar and white willow bark to brighten and exfoliate so by the time you rinse off your mask (after 10-15 minutes) you’ll see a noticeable difference. Natural products tend to have a reputation for being less effective but you’ll feel these enzymes going to work as soon as you put the peel on your skin. It’s normal for your skin to feel a bit tingly and look a bit pink, but if it’s uncomfortable they also have a version for sensitive skin. Have you used this peel?

We’re always looking for good sartorial inspiration, which is why we regularly turn to PR exec Jaimen Sfetko’s Tumblr, Jaimen Lee. Documenting her own stellar (and quirky cool) style, Sfetko gives us a daily dose of outfit envy — and has us wishing she did costume changes throughout the day. Naturally, we’re curious about the savvy New Yorker’s product picks, too. This week, Sfetko is guest blogging about her beauty musts, starting with what’s in her super-chic bathroom cabinets.
Maybe it’s just me, but on a lazy rainy day or day off from work, I’m left feeling like I need to be doing something. Working in PR here in New York, I’m used to a pretty consistent level of insanity, which makes taking time off to relax hard to do. Lately during my downtime, I’ve been creating to-do lists that include treatments or activities that nurture my body and mind. From manicures to a good Wii Just Dance session (might I recommend “Toxic” or “S.O.S”), there’s a number of things you can do for yourself to refresh and renew. To keep things relevant, since Birchbox is all about beauty, here’s are some of my favorite product indulgences that are guaranteed to put a bounce in your step and smile on your face:
- Scrub: So much grime accumulates over time on your face and nothing short of a really good scrub cleanser can get rid of it. Those apricot scrubs, however, are not the route to go, as they actually can put little cuts into your skin. You want something a bit more gentle instead and trust me, the result will be worth it.
- Mask: This is something we’ve done since our first middle school sleepovers, but it often gets put on the wayside come professional life and busy work days. Masks can completely rejuvenate your skin and help to moisturize and brighten. To really clean and clear, I adore masks from Mario Badescu and June Jacobs.
- Peel: When a scrub and mask just aren’t enough, you need something more effective to erase the fine lines and lackluster skin that’s built up over time. I received Juice Beauty’s Green Apple Peel from my sister (an editorial makeup artist) last Christmas after she raved about the results she’d seen firsthand on models at her shoots. The mask is amazing yet gentle and I’d recommend it to anyone looking to undo a bit of damage from age, sun, and all the bad stuff we put into our mouths!
Once you’re done prepping your skin, spoil it some more with a luxurious philosophy hope in a jar moisturizer.

We love Birchbox moms more than anything. They send us baked goods, give us profound words of encouragement, and they keep their vanities well-stocked with goodies from our Shop. One such mom that almost single-handedly keeps us in business is Sally, mom of our lead brand relationship manager, Alta (or as I call her, Altista). Sally’s bathroom counter is proof of her continued support, which of course means the world to us. We love this photo and just for kicks, we’ve listed out everything pictured above. Thanks so much for your purchases, Sally. Keep ‘em coming!
Opa! Katia’s wedding in Greece last summer.
Once you hit a certain age, summers cease to be about barbeques and pool parties and instead turn into an endless string of weddings. It seems like every week, at least one person on the Birchbox team is headed off to a weekend wedding. Beach weddings, urban weddings, Vineyard weddings — no matter what kind of wedding, you’ll want your skin looking extra great (after all, there are all those photo ops!).
Here’s my foolproof plan to getting a glowing complexion by the day of the event.
Two weeks before: Deep pore cleansing facial — if you’re in NYC go to Mario Badescu. Make sure you stick to your skincare regimen for the next two weeks religiously.
One week before: Give yourself an at-home peel — I like Juice’s Green Apple Peel.
Three days before: At night, exfoliate skin and apply a self tanner like Dr. Dennis Gross’s Glow Pad to face and decollete (bonus - it has built in exfoliators!). Use eye cream religiously for next three days and nights, and drink lots of water.
Night before: Exfoliate and re-Glow Pad. Make sure to drink tons of water and eat a low sodium dinner. Use a a great moisturizer before you go to bed - face and body!
Day of: Again, keep up with the water and low sodium diet! Make sure to moisturize (even if it’s hot!) to avoid dull looking skin. If it’s an outdoor wedding, don’t forget your sunscreen. Nobody wants to be burnt in those pictures!
