We thought that the nails at New York Fashion Week were cool but Paris always takes things to the next level, and manicures are no exception. At the Thierry Mugler show earlier this week, models sported some of the most insane nail art we’ve ever seen. This season’s inspiration came from the brand’s 1990s “Insect” collection, which explains why these talons look so bug-y.

Whether it’s the founder of a beloved beauty brand, an eccentric makeup artist making headlines, or even a super-stylish celebrity, our favorite tastemakers always have something worth sharing. At the Whitney Port’s Whitney Eve show during NYFW, models sported big ponytails and baubles in their hair. We spoke with stylist Martin-Christopher Harper about his inspiration for the look. Turns out, his childhood had quite a bit to do with it.
For me it was a very ’90s girl. I’m from California, I lived at the mall, I lived for the mall. The idea is that her perm’s growing out, she’s at the mall, she hit Claire’s Boutique and got that bauble in her hair.

New York Fashion Week might have come to an end, but we’re still gushing over our favorite manicures from the fall 2012 shows. We wanted to round up the highlights, so we came up with the five standouts that have inspired us to test out new designs.
Show: threeASFOUR
The Look: Gorgeous lacey, spider web nails by Color Club that were created to match the laser-cut pieces. Lead manicurist Alicia Torello used a specially made dove gray nail art pen to draw tiny stripes back and forth free-hand over the nail, mimicking the unique, romantic feel of lace.

Makeup: Bobbi Brown
The Vibe: The perennial downtown girl. Lead stylist for Cutler/Redken, Martin-Christopher Harper, said the look was “all about a cool young downtown girl. We kept going back to this girl on 34th street that can’t decide if she wants to go uptown or stay downtown.” To achieve that unstudied coolness, Harper used Redken Full Frame 07 Protective Volumizing Mousse, working it into models’ hair with his hands to “encourage the texture and then break it down with the Cutler shine spray.”

Hair: Anthony Cole for Sebastian Professional
Makeup: Sarah Lucero for stila Cosmetics
The Vibe: A Gothic fairytale. Sarah Lucero, pro makeup artist for stila, created a dark, punky look to complement designer Stacy Bendet’s collection. Of the inspiration Lucero said, “she’s at a dinner party but a haunted house dinner party. So it’s very whimsical, and fun and a little theatrical. The eyes and lips are very dense, very bold, very dramatic, so we’re just creating a very sexy shape with a black stila Smudge Crayon.” The Smudge Crayons are new for spring and combine a primer, shadow, and liner in one. They’re available in eight shades, from Midnight Blue to their super-popular Kitten. The lips were covered in Long Wear Lip Color in Daring.

The Vibe: Abstract and edgy, but still feminine. To mirror the theme of detailed graphic designs and textures in the Haus Alkire collection, TIGI’s global creative director and lead stylist Nick Irwin created an inventive, complex style. “We wanted movement on the top, so we created this crisscross weave,” said Irwin of the detailed ‘do. Important products to get this look were Session Series Wet Look Gel and Session Series True Wax, which were literally painted on to hair using a color brush to create a vinyl-like appearance.

Nails: Yuna Park using Oscar de la Renta polish
The Vibe: A daughter going to town in her mom’s Park Avenue closet. “It’s a little bit of a young girl playing dress up,” said Revlon’s global artistic director, Gucci Westman, of the look. “She’s just kind of having fun.” Certainly, the makeup conveyed whimsy, with doll-like rosy cheeks thanks to Revlon’s PhotoReady Cream Blush in Flushed (due out in May), and spidery lashes. “The mascara isn’t super perfect,” said Westman of the effect. “It’s a little clumpy and more of a cool girl look, but I like it. It’s nice to see mascara for once that’s not just pretty.”

The Vibe: A modern take on 1960s vintage. “The muse was Judy Garland at the end of her career, kind of trashy,” said TIGI lead stylist Nick Irwin. “There’s this famous TV interview with her in the late ’60s when she was quite drunk, so it was about that kind of quirkiness.” To get the crazy piled-high hair, Irwin and his team used wigs, which Irwin described as a “ballsy” choice on the part of designer Chris Benz. Apparently, working with fake hair can be more of a challenge than working with the real deal. “The wigs are inexpensive and come with this strong wave in their hair,” explained Irwin. “We’re completely deconstructing the texture, really sort of changing the fabric of the wig by basically using a full can of dry shampoo on each.” (Indeed, there was quite the graveyard of empty TIGI Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo cans.) Once faux strands had been sufficiently sprayed, stylists used load of pins to achieve a truly kooky and unique shape for each model. “It’s maybe the silhouette of a beehive, but the detail and the texture keeps it really modern and fresh and quite young,” said Irwin.

Breaking news: Oscar de la Renta will be releasing his first collection of polishes this October. The number of colors has yet to be finalized, but it will likely be six shades. We happily got a sneak peek at three of them at today’s fall 2012 show. Red Carnation is a classic crimson, Aubergine is a deep eggplant, and Larimar is a lovely light blue.
