As we ramp up our makeup game for the holiday party season, we’re faced with a nagging question—to sparkle or to shine? Look-at-me glitter or sophisticated glimmer? Since we hate to make you choose sides, we’ve got the deets on both. You’ll just have to decide on the winner for yourself.
A Thanksgiving-Worthy Makeup Look in Ten Minutes or Less
If we know our members (and we think we do), you’re probably feeling a teensy bit stressed about tomorrow’s big holiday, especially if you’re hosting. Lest you think that we’ve left you in the lurch in the looking cute department, we’re sharing this holiday-ready makeup look from our Editorial Director Mollie, and InStyle’s Beauty Director Kahlana Barfield.
A sheer bronze eye is just the right amount of shine, and we swear you can do this look in between basting the turkey (or, in my case, tofurkey) and setting the table. Let us know how it goes and have a fabulous Thanksgiving!
A few weeks ago we released the results of our latest Beauty Pulse Survey—a series of questions about beauty and the holidays that we posed to over 3,000 of our members. We were particularly surprised to see the varying lip colors that women in different regions of the US prefer to wear during this season of parties and revelry.
Red was the big winner this year with three out of four regions choosing that as their favorite, while the Midwest prefers a nude shade. Based on these findings, we wanted to make it a little bit easier for you—based on your region, or just based on your taste—to find the color that you’re after. Here are our picks:
This past weekend, I had a trio of holiday parties to attend. Fun, I know, but also stressful! Every time I go to get dressed up for an event, I pull out one of my many eyeshadow palettes…and I freeze. Despite having been on a million video and photo shoots with pro artists, I can never recreate the beautiful, effortlessly blended looks they do on me. More often than not, I take the easy route and go for a neutral taupe shadow and loads of black liner.
But it’s high time I pulled out my big girl blending brushes and tried something a bit more fun. I asked Reiva Cruze, one of our favorite makeup artists, to give me a simple look I can wear to all my holiday parties. Here’s an easy to follow step-by-step:
It happens all the time. You put on your makeup and it looks awesome, only to have it fade away a few hours later. Watch our five tips to make your makeup truly last all night long and here are some products that can help:

Old Spice just released their new holiday wish list campaign featuring Isaiah Mustafa as “Manta Claus.” The campaign is hilarious and a good reminder of last year’s Sesame Street parody commercial starring Grover. We could watch them both for hours. [Glamour]

One of the best parts of my job is getting to attend press events. Last night, I ventured down to Soho’s SpaceNK Apothecary to preview the new collection from By Terry, a chic French brand that’s been gaining legions of fans in this country, including the entire Birchbox office. By Terry is best known for their Baume de Rose, a healing lip treatment that enjoys cult classic status. Now they’re launching the Terrybly line (gotta love the wordplay), which features products made with luxe ingredients like skin-plumping hyaluronic acid and crushed pearls. No cutting corners there.
Between sips of champagne, I had the chance to sit down with By Terry makeup artist Brian Bracero, who also happens to be the brand’s U.S. national trainer (translation: he’s in charge of teaching fledgling makeup artists everything they need to know). Bracero shared some awesome pro tips and tricks with me. Click through to learn what he said!
