3 Chic (and Easy!) Halloween Costume Ideas

Halloween is—gasp!—not really our favorite holiday. We have a hard enough time getting dressed in the morning let alone planning out an elaborate costume. But the main issue is that we never feel all that sophisticated on October 31. It’s tricky to come up with an idea that isn’t cliche (sorry, Audrey) and is also legitimately chic. This year, however, we’ve actually planned ahead and come up with not just one, not just two, but three festive Halloween options that are truly stylish!

Do you have your outfit picked out yet?

We have fun Halloween manicure ideas, too!

Halloween Nail Art Ideas For Every Skill Level

Almost more than any other holiday, Halloween really lends itself to innovative, totally inspired nail art. Even if you’re not normally a nail art fan, if you’re dressing up in a costume, this is the perfect opportunity to go all out and get into the nitty-gritty details like your nails—mummy bandages, meet mummy fingertips. There’s lots of great inspiration out there (just check out our Pinterest Halloween board), but we wanted to give you lacquer ideas for every skill level: easy, medium, and hard. Click through to see our tutorials on the bloody fingerprint mani, the black widow mani, and the mummified mani!

Are you painting your nails with an eye-catching design for Halloween?

Also, if you’re still on the lookout for a Halloween costume, be sure to check out these three chic ensembles.

It’s almost Halloween and we couldn’t be more excited. What’s not to love? Sweet treats and an excuse to wear wild and crazy makeup and hairstyles—this holiday is so up our alley.

In honor of the upcoming spookfest, we’re hosting a costume contest where you could win a $250 gift certificate to the Birchbox Shop! Enter by sharing a photo of a costume you’re particularly proud of (past or present) or by voting for a friend’s photo. Click here to enter: http://birch.ly/Ri8rl8.

We’ve seen some great photos of creative getups so far, but we want even more pictures from our Birchbloggers. We know you have awesome costume, hair, or makeup tutorials that you’ve created in honor of Halloween. Share them with us and we’ll pick our favorites to feature on the Birchbox blog! Plus, we’ll post all of the submissions to our Halloween Hair and Makeup Pinterest board.

Blood Splatter Nail Art: Mani Monday

As much as we love nail art, we’re better at admiring designs than coming up with them ourselves. That’s why we’ve enlisted Anna Norman, the smarty pants behind Glitter, She Wrote, to be a regular contributor. Every Monday, she’ll be sharing her latest lacquer inspiration—you won’t be satisfied with plain ol’ polish again.

Halloween is less than two weeks away. Have you planned your manicure for the big night yet? If you have a bottle of red polish, an ordinary plastic straw, and 10 minutes, you can pull off these super simple bloody nails—no nail art experience necessary. They’re the perfect addition to a creepy costume, or a stand-alone way to bring some spirit to the 31st, whether you’re decked out in a costume or not. Here’s how to get the look:

Not the thrifting type? We came up with three unique and utterly chic Halloween costumes inspired by some of our favorite movie characters!

7 Halloween Movies We’re Rewatching This Month

Clockwise from left: Gizmo the Mogwai; The Sanderson Sisters; our fave friendly ghost; the Peanuts gang searching for an elusive figure.

With just two weeks left to go before Halloween, it’s time to get serious about costumes and makeup. Just as crucial to our holiday fun: our favorite Halloween-inspired movies! For the next two weeks, we’ll be curling up with a bowl of candy corn, some apple cider, and large pillows that can withstand terrified clutches as we watch these seven flicks. A few of them are genuinely scary, a few are hilarious, and a few are totally nostalgia-inducing childhood faves that we’ll never get enough of. Click through to find out which films made our list!

Behind the Scenes at Our Halloween Makeup Tutorial Shoot: Effie Trinket

There are some serious Hunger Games nerds in the Birchbox office (like, the entire editorial team). So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we jumped at the chance to dress up like our favorite characters from the books and movie for Halloween. Even though Katniss is our girl, Effie Trinket—with her eccentric Capitol style and larger-than-life personality—is clearly the more fun choice. Click through for step-by-step directions from makeup artist Reiva Cruze on how to score the look. PLUS, send us pictures of you in your Effie costumes (and any other Hunger Games costumes) and we’ll feature them here on the blog leading up to Halloween! Bumble and Bumble’s heritage salon in NYC got a revamp—the first since a fire damaged the space in the 1990s. (photo: WWD)
  • The final season of Gossip Girl premiered this week. In anticipation of saying goodbye to everyone’s favorite Upper East Siders, Fashionista put together a slideshow of the show’s greatest looks. Headbands will never be the same. [Fashionista
  • We fell in love with that amazing Chanel hula hoop handbag from the recent Paris show, and apparently Anderson Cooper is a fan as well. When fashion darling Alexa Chung appeared on his show this week he surprised her with her own custom version, complete with AC initials. [Refinery29]
  • The 56th St. Bumble and Bumble salon has just received a major facelift. It now has a consultation bar with iPads, and shampoo station stocked with a library of literature and imagery. We can wait to make our appointment. [WWD]
  • In sad media news, at least 60 people were laid off across Conde Nast today. Self and Brides were apparently particularly hard hit. [NYMag]

5 Adaptable Hair Ideas for your Halloween Spookfest: Hairistocracy

We’re guilty of sticking with the same hair cut for years — if it’s not broke, why fix it? — but that can be a little boring. But not everyone has our issue. Paulina, one of our amazing operations associates, is always eyeing new cuts and styles. She’ll be sharing her tress inspiration and tips every other week.

October has officially arrived, and I’ve been feeling the pressure to find the perfect costume for Halloween. Yes, I know it’s still weeks away, but it’s never too early to tackle the dress-up dilemma! I’ve always been envious of my friends and family who take Halloween to the next level, and this year I’ve realized that the right hairdo can really elevate your costume.

I’ve put together a list of creative ways to work your mane into your chosen identity for the evening. The greatest thing about these options is that they’re versatile: their base idea could apply to almost any costume, and you can keep them simple or take them up a notch (depending on the length of your hair and how much time you want to spend).

No matter what you have planned—whether it’s a round of parties, doorbell duty, or taking your little ones out for a night of trick-or-treating—here are a few ideas to get your locks in the spirit!
