How to Rock Ruffles at a Wedding: Guest Blogger

It seems like we have an endless list of weddings to attend these days, which means we’re constantly in need of some serious style advice. Thankfully, Ilana Stern, Founder and CEO of Weddington Way, an online boutique filled with gorgeous wedding party style picks, is sharing her wisdom with us all week long.

Large, dramatic ruffles were all over the runways for designers like Chloe, Givenchy, Marni and Balenciaga. We absolutely adore this girly trend, and lucky for us, it translates easily from the runway to the aisle. This ruffled bridesmaid dress by Watters is a fun blend of modern and feminine in one fabulous satin dress. Pair it with silver drop earrings by Dogeared and a sparkly chevron bangle for a touch of glam.

Tricks to Taming Wild Brows: Guest Blogger

You could say Melanie Allen knows a thing or two about good hair. As the Marketing Manager and Content Editor of My Best Friend’s Hair—which helps readers find awesome stylists, salons and products—Melanie is particularly knowledgeable about all things ‘do. That’s why this week she’s giving us the scoop on salon etiquette, growing out your bangs, and more.

My eyebrows have always been my biggest beauty struggle. My brows are thick, unruly, and downright hard to manage, and I’ve tried it all when it comes to keeping them in check. Here are my favorite tips, tricks, and products to tame even the wildest of brows (and if it works for me, it will work for anyone!).

Borderline Black Lipstick for Black Friday: Guest Blogger

Nothing gets us giddy like a good wedding. Katelyn Koepke Lewis, one of our lovely freelance writers, got hitched this October and we couldn’t resist asking her to share her bridal wisdom. The former PR maven and J-school grad recently went back to her editorial roots, working as a feature writer and editor for Be U Weddings, a Chicago-based blogazine. This week, Katelyn’s sharing her newlywed advice, from bridal beauty tricks that you can use post-wedding to how to pick hostess gifts for your new in-laws.

Considering it’s Black Friday and you’re all undoubtedly scouring stores for killer deals (report back!), I thought I’d take the day’s name to heart as color inspiration—for lips! Yep, I’m going there: the vampy, brooding, almost-black lips we saw all over the fall runways. From deep wines to cherry blacks, here are my of-the-moment picks for keeping the pout chic, but not too gothic. (C’mon, you know you have to at least try this dusky, seductive lipstick craze!)

Chatting With Nasty Gal’s Beauty Guru And Stylist

We fell hard for Natalie Alcala last fall, when the LA-based writer and blogger spent a week guest blogging for us. In fact, we loved her posts so much that we asked her to be a contributing editor. In addition to blogging for us once a week, she’ll also be writing for the Birchbox Magazine and keeping us up to speed on all things fashion, beauty, and fun.

Stacey Nishimoto is one of L.A.’s most treasured trendsetters. In addition to reviving the backcoming hair trend, she also does a killer cat-eye and isn’t afraid to rock a bold lip. As a stylist and makeup artist for Nasty Gal, Nishimoto is responsible for glamming gorgeous gals for the cool-kid e-tailer’s lookbooks and online shop. Did I mention that she’s also a new mom?

I sat down with Nishimoto to hear more about her makeup memories, go-to products, and the one celeb she’d love to make over.

Is 5-Free the New Standard For Nail Polish?

What’s missing in the latest nail polish formulas? Nothing that you’re going to miss. (Photo:

When nail polish was first created in France in the 1920’s, the formula was an adapted version of the glossy enamel used on cars. Eep! Thankfully, the formulas have come a long way since then. Over the past few years, we’ve seen many “3-free” formulas that omit harmful dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, and formaldehyde. The next step: 5-free polishes, which are made without formaldehyde resin and camphor. Click through for more on these two toxic ingredients and for a list of our favorite 5-free brands!

Oscar Superlatives: 2012 Edition

Last night’s Academy Awards were a little snore-inducing, but it’s always fun to watch, and judge, the red carpet. Herewith, this year’s completely arbitrary, totally subjective picks and pans.

Knock It Off
— We’re a little tired of the same, played-out looks from Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lopez. We’ve seen Angie’s all-black, high slit too many times to count, and her leg posing last night had us rolling our eyes. J.Lo’s plunging neckline and its maybe-maybe-not wardrobe malfunction moment, which recalled her famous Versace gown from the Grammy’s in 2000, made us want to throw a sheet over the whole look.

Fullest Fringe — Rooney Mara’s got the ’20s style flapper bangs down to an art now (she’s been sporting the look since last fall), and when paired with her beautiful Givenchy gown, it was a win by far.

Evening Superhero — We swooned as soon as Gwyneth Paltrow stepped onto the red carpet. Wearing a gorgeous, caped Tom Ford look paired with a low, deconstructed ponytail, we couldn’t take our eyes off the actress’ stunning style all night long.

Role Model — There’s no doubt that Meryl Streep is one of the most talented ladies out there (17 Oscar nominations!), but she’s also one of the classiest, most gracious winners, too. When she accepted her Best Actress award last night, we were taking notes on how to seem lovely, poised, and witty all at the same time.

Prettiest Peplums — Michelle Williams and Tina Fey were stand-outs on the carpet showing off this ladylike trend. We give them both an A+ for style.

Best Feel Good Moment — As fans of the original 1965 version of The Sound of Music, we were so happy to see Christopher Plummer (a.k.a. Captain von Trapp) nominated for his role in this year’s Beginners. But we were even more ecstatic when the 82-year-old won the award, making his mark as the oldest actor ever to win an Oscar.

Would You Ever? Givenchy Eye Sequins

I first saw these pictures of Gisele from the Givenchy Spring ‘12 show a few weeks ago, and have been thinking about them ever since. First because it’s Gisele— I’d wear lipstick all over my face if I thought it would make me look like her. Second, they’re sequins and like most of the women in our office, I’m a total magpie. But this is obviously best left to the supermodels, right?

Then again, I’m increasingly tempted to try them out on a Saturday night. With a pinch of eyelash glue and minimal makeup on the rest of the face, they could be downright wearable. Am I crazy or would you wear these too?

Reading List: Kate + Couture

Photos from Chanel: Luca Cannonieri/ via

You might have heard that our office is moving! Woop, woop! But, before we get to the new digs, we have some unfinished business. Namely, our reading list. Here’s what was going on while we packed up our beauty closet this week.

  • BellaSugar has all the deets on a pair of LED glasses that read your mind (really!) and display the emotion you’re feeling at that moment. Our faces usually do the talking for us anyway, but these might be a bit too revealing!
  • Givenchy + Liv Tyler = breathtaking. That’s the takeaway from Givenchy’s Fall/Winter beauty campaign. See the ad on Beauty High.
  • Of course we’ve been keeping an eye on Kate, Duchess of Windsor’s outfits all week as she traipsed (only joking, princesses don’t traipse) across North America with Wills. Now we have a royal fragrance to look forward to as well. alerted us to fragrance company, House of Creed’s new frangrance, Royal Oud. It will be released in October but the couple get to try it out before anyone else, tomorrow at the Santa Barbara Polo Club.
  • Also this week? Couture shows! Allure breaks down the perfect smoky eye at the Chanel show.
  • In case you’re getting married this summer, attending a few, or just like having pretty hair, you may want to take a look at Refinery29’s ideas for updated styles.
