5 Whiff-Worthy Natural Hair Products to Treat Your Nose To

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Remember that amazing old school rose-scented shampoo by Herbal Essences that we were reminiscing about in this post? It still exists! Those who left a comment noting that the scent is now in the color protection formula were absolutely right. It’s the Color Me Happy product and you can buy it here. Thanks again, guys! Our next step is to persuade the brand to turn it into a body spray.

And speaking of heavenly scents, I’m curious to know how many of you purchase shampoos and conditioners simply because they smell good versus how good they are for your hair. For instance, I love, love, love Herbal’s scents, but I rarely use their products since they contain some not-so-good-for-your-hair ingredients like methylchloroisothiazolinone (try saying that word ten times fast). However, it doesn’t stop me from purchasing it simply for smelling purposes.

6 LOL Beauty Products From the ’90s

Since Birchbox is always on the cutting edge of beauty, I thought it would be fun (and funny) to switch it up and go back, way back, to salute some of the beauty products that we’re all guilty of experimenting with during the Saved by the Bell era.

I may be dating myself here, but these products were absolutely essential to my tween and teen days in the ’90s. Here are my personal (yes, cringe-worthy) memories with each; drop me a line in the comments if you have a story, too!

Herbal Essences in Rose Hips: Ah…I can still smell the magical fragrance of this conditioner and shampoo. I remember when Herbal Essences were all the rage and that “Yes! Yes! Yes!” commercial would play before TGIF on ABC (talk about a throwback). I was so sad to learn that this scent was discontinued a few years later—and it looks like I’m not alone, because the product is going for a pretty penny on eBay right now.

Bonne Bell Lip Smackers: Okay, who doesn’t remember these? The watermelon, raspberry, and Dr. Pepper-flavored Lip Smackers were my absolute jam. I remember slathering this on when I was around my crush in school, convinced that the scent of my soda-flavored lips would surely reel him in. As if!

Reading List: Bang Epidemic, Tanning Tights, Celebrity Spokeswomen, Ballet Polish & Scary Publicists

Happy New York Fashion Week! We’re almost too busy running in and out of the office all week for us to read anything but that doesn’t mean you should miss out. Take a look at what we’ll be catching up on in between shows. Don’t forget to follow all our Fashion Week posts this weekend.

  • Liv Tyler and Rachel McAdams are both rocking bangs now in addition to Jessica Biel and Reese Witherspoon, who debuted fringes of their own last week. It’s a bang-epidemic! [Style.com]
  • There are now tights that will give you a fake tan while you wear them. These tights have patented microfiber tech that slowly adds tan to your legs while you’re wearing them. Despite their strange concept, we’re tempted to actually give them a try this winter. [DailyMail]
  • Nicole Scherzinger is the new face of Herbal Essences. She has beautiful hair, so that makes perfect sense. [People Style Watch]
  • OPI’s new polish line, OPI for the New York City Ballet is out. Unsurprisingly, all five shades are sweet pastels, with pale pinks, lilacs, and one silver glitter. [She Finds]
  • The NY Times profiled famous and slightly terrifying publicist Pierre Rougier, founder of PR Consulting. He’s respected and feared within the fashion industry for his bluntness, fierce protectiveness of clients, and temper. [NYTimes]
