How to Score Salon-Quality Hair Color at Home

While we’d love to switch up our hair colors as often as Lady Gagathe hefty price tag of a salon visit (and memories of our tragic teen experiments with drugstore kits) usually stops us from trying a new shade.

So, with fiscal responsibility in mind, we enlisted People and Culture Manager Nicole (whose unofficial title is Peanut Butter Puffins Supplier) to test out KELLY VAN GOGH®’s Master Blend Color. A dusty-blonde who’s prone to an occasional grey strand, Nicole chose Van Gogh’s Medium Cool Blonde to give her locks a brighter golden hue. As a veteran of at-home coloring, she was impressed by the Kit’s salon-quality tools. She loved the “awesome” black rubber gloves that came inside each kit. And thanks to the dye’s gentle, caviar oil-infused formula, she reported that her strands actually felt softer post-rinse—pretty crazy, huh?

The rich gold blended perfectly with Nicole’s existing highlights while covering up any pesky greys. While we’re well aware that professional colorist Kelly Van Gogh’s products are top-of-the-line, we were relieved that Nicole loved her newly revamped locks—after all, we’d never dare to anger the woman in charge of deciding which cereals to stock in the Birchbox pantry.

Katy Perry Does Her Best Violet Beauregarde Impression

Photo: Styleite

Katy Perry always keeps us guessing when it comes to her hair—whether she’s channeling Smurfette with full on blue or keeping it “simple” with pink roots. This weekend at Coachella she debuted a brand new shade: dark violet. We’re digging the color, especially with the cute flower wreath in her hair. Although she’s doesn’t actually look like Violet Beauregarde, the snotty little girl from Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory, her penchant for candy colored hair and outfits do make us think she’d be a fan of the movie.

What do you think of the new color?

Did Michelle Trachtenberg Really Color Her Own Hair?

We know celebrities have access to the best stylists, makeup artists, and personal trainers in the business, which is why they always look so much more glamourous than the rest of us. It’s not surprising given that looking good is a huge part of most of their jobs. It is surprising when we hear about celebrities choosing the inexpensive option or doing their hair themselves. I know if I had a choice between doing my hair myself and having it look eh, and having a professional do it, I’d choose the professional every time.
