Summer is approaching, which means that many of us will be visiting the salon for a lighter hair shade, highlights, or both. The Bridal Bun: Lover.ly

We’ve been planning our dream weddings since we were five years old. So it’s no surprise that we can’t get enough of Lover.ly, a wedding inspiration site that lets you search through pics of swoon-worthy gowns, bouquets, and everything else you need for the big day. Once a week, the ladies behind Lover.ly will be sharing their best tips for getting through the craziness of the season—whether you’re standing at the altar or enjoying a view of it from the audience.

When it comes to wedding hairstyles, our current favorite is the bun. It’s such a classic look, but still feels fresh when paired with today’s bridal styles. Anyone can master this no-fuss look and it works for brides, bridesmaids, and guests. Here are our favorite versions from Lover.ly:

1. From the feathered bolero to the smoky eyes, this Black Swan-esque look brings the drama and is so glamorous. (Bridal Musings via Lover.ly)

2. This blonde bride is rocking the sock bun and it looks absolutely elegant. (Jessica May Photography on Equally Wed via Lover.ly)

3. We love an easy DIY bun like this for a chic courthouse ceremony or elopement. (Allyson Magda on Inspired By This via Lover.ly)

4. This look is sweet for summer weddings and (bonus!) keeps your hair off your neck and face for those warmer days. (Ash & James Photography on Ash & James Photography via Lover.ly)

5. We love the idea of a high bun for your entire bridal party! It helps create a more coordinated look that doesn’t draw attention away from the bride. (Jonathan Wherrett on Polka Dot Bride via Lover.ly)

Ready to start practicing your bun for all your upcoming events? Make sure it stays in place with TIGI Catwalk Your Highness Firm Hold Hairspray.

My Curly Hair Saviors: Guest Blogger

Have you ever wondered what you would eat for your last meal? Melanie Dunea has. When she’s not interviewing people for her blog My Last Supper, she spends her time as a freelance portrait photographer and casual instagramer. And this week, Melanie is sharing her favorite beauty, food, and photography tips on the Birchbox blog.

At first meeting, you probably won’t register my face, but you will absolutely take note of my hair. It’s a riotous bushel of brown coils: shoulder-length, impressive in diameter, and very, very curly—always a bit of an anomaly in this blow-dried world. And, while I have an admittedly strong personality, my hair is an outright rebel. It’s got an identity and swagger all its own—which means that for years, I never knew whether I was going to wake up to a frizz bomb or a dull, flat nest.

Celebrity Hairstylist Janine Jarman’s Guide to Picture-Perfect Bridal Hair

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

I can’t believe it, but the day has finally come. My wedding is tomorrow (!) and I couldn’t be more excited. To ensure that my tresses are at their best before I walk down that aisle, I paid a visit to my go-to stylist, Janine Jarman of Shear Genius fame, to get a quick trim at her charming Hollywood salon Hairroin. (Fun fact: this spot is also a great place to score brilliant braids.)

Given that Jarman’s highly-publicized wedding looked like a dream, I couldn’t resist asking her for some helpful tips on hair for the big day. Read on for eight great takeaways, straight from the source.

1. Don’t hide behind your hair.“Have your hair in such a way that a side of your face is exposed, because you don’t want to cover your face in pictures. If you have long hair, clear a shoulder before photos or tuck a few strands behind the ear.”

A Curl Gel Without the Crunch

image

A quick census of Birchbox HQ reveals a surprisingly high percentage of curly-haired staffers. The abundance of ringlets often sparks office-wide conversations about how best to manage curly hair. Though my own hair is straight, I’ve been privy to insider styling tactics for quite some time now. The number one item on everyone’s agenda? Finding a styling gel that doesn’t leave hair stiff and crunchy—you know, the look that many curly-haired girls wore before they knew any better. After testing just about every gel on the market, many of my co-workers agreed that Miss Jessie’s brand new Jelly Soft Curls gets the award. Some of you will be receiving it in your boxes this month, and it’s available exclusively in the Birchbox shop until July! There are a ton of reasons we love this clear gel, but here’s the Sparknotes version:

Who doesn’t love big hair?

One of my favorite series on Hair Romance, and also the most popular, is Big Hair Friday. Every Friday I share some fabulous big hair to inspire and here are three quick tips to create big volume in your hair.

1. Wash your hair properly: Check out my five tips for how to wash your hair and use a volumizing shampoo. Apply conditioner only to the ends of your hair and make sure you rinse well.  Any excess product in your hair will weigh it down.

One of the Best Deep Conditioners We’ve Ever Tried

image

I’ve been growing out my hair over the last year, and now that it’s waist-length, hair maintenance has become a real problem. My ends are really dry and my once-perfect, now-bushy side bangs tend to hide my face. I fear that my resemblance to Chewbacca is growing by the day (just kidding). Fed up with my unkempt strands, I asked my Birchbox co-workers for a remedy, and hair whiz editor Meredith immediately jumped in with a recommendation: the Ojon rare blend Deep Conditioner. According to Meredith, it’s one of the best deep conditioners she’s ever used (and that’s some high praise coming from her). After listening to her accolades, I snagged a sample and now I’m adding it to my must-have list!
