The Exotic New Skincare Ingredient That I’m Loving

image

My™’s debut skincare collection took centerstage at Henri Bendel’s.

A few weekends ago, I ventured from my humble Brooklyn abode to Henri Bendel’s Upper Eastside outpost. Leaving my beloved borough during the weekend, generally takes a lot of cajoling but when I heard one of my fave brands, My Skincare, was hosting an eye-opening trunk show I was there in a New York minute.

I fell in love with My™’s nourishing line after a particularly awful skin freak-out made my complexion a totally-not-cute scaly texture. Fortunately, the California-based brand’s vegan, gluten- and synthetic-free skin essentials miraculously quelled the dryness without causing further irritation. I’ve been a major fan girl every since.

Manning the tropical-inspired display, My™’s gorgeous founder Tessa Yutadco gave me the lowdown on the rare ingredient that makes her skin saviors so unique: pili oil.

Makeup On The Go: Guest Blogger

Girl Around Town co-founders, Leigh Evans and Mary Cunningham, created an online community for women to talk about the latest in fashion, beauty, food, and more. The site boasts jet-setting writers who are based in Los Angeles, Houston, and New York, all of whom have the insider deets on the hottest things to do and see all over the globe.

I’m pretty diligent about my makeup application in the mornings. But no matter how much time I spend first thing, by mid-day I look like a sad circus clown: I’ll have mascara rings underneath my eyes, my lipstick will be smeared, my cheeks will be pale, and the list goes on. So, I have learned to be prepared for the mid-day makeup battle by carrying a couple essentials with me at all times. Here’s what’s I regularly tote around with me:

When I saw the shimmery, sexy eyes at Alexander Wang’s spring 2012 show, I knew I had to find a way to recreate the look myself. Five Questions For…Vincent Longo, Makeup Artist

Photo: Bellasugar

The first thing you notice about Vincent Longo is his meticulous personal style. This afternoon, the makeup artist and founder of Vincent Longo Cosmetics met me at The Palm Court restaurant inside The Plaza dressed in a crease-free suit, skinny tie, and purple button-down. This is clearly a man who pays attention to detail, and it shows in his cult line: bold shadows, faultless foundations, and model-gorgeous lip stains. Born in Australia to Italian parents, Longo moved to the Riviera as a teenager, where he worked as a baker in his family’s store before finding his calling in beauty. He’s done makeup for everyone from Gwyneth Paltrow to Hillary Clinton! These days, Longo is busy relaunching his line with a blend of classic and new products (all in innovative, good-for-your-skin formulas). He took a break from his trunk show at Henri Bendel to chat with me about his work and to share some insider tips.

Dear Birchbox: In Need of a New Makeup Bag

Dear Birchbox,

In the spirit of the new year, I tossed my grungy cosmetics bag. Now I need a new one (the ziplock bag I’m currently using is a little too bag lady chic). I need something for travel and something for everyday, and I’d love to for it to be easy to clean. What are your favorites?

Love,

Heather B.

Hi Heather!

For affordability and generally cheeriness, you can’t beat Sonia Kashuk for Target. Every season she rolls out a new collection of fun prints, from cheetah to island-inspired blossoms. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but I like the valet style (pictured above) because the detachable interior clear case is perfect for bringing on flights.

Trust Paris-based fashion line Paul & Joe to make bags that are both stylish and practical. We love this two-piece set because you can keep your main makeup in the large compartment and carry the smaller bag with you during the day. The sweet print has a vintage chic feel — we could see French siren Marion Cotillard tucking her lipstick in it.

Henri Bendel carries a selection of whimsical bags that are compact and relatively affordable. The plastic-coated nylon is easy to clean, and the semi-stiff material keeps makeup protected from the various pokey, sharp things in your purse.

And, for something a little different, we spied this simple zippered pouch at Bird, the ever-hip boutique and online shop. It’s made from vintage Japanese ikat fabric and is just big enough for your compact, Stila Lip Glaze, NARS Multiple, and Benefit BADgal. You know, the essentials.
