Have you ever wondered what you would eat for your last meal? Melanie Dunea has. When she’s not interviewing people for her blog My Last Supper, she spends her time as a freelance portrait photographer and casual instagramer. At first meeting, you probably won’t register my face, but you will absolutely take note of my hair. It’s a riotous bushel of brown coils: shoulder-length, impressive in diameter, and very, very curly—always a bit of an anomaly in this blow-dried world. And, while I have an admittedly strong personality, my hair is an outright rebel. It’s got an identity and swagger all its own—which means that for years, I never knew whether I was going to wake up to a frizz bomb or a dull, flat nest.
We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.
I can’t believe it, but the day has finally come. My wedding is tomorrow (!) and I couldn’t be more excited. To ensure that my tresses are at their best before I walk down that aisle, I paid a visit to my go-to stylist, Janine Jarman of Shear Genius fame, to get a quick trim at her charming Hollywood salon Hairroin. (Fun fact: this spot is also a great place to score brilliant braids.)

1. Don’t hide behind your hair.“Have your hair in such a way that a side of your face is exposed, because you don’t want to cover your face in pictures. If you have long hair, clear a shoulder before photos or tuck a few strands behind the ear.”

One of my favorite series on Hair Romance, and also the most popular, is Big Hair Friday. Every Friday I share some fabulous big hair to inspire and here are three quick tips to create big volume in your hair.
1. Wash your hair properly: Check out my five tips for how to wash your hair and use a volumizing shampoo. Apply conditioner only to the ends of your hair and make sure you rinse well. Any excess product in your hair will weigh it down.
I’ve been growing out my hair over the last year, and now that it’s waist-length, hair maintenance has become a real problem. My ends are really dry and my once-perfect, now-bushy side bangs tend to hide my face. I fear that my resemblance to Chewbacca is growing by the day (just kidding).
