I’m always on the hunt for the best tools and products to get a salon-worthy blowout at home that will really last all day. Last week, I took home some products from indie hair brand amika that claimed to keep my blowout looking fresh long after the first day. After deciding to turn my bathroom into a DIY blowout bar, I documented the whole thing on Instagram. Read on to see how my locks held up despite a crazy busy work week:
I hate to use the f-word, but fall (yes, that f-word—what were you thinking?), is right around the corner. I’m searching for autumnal beauty inspiration and I found it in this photo of the lovely Lily Collins at the Canadian premiere of her new flick, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. In case you adore this look as much as I do, here’s how to recreate it:
1. Collins’ bold expressive brows are such a fan fave, they even have their own Twitter account! You’ll want to shade in your brows to get a similar look. We like this versatile pencil from IT Cosmetics, which works on variety of hair colors and the waterproof formula won’t smear or smudge.

You know the lyrics: “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” But George Gershwin never had to keep his hair frizz-free or his makeup from melting off his face (er, at least we don’t think he did).
Out to make this the best summer yet, we scoured our backlog of beauty know-how and came up with 77 hot tips to help you keep your cool all season long, from a polish trend that’s making a B.I.G. splash to a winter makeup look that’s equally chic as the thermometer inches up higher and higher. Follow @birchbox on Twitter and check out the hashtag #Hot77 from now till Labor Day for your guide to summertime beauty at its easiest.
Fake a fresh-from-the-beach glow with these handy and natural-looking (we swear!) tanning towelettes.
While the usual low-slung pony is great for day-to-day, holiday party season provides the ideal opportunity to experiment with a different style. That’s why we’ve teamed up with one of our favorite sites, Beauty High. Each week, they’ll be sending over a few runway shots to inspire you to try something new for your upcoming festive fetes.
We saw plenty of creative hair accessories on the fall/winter runways, and there’s no better time to experiment with some fun hair bling than at a holiday party. Below is some inspiration from a variety of shows—certainly enough to get you through this season!

The bright bobby pins used at Cacharel are the perfect, easy accessory to add some color and flair to any hairstyle. Whether you’re pulling your hair back into a ponytail or simply leaving it loose, using a few bright pins like these twisted bobby one from Wet Seal ($6.50) or these eye-catching ones from Jane Tran ($12) to clip your hair behind your ear will help give your style a refined edge.
Based in Washington D.C., Ayren Jackson-Cannady is so savvy that we wished she lived closer to NYC so that we could swap products with her. This beauty writer knows what’s up (she’s written for Fitness, Glamour, and Gloss Daily) and we’re excited to have her sharing her know-how and multi-culti beauty expertise as a contributing editor.
It’s been quite some time since I’ve participated in the whole back to school thing. Yet, this time of the year still brings back a rush of good-feelings, since it reminds me of being a school girl and prepping for my first day of class. While other girls fussed over outfits or debated what sneakers they’d rock, I was always thinking about picking the perfect mascara to make my lashes look longer and fuller than they did last year.
I’m still as much of a beauty dork now as I was then. I’ve been inspired (and a little jealous) of all the students hitting the books, so I compiled a few of the coolest fall beauty trends that we all should try:
When it’s hot and humid outside, there’s no other option: You must pull your hair back. While low ponies and messy buns are easy-breezy, they’re also a bit bleh—not the fashion statement you want to make, trust us. That’s why we’re big proponents of hair accessories. They easily spruce up your look and often require little to no effort. Case in point: Our latest office-wide obsession is the oversize metal barrette. A cinch to use, these jumbo clips are fun and slightly kitchy—in the best way possible. Gold is super sleek, but we’re particularly fond of the green since it’s a nice bright contrast to almost everything in our closets.
There are so many awesome looks you can create with these barrettes, so we thought it would be fun to showcase three of our favorite styles on different staffers.
Graphic designer Ally has shoulder-length, slightly wavy hair. She decided to do a sweet side twist, which would even work with shorter, chin-length hair.
This weekend marks the official start of summer, which means that Birchboxers have plans to kick back, rest up, and hopefully bask in some serious sunshine. We asked several of our staffers where they’re headed (stay-cations sound as enticing as traveling) and the must-have product they’re bringing along. Here’s what editor and content strategy manager Meredith had to say.
I’m off to Bermuda and hoping to soak up a little vitamin D—if the weather cooperates. Regardless of whether it’s sunny and delightful or rainy and muggy, you always need a chic and easy hair accessory when you’re island-ing. That’s why I’m bringing my new jumbo barrette. It makes me look like a stylish traveler even though it doesn’t take any time or effort to snap it into place.
Here are some other fun hair accessory ideas!
